I own a 5S and it's pretty damn nice. But there's one thing I've noticed about it that you haven't really touched on in your videos (I've watched most of your comparison & tutorial videos about it before deciding to purchase 😅). My S23 was crooked in the 5s... I.e. It sagged a bit to the left. The autocalibration didn't do anything to fix it. There's surprisingly little information about this issue online. Just to be clear... it kept the gimbal arm, at the roll motor joint, perfectly level... but due to the weight of the phone, the camera side of it was about 2 degrees off horizontal. As opposed to DJI gimbals which have a roll trim option in the app, Zhiyun doesn't offer this quick fix. After trying in vain to calibrate it according to the manual, I discovered that in the windows "Calibration Upgrade Tool", which can connect your PC to the gimbal over USB, and help you do a six side calibration, there's the option of applying roll trim. -2° fixed my issue. It's disappointing that Zhiyun didn't add the option to apply roll trimming in the ZY Cami app, especially now that you can actually apply a firmware upgrade to the gimbal over Bluetooth, so obviously the required communication capability between the phone and the gimbal is there.
i experience the same problem sir. my brandnew smooth 5s delivered today. the camera side of 2 degrees going left horizontally. it looks like because of heavy wait of my iphone 14 pro max. i think i need to do what you been done so my problem also will be fixed. thanks you so much sir.
While this is an absolutely gorgeous gimbal, a tweak for future version would be a design that allows port side access of the phone for plugging in accessories like receivers for wireless mics

This is a great tutorial. But I stopped in the middle, you explain really on point, it is just that I saw, both apps are requiring a monthly/yearly subsricption and the necessary switch between the apps for different functions is just way off what I was looking for. If it was one single fully functioning app I would consider the gimbal and buying the subs, but I want easiness in my takes and workflow so I guess I have to look for alternatives although I really like this gimbal. Looks like as it is not made for the iPhone somehow. ... anyway, thank you for your videos.

I have just bought the Smooth 5 and will be using with an iPhone 12, but wondered what lens/converter combo you might suggest for close up food work? Also a lot of slow mo. I learned so much from this video, thanks to people like you that are a few steps towards and let us know all of this info, you are doing a better job that the guys that are in charge for the instructions manuals, and even more with this hardware and applications that are not very well designed for user interface. Do you have a video showing who to use the gimbal with FilMic Pro?, and, do you know any other 3rd party app, that works with the gimbal (which I find it difficult since both phones and gimbal manufactures have to provide permission over their firmwares), or at least another 3rd party app that make a good job by controlling iso, frames, etc... good think about this gimbal is that can be used without any dedicated app, just for stabilization.

The iPhone 14 Pro has pretty amazing stabilization built in, making the gimbal a bit less critical. Have you addressed this in another video or somewhere else?
I use the 14 pro max with the zhiyun smooth 5s. Best combination to make an almost perfect video. I’d recommend to anyone who uses it professionally like I do 😊

if you want a portable gimbal, OM 6 or OM 4 SE. If you want something more powerful, Smooth 5. There's a new Hohem gimbal coming which I'm testing now, so you might want to hang on for that

Due to you’re advice on this video, I think I will go for the smooth 5 since I wanted to expand lenses etc. There’s a nice sale for the smooth 5 right now in their sight for the combo which is nice. There’s also a great sale at moment right now for many things. There’s even a 3 lense choice kit at moment for significant savings but I wanted to know your opinion as to which 3 to choose to start out like I am. Obviously one of the anamorphic will be there, I’m just not sure which to choose, the gold or the blue or if I should have both? That being said, I doubt if my choice was only three of the lenses to get two anamorphic unless you think I should? My question really is which three would be the best range to start out like me ? I’m not so interested in the macro but thought maybe an anamorphic, and then a wide, either the 18 or 14 fisheye, and then I’m stuck. The Tele 58? What’s your thoughts? I promise I won’t ask anymore! 😂
Hello, excellent video, I have a question, I also have the smooth 5 and the iphone 12 pro max, but I have the problem that when I record at 4k 60fps and I am outdoors, the phone gets too hot and reduces the brightness of the screen too much and it is very difficult to see the screen. Does the same happen to you? Or is it a problem with my phone? Thank you very much and continue with your wonderful videos.
I never had that issue with the 12 Pro Max. But if you're filming in a hot country, that will make a difference. As well, having the phone connected to the gimbal via bluetooth all the time will increase heating

