I suspect Roger gets a massive kick from the irony of stroking and inflating the egos of those who are making it their life purpose to dissolve it, hahaha. Honestly, I, too, would get a kick out of that. Ironic humor tickles me very good. xD
Anyway, much love to Mathias from me too!

Sati is what true indian women used to be like. They had their own mind but they didn't indulge in vices. They used to be highly moral women. Wish such purity would come again in India.😔

If you go deeper into Sanatan Dharma you will find true God within you.
Tat Twam Asi (That god/power is within you).
Krishna also says only you can uplift or downgrade your soul.
Buddha says be your own light.
You cannot find god without finding your true self.
Also preaching is easy but finding that supreme energy is very difficult.

Sati was done willingly by some due to deep love. But it got a bad name when some shallow relatives started forcing the wives to do it to prove their love.

Sadhguru says feminine doesn't think about the consequences and does not care for material success but all my ex gfs were the opposite of what he has described and chose their career / guys with great careers over me. And it's not just me. I see it everywhere. Is it because they are not in tune with their real nature ? Or has kaliyoga ( capitalism) made them more masculine and 'analytical". Someone needs to ask this question to Sadhguru. Also I've seen that us indians can use beautiful words to justify evil acts. If a woman is indeed an enlightened being why would she leave her body just because her husband dies ? It would be valid if the husband also does the same thing when her wife dies. In my understanding I think people used few examples of sati , misinterpreted them and created evil practices.

Up until 2:25 I thought it was going to be a rehash of the Duck hunter story xD
*Edit:* *Apparently* *I* *needed* *to* *clarify* *that* *the* *following* *statement* *was* *meant* *for* *the* *crime* *committers* *of* *the* *time* *and* *not* *Indians* *in* *general.*
9:15 They saw the illiterate and uneducated, ego driven people forcing women against their will and tossing them into the fire. Whatever reason they come up with cannot justify, nor is any goal in their mind worthy of the blood of the innocent. Even if Sati was trying to follow or emulate the great place it was coming from as depicted in *(Edit:* *B.R* *Chopra's)* Mahabharat, it had devolved into what was a barbaric act, effortlessly recognizable as such by anyone with a heart. I shudder at the though of the kind of karmic inheritance such actions lead to. To such a practice, I say Good riddance! :P
Oh geez, being faced with such seemingly atrocious stuff is too much for the ego self here, it can only remind itself to surrender the world, in it's entirety to the Lord.

      @@TheB657 Hi there and Namaste!
I like your input overall, especially the first paragraph and I appreciate it, but I will focus on parts that I find to not be well thought out. I think you'll find it helpful.
It is nice to shed light on the historical origins of the practice and if the information is valid, it makes sense. Trying to expound on the terminology and what "True/Correct" "Sati" is doesn't change the fact that the ugly perversion of the practice is still called "Sati" and it is this that we are going to focus on.
I must confess that I did not have prior knowledge of records of the frequency of the murders or honor killings but surely it must have happened at least once for it to have been outlawed. Furthermore with regards to lawmaking and such acts it does not matter how many times or often it occurs, just once is bad enough to warrant criminalization. Which is something we can all infer is what it happened.
I do not know if it was widespread, nor did I claim it to be, but I doubt your anecdotal evidence with regards to your own family and 75+ other families brings much to the table about the occurrences over a nation as wide and long as India, especially during a time where it is already made illegal.
I just google searched when the British banned Sati and this is what I found: "The Bengal Sati Regulation which banned the Sati practice in all jurisdictions of British India was passed on December 4, 1829 by the then Governor-General Lord William Bentinck." The timing supports irrelevancy of your anecdotal evidence. But as a final point on this matter, I would like to mention a statement of truth: "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."
Actually, I just remembered one of the more famous stories which includes the commanding of a woman born in the 15th century to commit Sati after her husband died. Thankfully this one was protected by divinity. It is the story of Meera Bhai and for convenience, here is a time stamped URL link: ruclips.net/video/53Bo4TIObUw/видео.html
It is not a matter of blame, everyone makes mistakes out of ignorance but the act itself cannot be justified. I am of no doubt that the act of forcing another against their will to die by fire, even just to save them "save them" would have unpleasant karmic consequences. Not to mention, I highly doubt that the people forcing death by fire, were coming from such a loving place, it's all probably just out of pride and glamour. The whole thing is happening just because the husband has died. I mean think about the preposterous propositions going on underneath, here. It is saying that if the husband has died then she is not capable of defending herself nor will anyone else protect her and she shouldn't even try. Therefor, she should just give up on life and we should have her "voluntarily" jump upon the funeral pyre and die. It's so ridiculous, it's kind of laughable now that I think about it. Not that I'm saying you would disagree, I'm sure you would agree with me on this.
I, too, studied from the school syllabus you mention and that is exactly where I had first heard that the British banned Sati, it is from these teachings from my Highschool that I I made my earlier statement. I do recall there being bias in the textbooks though I don't know the extent of misinformation or omitting of Truth.
With regards to mentioning the misdeeds of other cultures or societies, doing such is not helpful to conversations. It does not justify the subject of the conversation which is still bad. No one will argue that misdeeds of other cultures in societies is okay and good. Everyone (save, maybe the criminal) agrees it is wrong but interjecting it as such is a deflection tactic, it only serves to move attention away from what was and still needs to be addressed in the moment. It is lame.
Thanks for caring for my emotions xD I, too, get worried about evoking a negative response when my intent is merely to dish out the truth and help others realize it. A lot of education is indeed very biased and I find myself disappointed too often when presented with media that's irreverent of Truth.
Hopefully, one day we can all step back from all cultures and civilizations without accepting one or another as "mine" or "Our own" and point fingers at all that is wrong and rectify it with impunity. Hare Krishna, , Krishna Hare Hare!

Great discussion here guys... I just want to make it clear that I agree with the both of you. Because it seems to me like you are talking about two very "different" things, that ended up having the same name due to causes and conditions and apparent similarities... The "Mass Sati" was not Sati at all. I agree with both of you that Mass Murder, or Suicide, or even singular Murder or Suicide is to be avoided.... And B is right that the traditional, ancient "true" practice of Sati as displayed by Madri in the Mahabharat was indeed a pure practice displayed by Devotion by highly advanced, pure spiritual beings, that had a higher sense of the true spiritual nature of Reality... And yes, regular people nowadays would have a difficult time understanding such things...
