This was my first year and eight store bought plants just thrived and became my new favorite flower!
Today, I cut them down and dug them up. On a break right now, youtube suggested your video as I'd already watch a couple others a few days ago.
A couple of the bunches are falling apart nicely into individual 'bulbs' but a few are very tight bundles. I had planned to gently break those bundles apart, but following your strategy, I'll leave a few in tact. Thanks for the encouraging video!

You’re welcome and thank you for commenting! You’re going to love your cannas even more each year since they multiply and/or get larger! The large ones make great privacy screens, too. My channel is not only about gardening, but about great values-cannas are the ultimate budget friendly plant! I saved so much $$ this year by using cannas in pots rather than buying annuals. Blessings to you-enjoy your canna lilies!

My sister has a row of cannas and never digs them up. She cuts them to ground level, and that's it. She has encouraged me to do the same. I'm curious why that is not a good idea since no one else seems to leave them in the ground during winter and wait for them to grow in the Spring. We live in Ohio.

Hello! I’ve had a few cannas come up after missing some from the year before. I might have gotten lucky because they were buried in a compost pile or next to a fence and covered w stone. I think if they are really protected, it would increase the chance of survival. Most of mine tend to grow really close to the surface of the ground so I’m quite sure they would freeze and die in my midwest area. Maybe you can test it with a few and see if they survive. Best wishes to you with your cannas!

@LivingBlessedOnLess Ok, thanks. My sister has hers growing against her house. She has never dug them up and she has plenty of them! They come up every year. So, I'm going to try and do the same this year. Probably cover them with mulch. And also, I will did one up in case my experiment doesn't work! Thanks for your reply.

Sounds like the side of the house offered enough protection to your sister’s cannas. I hope your experiment works out just as well as hers!

Didn't think about that. Maybe it is the house, thanks. Yes, I'm processing one of the cannas today. @@LivingBlessedOnLess

It depends on what zone you are in. I’m in a zone five. We have to dig them up.