I just purchased the 5S. Can you tell me why the gimbal axis continues to move when in the Locked Mode? Not sure why it continues to move all over the place when it should be focused in the same direction. Please help
I bought the Smooth 5S but I do not know how to take still pictures on this machine unlike the Zhiyun 4 which was easy to operate. We need the tuturial for the still pictures as well on this S5
What do you think about paning with this? Feel like i am in way more control just holding the phone in hand. Sure, up and down was pretty good but i feel it moves way after i turn left or right. And it is way harder to keep a centered shot. Is it like this with all gimbals? Is that a common limitation? Never used One until the smooth 5s (just got it) and i feel like it is way to unpredictible for me to be confident to use it. I like to do cinematic stuff just FYI. Thanks for awesome content🙏🙏
I only use a gimbal for certain shots. Whenever I need some smooth gliding movement. You can adjust how loose the gimbal is in app settings. But that extra movement allows you to ease out of a shot rather than suddenly stop. Stop your pan movement early and allow the gimbal to slowly come to a stop
Can you maybe speak more about following something walking on the ground... with the Smooth 5S Gimbal being held by the human straight down, maybe with the cell-phone a foot off the ground? We like to take videos of our Cats when we go for walks. Do you see any issues with the Smooth 5S in performing this kind of maneuver? Thanks.

Question, I'm in the PF mode and my gimbal visually seemed a bit off balance...so I kept the phone in the gimbal and turned on my leveling app and sure enough, the gimbal is off by 1 degee...should I be looking for a perfect leveling experience or is 1 degree unleveled ok? they are very different gimbals - unless you want to use extras like filter and lenses the OM 6 is a good choice, but the Smooth 5 has more flexible motors

I follow you now👍 I have also a Iphone 14 Pro Max and want to use a gymbal for filming 24p in the moment app or also for the gymbal remote in the stacam app, with prime membership (remote stuff). btw i can't switch to 1/48 in stacam only 1/50.... is that normal cause it would be a nogo to use the gymbal 5/5s? Can the 5s handle more weight than the 5, cause you have tested both in practice. Can they realy handle the setup that you use that i would also order from moment cause the weight. (before i saw your channel,funny) It's the moment case, moment anamorphic and adapters with mounted vnd. If i wan't use a mic it is possible to turn around the phone. What speak against this ? I sea one problem, Moment App can handle the turn up side down with no remote of smooth 5 (180) but the stacam app can't do it, maybe they should put the feature in. Or is there a trick? Hello whats the diferences between the smooth 5 vs 5S ? as in hardware built ? Im not keen on lights and add on things. If i want that in the future i can buy the lights but the phone i have samsung s23 ultra already comes with its own light. So if not mistaken the only differences is that 5S is because it comes with a external light ? Or is it because one model is black and the 5S is a white model gimbal ? thanks.
Do I have to use ZY Cami app to shoot the videos or can I use the regular camera app on iPhone to shoot the video? Also if shooting with anamorphic lense for smartphone/iphone, is there any special setting that I have to configure? Appreciate any response
Smooth 5/5s can work with ZY Cami, StaCam, and Filmic Pro. If the volum button of phone can control native camera of the phone to record, 5/5S can do also. Installing other lens, must find a way to manually balance the gimbal well, so that the gimbal can work normally.
I'm interested in this gimbal but a little concerned that it might not be possible to connect an external microphone because of the way the phone is mounted. Do you have any experience with this?
So it looks like all the gimals have this issue of not centering back to the original position. My Osmo 2 and 3 does not come back to the same spot after a 360 degree turn. This kind of drives me to nuts. This issue is particularly bothersome when I try to shoot a long walk. After couple of left and right turns, it no longer is pointing straight.
Can it also handle the 12 pro max with the moment wide, filter adapter and vari nd without big hastle (or with counterweights for full lens setup for better balance)? In horizontal and also in vertical mode? (I cant find the weight limit for this gimbal) If yes this could be the first good smartphone gimbal 🤔
@@SiHorrocks yeah ive waited for your review on the gimbal bc many of the others couldnt answer this question I even had just the old 62mm filter adapter which should save some grams with the filters compared to the 67mm I mainly use the 18mm and 58mm with vnd and sometimes also the k&f black diffusion A gimbal with filmic support (or hopefully beastcam support when filmic goes subscription) for vertical quality phone videos would be awesome Do you think it could also handle all this with an counterweight for an much better base horizontal balance?

