With the quality of those stickers showing up in promotional material, I figured the canopies were printed with white on them, and that Lego was doing their usual thing of never printing opacity on dark colors. Learning it's a sticker bewilders me, especially when this very same set has opaque white stickers!

Same here. I assumed they must be prints for it to look the way it does. So you have to go through the pain of putting the stickers on, and they're not even correctly color balanced? Someone somewhere messed up.

My best guess is that the design is finished correctly, they send it off to the factories, the factories somehow screw up the prints and stickers designs when translating them to mass production pieces, then Lego sees it and says "oh well, don't wanna bother spending the money to redo those"
But it continues to happen so often that I'm baffled why they don't take steps to avoid that mistake next time, which would both save them money and give us a better product

The canopy sticker situation here is baffling. So much time and money spent, and visual compromises made (not necessarily this set but across the board), to make solid toys that can be built by young kids... yet they include canopy stickers like these that can only be correctly applied by the steadiest of hands. Even I, a 27 year old, would struggle with those without getting air bubbles and fingerprints underneath. It's all about the kids experience until it comes to asking themselves "can we bother to spend a bit more on prints?" Not to mention the awful opacity but that's a separate issue altogether.

    • @dgray3771
      @dgray3771 21 час назад

I'm all on board with compromises to make sets more affordable and durable. That the design does not fall apart merely by picking it up. And your wings and other stuff doesn't start drooping on a shelf after a week. Lego put a lot of effort in it. With the newer designs and parts used for T fighters. How they build up and tile everything looking at the Tie bomber. But then to see this kind of print quality both on the parts and the sticker sheet is just shocking. Someone is dropping balls here. Actually the Ashoka Interceptor is much better in terms of quality. Yet the set is cheaper. Still overpriced but o well. And it has it's own little flaws like no lock on the canopy. But how it looks. Night and day difference. The opacity should never have happened. But also the printing on the tiles. It is atrocious. How long have they been putting out the parts that hold this color. Do they not test run?

I think buying a product and expecting them to en masse fix it is a little naive, as well as not a good consumer policy. The best way to let Lego fix it is NOT buying the set because it is faulty.
This is not a video game that you can patch later and fix all the bugs, it is a physical box with parts and stickers in it. To be fair I would be delighted if thousands upon thousands bought this and asked for proper prints, stickers or a refund, that would get it under their attention pretty fast, but not buying it and being extremely vocal about why you didn't is probably a more cost effective way.

I find all of your criticisms valid and reasonable. The fact that the ARC-170 seems like a fan favorite, with only 3 sets made over a period of 20 years, makes the content of this set sting even more. It may take LEGO a long time to release another version if we extrapolate the long timespan between the existing releases. LEGO has printed these canopies before, many times unless I'm mistaken. Very disappointing indeed.

I could begin to accept the $70 price tag if they included at least a second or even a third generic pilot (I love that we got both Jag and Oddball, but aren’t even in the same fleet, let alone the same ship, and some past X-Wings have been customizable for different pilots), a second astromech, and printed the canopies well. As it is, I can’t see myself paying more than $50 for this. As someone who wants to get 3 or 4 of these eventually to build a squadron, I’ll probably wait for a sale where it’s under $50. That will probably be a while.
I’m also starting to wonder if they’ll correct some of the quality issues mid-run given how loud, universal, and justified the outrage at the QC for this set has been. It’s extremely rare, but I think it’s happened before.

the brick built parts of this set seem lovely, but the canopy stickers… yeesh. i hope a potential second production run of this set improves the opacity of them, but asking consumers, let alone kids, to put those on accurately is not a bright idea. those really should have been prints, even if they could have only done one print for all three and reduced the accuracy of their shapes, it wouldve been preferable to fumbling the stickers. i think when i get my copy of this set i might just leave them off, at least for a little while to see if their absence bugs me more than having decals that aren’t very good.

