I was a beginner when started, but searched alot about how to use gears, physics behind them, n all. It helped alot in using them efficiently. My experieince says, we use gears to maintain the Cadence of 60-100 pedals per minute like u said in a video.
Using a 21-gear bike effectively involves understanding how the gears work and when to shift them for maximum efficiency. Here’s a guide: Understanding the Gear System Front Gears (3 Rings - Left Shifter): 1st Ring (Smallest): Easier to pedal, used for climbing steep hills. 2nd Ring (Middle): Moderate pedaling effort, suitable for flat terrain or slight inclines. 3rd Ring (Largest): Harder to pedal, ideal for speed on flat terrain or downhill. Rear Gears (7 Rings - Right Shifter): Lower numbers (larger rings): Easier to pedal, used for uphill. Higher numbers (smaller rings): Harder to pedal, used for speed. How to Use the Gears Start in a Low Gear: Begin with the front gear on 1 (smallest) and rear gear on 3-5 for easy pedaling. This helps you gain momentum without straining. Adjust Gears Gradually: Shift to a higher rear gear (e.g., 6-7) as the terrain flattens. If you’re going downhill, switch to the front 2 or 3 while using a mid-to-high rear gear. Climbing Hills: Use the front 1 (smallest) and a low rear gear (e.g., 1-3) for maximum ease. Cruising on Flat Terrain: Use the front 2 (middle) and a mid-range rear gear (e.g., 4-5) for steady pedaling. Descending: Use the front 3 (largest) and a high rear gear (e.g., 6-7) for speed and efficiency. Shifting Tips Shift Before the Terrain Changes: Anticipate hills or descents and shift before you reach them to avoid straining. Avoid Cross-Chaining: Don’t use extreme combinations like front 1 with rear 7 or front 3 with rear 1. This puts strain on the chain and drivetrain. Pedal Smoothly While Shifting: Keep pedaling lightly while shifting to avoid damaging the gears. Practice Makes Perfect Experiment with different gear combinations on various terrains to find what feels most comfortable and efficient for your riding style. Over time, you’ll intuitively know when and how to shift gears for the best performance
1F/1R-3R are for uphill. 2F/3R-5R are for accelerating and normal riding. 3F/5R-7R are for speed riding/downhill riding(to maintain 60-100 pedals logic)
climbing gear combination is low teeth in front and high teeth in rear. Where as for high speed is High teeth in front and low in rear. the aim is to maintain cardiovascular load vs muscular load in any situation (climbing/flat/downhill) the same is done by maintaining moderate to high cadence 60 to 90 rpm .
