  • This was an idea I had from watching some cool Eurorack videos where people are just leaving their racks on for livestreams with random generative setups. I'm into the whole ambient vibe and wanted to try that here. Thing is I definitely cant justify the expense of getting into Eurorack but I have picked up a few synths over the last year and use an iPad a lot for sequencing jams so I wondered could I get the same result using some apps.
First thing I did was download the midi implementation chart for my Minilogue xd, from that I checked what I could control via midi and then started playing around until I knew what parameters I wanted to modulate. The xd was always going to be the best option for pad/drone style sounds but I wanted the sound to be evolving and slowly at that.
For the DX7 I'm just using a preset with some filtering and FX.
The Volca Bass has its onboard filter running on a slow LFO setting and has another filter on the channel running even slower.
Like all my other jams, I'm sequencing everything using apps that are hosted in an app called AUM (Audio Unit Mixer), its essential in my opinion if you're using an iPad for any music production. It has a very visual and easy to understand way of handling midi also so if you're using hardware then I really recommend it.
The DX7 and the Volca Bass are being sequenced by an app called Cykle, its easy but deep. In this app you can control a lot of parameters and it makes polyrhythmic sequencing really easy which is great for randomization.
The xd is being used in polyphonic mode and I'm using 2 channels of an app called Polyphase. It's a great app but can be a bit crashy if not left in the foreground. From here I sequence on two different octaves.
On all mixer tracks there are Low Pass Filters that slowly open and close (within set ranges) over time. I try to offset the modulation on the filters so all instruments get their own space to open up.
The most useful thing here has been an app called mLFO. It give you customizable LFOs that you can set really slow cycles to, I've applied it to all filters and about 8 internal settings of the xd for making the low pad sound evolve slowly over time.
And of course there's general FX that are alway in these things, delay and reverb etc but I'll put all that in the apps list.
Overall I'm really happy with how this turned out, it needs more elements but the foundation is nice.
    Apps list FX:
    Reverb: FAC Alteza
    Delay: Other Desert Cities
    Phazer: FAC Phazer
    App list utility:
    LFOs: mLFO
Filters: Mooger Fooger bundle (only the LPFs)
    Apps list generative midi/sequencing:
    Cycle
    Polyphase
    AUV3 Host: AUM
That's basically it, if you're reading this then thanks for checking out my stream!