I'm not against Lego making compromises for the sake of it being a toy. Because some folks need to remember that this is a toy and it needs to be sturdy and solid - which it is. As a toy, this is perfectly fine. I mean, what more could you need, it functions perfectly fine and it's as solid as a rock which is great. But, I am not afraid to say that just because it's a toy, doesn't mean you should cut corners. Even kids who are Star Wars crazy would be able to tell that the lazor cannons are way, way too short or that the canopy stickers are supposed to be white.
Lego just needs to stop pandering. They're sets are getting smaller and their prices are getting way too high.

Correct. I honestly think Lego Star Wars fans in particular are huge size queens among other things. These are toys. They need to be playable and not much else.
Regarding Lego: Yes, they've been cheapening out on us wherever they can. The issue goes both ways though. Because frankly... Why wouldn't they? They save money and the fanbase continues to preorder en masse. Pay full price. Year after year after year they continue to confirm Lego in their current business model.

While it seems to be that sets are seemingly smaller and have less piececount, this is not all across the board. There are many sets that still do a much better job at providing value, it is mostly Starwars and some other IP sets that go overboard on skimping on quality, value and price. The consumers still buy it, so why would they bother improving on it?

Downright shameful, especially at the pricepoint. I'd certainly feel less bad about the always-high cost of Lego if their quality wasn't actively going down! The most annoying thing with this set is that you've called them out on the stickers being off colour on the canopies and false advertising on the packaging for a long time, as far back as the Resistance Y-Wing set from late 2019, over FIVE years ago! That's the earliest I remember you calling them out on those issues, there may have been an earlier review where you did call them out on those issues, but the fact that we're still seeing these issues in 2025 is absolutely unforgivable.

  • @thelonious2213
    @thelonious2213 22 часа назад

Hey Jang! I've found a makeshift solution for the stickers looking gray when applied. I've purchased the same type of canopy pieces, but in the transparent clear color. This way the color matches much better thanks to the non-dark surface which they're applied to. Granted, I still had to purchase additional pieces to make the model look better, but I take what I can get.
I like the set overall, and in my opinion it recieves a lot of unfair criticism regarding the price, as, when adjusted for inflation, the set that is compared favorably to this by many, the 2010 model, would cost $84 USD today. It's not a bad nor a great deal. It's just too bad about the size of the cannons and especially the quality on those prints and stickers.
Thanks for the more objective review that most others have failed to provide!

If they attempt another ARC-170, they're gonna have to do a lot better next time. Keep the wing mechanism, include more prints, scale close to the 2010 version as possible.
And personally, I'd want 3 generic clone pilots to make it massable. We don't get enough small army building sets anymore. Especially when the Rebel Alliance and moreso the CIS keep getting left out. We have a lot more Star but a lot less Wars.

You’d think they’d look at this from a QC perspective and reinforce the motto ‘Only the best is good enough’ but it feels like the actual company motto is ‘Eh, good enough, they’ll buy it anyway’.

generally i like stickers. i primarily buy sets to heavily customize and i've had more positive experiences with stickers than negative ones. being able to leave them off when needed or put them on other pieces as needed. with that said, there's no reason the canopies here should use stickers at all and no excuse as to why they're so poor quality. if i'm paying $70 for a relatively small model it is absolutely unacceptable to have such a major quality issue

I think if they had proper guns that were longer and the second smaller one above it, with the spring loaded shooter on the side and the wings were like a third longer it would be a fine set. Also I know it wouldn’t work bc of the mechanism but I wish the spring loaded shooters fit under the fighter like how the flick missiles we’re on the 2010 one

Interestingly, the copy of the set I picked up had perfect colour-matching on the prints, but the dark red stickers were essentially brown. I absolutely agree with your points about the QC Jang; it's disappointing that LEGO continues to drop the ball with their production quality. It seems a shame to me that (in my opinion) a well-designed set like this is let down by baffling quality issues.

The comparison between the X Wing and the Arc 170 are actually surprisingly close to scale. The Arc 170 is canonically 12.7m and the X Wing 12.5. maybe the X Wing should be a few studs shorter or the Arc 170 a few studs longer, but this is actually quite close to correct
The reason for this being that the Prequel starfighters are just absolutely tiny. The X Wing is pretty close to the size of a real world fighter jet, but the Prequel "small" ships are very much "small" in every sense of the word

It would be the same if the canopy glass was printed. Check out the colour match on the original imperial shuttle. The white is still washed out compared to the white bricks and is printed on a lighter tint. Granted it’s still better than a sticker as you don’t get bubbles and easier to put together.