OM6 does not allow full tilt in horizontal mounted phone because of arm position limitations. Therefore it is not a true 3 axis gimbal. There are youtube videos about this. Beware.
Hi Simon thanks for this guide that it's very useful; I have a problem when I try to balance with this 5s the s22 ultra, it's impossible to put the phone as explained in the zhiyun guide becose of 2 factors...1 the right position implies that the buttons are pressed by the gimbal ...2 the smartphone hits the gimbal axis...any suggestion? Just got the Smooth 5 with ZY Cami App but unfortunately the wheel in front for functions is not properly working. It’s not responding to rotation and left and right clicks. Sent to service, haven’t even used it yet.
Acctually he wheel in front have different function in ZY Cami and StaCam. Most of the time you can not control it when use in ZY Cami. It's not the quality of the gimbal, only the design of the button.

Agreed. I recently added a mic setup that plugs directly into my note 20 ultra. Works great with this gimbal (mic is 7RYMS RIMOMIC PRO)
you should be able to stick the DJI Mic at the bottom and still keeping it balanced.
That sounds like the Hohem isteady M6 .Has all of this and lights.

I don't think you need the subscription version of the apps. Free version is fine

The Smooth 5s operates the same as this model, the only different is the built-in flash on the gimbal.
8:09 in such movements my phone just rotates to vertical... why? :( (model: smooth 5s with 13 pro max iphone).

Hello, excellent video, I have a question, I also have the smooth 5 and the iphone 12 pro max, but I have the problem that when I record at 4k 60fps and I am outdoors, the phone gets too hot and reduces the brightness of the screen too much and it is very difficult to see the screen. Does the same happen to you? Or is it a problem with my phone?

I never had that issue with the 12 Pro Max. But if you're filming in a hot country, that will make a difference. As well, having the phone connected to the gimbal via bluetooth all the time will increase heating

I bought the Smooth 5S but I do not know how to take still pictures on this machine unlike the Zhiyun 4 which was easy to operate. We need the tuturial for the still pictures as well on this S5
you can't take pictures with the StaCam app, you need to use the ZY Cami

Does the active track work with Filmic Pro?
What do you think about paning with this? Feel like i am in way more control just holding the phone in hand. Sure, up and down was pretty good but i feel it moves way after i turn left or right. And it is way harder to keep a centered shot. Is it like this with all gimbals? Is that a common limitation? Never used One until the smooth 5s (just got it) and i feel like it is way to unpredictible for me to be confident to use it. I like to do cinematic stuff just FYI.

I only use a gimbal for certain shots. Whenever I need some smooth gliding movement. You can adjust how loose the gimbal is in app settings. But that extra movement allows you to ease out of a shot rather than suddenly stop. Stop your pan movement early and allow the gimbal to slowly come to a stop

Can you maybe speak more about following something walking on the ground... with the Smooth 5S Gimbal being held by the human straight down, maybe with the cell-phone a foot off the ground? We like to take videos of our Cats when we go for walks. Do you see any issues with the Smooth 5S in performing this kind of maneuver? Thanks.
Smooth 5S perform well when shooting foot off the ground because it has no restriction in angles.
Love the video! Question, I'm in the PF mode and my gimbal visually seemed a bit off balance...so I kept the phone in the gimbal and turned on my leveling app and sure enough, the gimbal is off by 1 degee...should I be looking for a perfect leveling experience or is 1 degree unleveled ok? the gimbal may need to do six-side calibration I think.

they are very different gimbals - unless you want to use extras like filter and lenses the OM 6 is a good choice, but the Smooth 5 has more flexible motors

you can set the joystick reverse in the ZY Cami app.

