Interesting as always Simon particularly because we just don't get to see much Marconi gear on this side of the pond, especially the older stuff. Glad you were able to repair the meter. Precision meter movements are always a tricky thing. One wrong move and they're very easily ruined. Well done. ATB Doug.
Hey Simon, did you have a electronic manual for this as I just purchased a 893C (I'm yet to receive it) and seem to be struggling to find manual online.
I have one also.it has just on multiturn pot inside ,my meter is off some,do you think that would be the adjustment, also my unit doesnt have sinad but behint the cover the switch is there, and a black jumper wire by it,the specs say you cab get a option,,yes long time ago,,just wondering what it looks like, 1000 HZ filter
I bought a TF 893A here in Australia for the right price. The 893A audio power meter prices on ebay in the UK are just too expensive especially with the cost of shipping added on. I remember using one for checking the power levels of aircraft intercom systems in the RAAF during my 20 years plus of service as an electronics tech. I didn't ever run into the 893C beast , any idea of the date of manufacture of the 'C' instrument. The A model is a 1959 manufacturing date as I recall. I didn't see one till late 1973 after I had been a RAAF member for over a year. UK Marconi made some useful equipment, I especially like their RF signal generators but still very expensive on ebay here in Australia and more so elsewhere. Regards Robert
Simon Spiers 7 hours ago Thanks Robert, yes Marconi gear is popular over here as you can imagine. I use the 2019 Marconi for everyday use. Good generator. (Simon accidentally posted this reply to my comment.)
Yes first saw one of those while serving in the RAAF as well , way back in the mid 1980's. I have a couple of Marconi 2022 and a 2022C with faults. They are on the back burner, will get to them eventually. They both have level calibration problems, one fault is intermittent.
Buying used test equipment is a mine field. Sent 2 modulation . Deviation meters back. Dead on arrival.. This unit if working would be ideal.. Waiting on a Sinadder meter arriving. Hoping that has no issues... Eventually got a Racal Dana that does the job..
@@SoddingaboutSi Yeah, I understand it when the selected scale is set to zero dBm and you have to do the mental math to then subtract...same kinda thing happens on my Boonton RF Millivoltmeter, it just isn't intuitive until you sit there and stare at it like you had to do. Agree that it's not that useful as a SINAD meter...the dedicated instruments like the my old SINNADER makes sensitivity testing much easier since it both generates and filters the 1kHz tone. Thanks for sharing Simon!
I always wanted one of these but never dropped on one at the right price. Looks in great cosmetic condition. I know it’s not what your interested in but some of your viewer may be interested to know there are free Sinad meter that will work from a computer sound card and provide a reasonable audio spectrum analyser Very interesting thanks for sharing regards Chris.
And i thought it was an old multimeter at first glance. I like the nice neat insides of that device, but it's not likely to make it work better, my excuse for gobbing parts on to a bit of stripboard and throwing it in a box, never to see the light of day again :-D Sinad is something i' ve never needed, and Dog Biscuits d.b never really made any sense, but i'm a bit thick and rather stubborn at times... ok all of the time , Logrithmic madness :-D To test a meter, i would supply 1 volt through a resistor to make the meter show fsd, 0.5v = half scale and so on. Sorry simon, waffle mode set to warp 9.

Interesting piece of gear, Simon. Thank you for showing it to us and nice repair. Regards, David.

Interesting on the SINAD reading, thanks Simon, that gives me ideas.

That was really interesting to watch, Simon, great.
Cheers Theo. I try
@11:45 I think you might be looking at the wrong scale, -5 is shown exactly on the middle scale.
Yeah Scott spotted it a few minutes later.
@@SoddingaboutSi so you did 🤓
Ive had one of these for a while and never used it much, sadly mine does not have the SINAD filter. Good video, thanks 😊

Why don't you just use your hp8903 to measure sinad Simon ? I've got one it seems to work fairly well
I will and do. Fancied a easy to read analogue meter to read. Turns out it's not as straightforward as just reading the meter directly.

Sinadder! Nice. Lot's of gear sold on eBay as untested means it's broken but they might just get good money for it if they don't mention that fact!
Great video,TNX 4 upload! 73 N8AUM
Gosh Simon, I must be really dense but I just don't see how those dBm ranges relate to the meter reading itself...guess I need to watch again!
Look at the scale in red. It's not obvious I know.

You are reading the wrong range. The bottom range is for 330µW only. It says so on the meter panel! Sorry Simon, I'm glad you noticed yourself.
Yes. Spotted that in the video.

That’s a nice meter. Shame the SINAD reading is such a faff. Well done sorting the meter though
Wong Hai... Wong Hai.... oh, sorry... different joke... Wrong Scale!! Looks clean enough though and a nice fix on the meter.
