Does this criticism apply to any Batman beyond the Nolan and Reeves films? My only experience with Batman is those films, TAS and the Arkham games. With those movies at least, it feels like the point of the villains is to take the sorry state of Gotham as a vehicle to peddle their various insane ideologies. They were also in it for revenge and/or a love of chaos. You can argue that's not the most compelling character trajectory, but it's not like Bane was advocating for nationalized healthcare before making a big bomb.
@@blobberberry Not really. Most of the comics have really unique takes on what they want to accomplish, and there's been a few times the comics point have made many of the villians logics and goals understandable. Outside Joker of course who just wanna cause chaos at all times. Like modern Freeze just wants to cure his wife and help people out that have it as well. He literally only steals to help fund the cure cause he was screwed over by the company he worked for. Most Batman villians have to be pushed to extremes before they get to the point of I'mma kill em all! Riddler just loves making traps and such, but like 90% of his stuff never trys to destroy all of Gotham. It's really only Joker now that I think of it and maybe Ra's?
@@blobberberry I still think The Batman's Riddler was a much better way of doing the "villain has a point" idea than Dark Knight Rises' Bane. Bane's criticisms of Gotham and the way it's run are never supported by the film itself in any way (even though they should have been), so any sympathy his position is meant to engender is contradicted by the story. The film venerates Gotham's police (who were inept and absurdly corrupt in the previous two films) and the prisoners who Bane frees partway through are all violent psychopaths who immediately start destroying the city. No one is wrongly imprisoned or victims of circumstance, just cartoonishly evil enough to make a fake court with Scarecrow and performatively kill the wealthy in the city. So, from the movie's perspective, Bane doesn't have a point at all, since all of his systemic observations are explained away as some people (cops) being inherently good and others (criminals( being inherently evil. And that's before his plan becomes blowing the city up as part of Talia's revenge on Bruce. Riddler's criticisms of Gotham, however, are fully correct, and part of Batman's arc is realizing how correct he is. The police are in the pocket of the mob, the huge city reform that was touted early in the movie turned out to be a money laundering scheme, and Bruce's own complacency as both Batman and Bruce Wayne has only allowed it continue. However, Riddler himself doesn't care about the corruption in Gotham; it's just a convenient framing device that will get his antics attention. It's why he's so vindictive against Bruce Wayne despite him having relatively less to do with the terrible state of the city than the others he targets, and it's why he sends his followers to target the new mayor at the film's climax, and it's why he's so angry at the film's end when the news outlets are all talking about Batman and not him. Riddler is a reflection of what Batman nearly becomes: a maniac indulging in violence as a response to childhood trauma who endangers the people of Gotham in their personal revenge quest.
"treasure of the kings they are forgotten, nobody remembered" is such a cool, raw line and then he follows it with "taking out the trash is something I remember" 😭😭
I've been randomly singing "ooooooooooh looks like somebody missed that fuckin shottt" since the reaction video dropped. that line is very pleasing to my brain
It is currently 10 PM. I need to be awake at 4 AM for work. I can’t get the Batman part out of my head. So here I am, accepting the fact that I will be very tired at work tomorrow.
This one is my favourite track of the latest volume. Not only did it kill with the ending, but the Batman tangent caught me so off guard I laughed my bladder off
I have an out of body experience every time my brain's record player plays "slapnuts.... mcgonacle~" or "that's cuz i'm cool :)" Obsessed with how the structure of the song is used to highlight the title-- it's so good
I will say, that's kind of a general problem with modern superhero media. "Villain has a legitimate point about the problems with the status quo, but their plan to deal with it involves too much collateral damage, so fuck it, deal with the immediate threat and then address nothing."
100%. the villain is never motivated by greed or power or genuinely villainous shit. they're motivated by wanting to change the world for the better. So the hero always has to fight on the side of the status quo. After several movies like this, you really start to pick up on the pattern of equating heroism to 'keeping things the way they are'
I love how almost pink floydian the underwater bits sound, its a lot like echoes!! idk why but I love that sound, and idk how to describe it, its like your underwater almost! like with that organ stuff in the quiet bits or like surfer rock!
I took a look at the time on the thumbnail thinking that this was an extended version, thinking “oh my god, what more did Arin rant about that we didn’t see before?” No, same length, I just forgot how long it was when Dan and Arin reacted to it.
I love this one. Actually every Sbassbear song gets stuck in my head like no other song can. Also my favorite off this new set of songs is Nasty Dad. Probably not in the majority on that one but that song kicks so much ass.
My bf was playing the new monster hunter game (the version you can try out rn), and someone random joined his hunt named McGonacle. My first immediate thought was this.
@@bazzfromthebackground3696 I mean the version they showed to the grumps. Sbassbear made some changes to the mix and the drum parts and I want that version
Question: How many of you read a single Batman comic, and saw anything else outside the Nolan trilogy and maybe the Batman (2022)? Because part about "Villains wanting to better the Gotham" is just simply untrue. Like... where did you guys even get that idea than ANY Gotham Villains give a damn about well-being of Gotham? Like, only villain that has well-being of Gotham even as remotely part of their motivation... is Anarky. Not even more sympathetic Batman Villains (Like Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy) give a genuine damn about Gotham, and are ready to throw Gotham away without second tought to achieve their goals