I follow you now👍 I have also a Iphone 14 Pro Max and want to use a gymbal for filming 24p in the moment app or also for the gymbal remote in the stacam app, with prime membership (remote stuff). btw i can't switch to 1/48 in stacam only 1/50.... is that normal cause it would be a nogo to use the gymbal 5/5s? Can the 5s handle more weight than the 5, cause you have tested both in practice. Can they realy handle the setup that you use that i would also order from moment cause the weight. (before i saw your channel,funny) It's the moment case, moment anamorphic and adapters with mounted vnd.
If i wan't use a mic it is possible to turn around the phone. What speak against this ? I sea one problem, Moment App can handle the turn up side down with no remote of smooth 5 (180) but the stacam app can't do it, maybe they should put the feature in. Or is there a trick?

Hello whats the diferences between the smooth 5 vs 5S ? as in hardware built ? Im not keen on lights and add on things. If i want that in the future i can buy the lights but the phone i have samsung s23 ultra already comes with its own light. So if not mistaken the only differences is that 5S is because it comes with a external light ? Or is it because one model is black and the 5S is a white model gimbal ? thanks.

Smooth 5/5s can work with ZY Cami, StaCam, and Filmic Pro. If the volum button of phone can control native camera of the phone to record, 5/5S can do also. Installing other lens, must find a way to manually balance the gimbal well, so that the gimbal can work normally.
I'm interested in this gimbal but a little concerned that it might not be possible to connect an external microphone because of the way the phone is mounted. Do you have any experience with this?

So it looks like all the gimals have this issue of not centering back to the original position. My Osmo 2 and 3 does not come back to the same spot after a 360 degree turn. This kind of drives me to nuts. This issue is particularly bothersome when I try to shoot a long walk. After couple of left and right turns, it no longer is pointing straight.
Can it also handle the 12 pro max with the moment wide, filter adapter and vari nd without big hastle (or with counterweights for full lens setup for better balance)?

I don't have a Moment wide but it handles the 12PM, 58mm + K&F VND. The 58mm is one of the heaviest Moment lenses

I even had just the old 62mm filter adapter which should save some grams with the filters compared to the 67mm
I mainly use the 18mm and 58mm with vnd and sometimes also the k&f black diffusion
A gimbal with filmic support (or hopefully beastcam support when filmic goes subscription) for vertical quality phone videos would be awesome

OM6 does not allow full tilt in horizontal mounted phone because of arm position limitations. Therefore it is not a true 3 axis gimbal. There are youtube videos about this. Beware.

My S22 ultra can be well balanced with the 5S without hitting the gimbal axis, maybe you can contact Zhiyun after-sales team for help. 😁

I would be using this with a Samsung S23 Ultra. How are people using an external mic to get good audio directly on the phone, so that video editing can be done immediately on the phone using Lumafusion?
Samsung S23 Ultra is not in the compatibility list at present. It may add in it in the future in the future I think.
Just got the Smooth 5 with ZY Cami App but unfortunately the wheel in front for functions is not properly working. It’s not responding to rotation and left and right clicks. Sent to service, haven’t even used it yet.
Acctually he wheel in front have different function in ZY Cami and StaCam. Most of the time you can not control it when use in ZY Cami. It's not the quality of the gimbal, only the design of the button.
How well will it work with Xperia Pro-I ?
this phone is not in the compatibility list. But most of them will work well with the gimbal except the Samsung which not in the list.