Extremely reasonable review, as always! I appreciated your comments about the price (that $70 isn't inappropriate, given its size / relative to other iterations of this set / adjusted for inflation, but $70 is still $70 at the end of the day, which warrants higher-quality prints and stickers).

I'm glad you mentioned the need for cheese slopes and longer guns in addition to the canopy debacle. The set could also use parts on the nose but Lego took every opportunity to cut corners on this thing and the end result is disappointment no matter how you slice it. 70 bucks for this feels as close to a scam as Lego can pull given what's on the box. Extremely disappointing.

People need to understand that LEGO is not your friend, a small company or a charity. Yes, they sell toys, but they are still a enormous corporation that have their profit and the happiness of their shareholder as a priority. The only way quality might change for the better is if another brick-toy manufacturer become important enough to become a threat to their market share or if suddenly, we all stop purchasing their product.

I loved this video, and I love your reviews, but one thing stood out to me. You saying "Lego has always been expensive"
This is 100% a true statement. But that doesn't mean it's the right thing for Lego to do. 70$ for a few pounds of plastic is absolutely insane. Lego's average price-per-piece production cost is about 1/10th of a cent USD. They are charging an average of 12-15 cents per piece for these sets. That's a 1200-1500% increase in pricing. for reference, many countries in the world would accuse you of price gouging for that kind of markup.
And yes, it is a pure markup. That 1/10th of a cent average includes employee wages, packaging, instruction prints, and even the CEO's paycheck. 1500% profit margin. Most companies consider a healthy profit margin to be in the range of 10-15% profit. This is 1000-1500% profit margin.
For a company that had around 9 billion USD in revenue last year, we all know they can easily afford to spend a lot less to produce and sell these kits. If you ask me, 70$ for plastic is price gouging. I can buy a 55 gallon plastic drum, that uses better plastic than Lego, for around 100$. That is significantly more plastic for a fraction of the cost. Lego's prices are not okay.
The old ARC-170 cost 60$ USD. This new one has less pieces and costs more. Inflation is bad, but it isn't THAT bad. Lego should be ashamed of themselves.

I'd probably cut up the sticker backing for something like this, much rather test-fit with it still on the backing sheet so it doesn't catch floating dust. And at that point I'm curious if a band-aid style application (backing split in the middle, so you place it, then peel half from the middle outward and stick it, then peel the other half and stick it) is the way to go. Not really something I'd expect kids to manage on their own though.

Jakg try requesting they replace parts from another reason like Europe. I'm tired of other people making excuses for stuff with Lego that I find not acceptable. I *will* complain about price and quality in equal measure when Lego is Scrooge McDucking in profits nowadays. With the bad stickers and prints this is at most worth $50, and even then the canopy stickers are still unacceptable. I know the bean counters are all too happy to cut costs every step of the way to pad their wallets, and their cheapskating is crossing the line, and I swear working retail only exacerbates how much I despise milking customers to the last possible penny.

This was one of the SW sets I wanted and was looking forward to. I didn't mind the reduction in size, since I think most SW fighters are too big (and the larger ships too small). And happy to see it's mostly good.
Honestly, seeing the review I thought the canopy stickers were supposed to be grey, until you pointed out that the real thing and the product pictures have it white. This is frankly horrible. Already think that these shouldn't be stickers, but stickers in the wrong shade is already inexcusable and being the wrong colour really is.
Still going to be buying the set. Maybe I won't apply the stickers, maybe I will. I always make a scan of the sticker sheet prior to applying them and maybe I could make the part white and print them on a stickersheet myself. But I really shouldn't have to.

If Funwhole or Pantasy can make excellent sets with all prints--and beautiful ones at that--and sell them for half the price of Lego, it's blatantly apparent that's it's not that hard and not that expensive to do all prints and do them well. Lego is just cutting corners and delivering a sub-par product.
