  • To estimate copper in given copper sulphate solution a series of different volumes of copper sulphate solution was taken (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 & 12.0 ml) in 5 different 25 ml volumetric flasks. To each flask 2.5 ml Ammonium hydroxide solution was added and then diluted up to the mark with distilled water. The solutions were mixed to make them homogeneous.
A blank solution was also prepared containing only 2.5 ml ammonium hydroxide and water but without copper sulphate solution in a 25 ml flask.
The colorimeter whose initial reading was 1 when switched on was then employed for the recording of the absorbance of the prepared solutions.
With the help of Blank solution taken in the nessler tube the reading was adjusted to "0" at a given wavelength in this case it was 590 nm.
After this one by one all the solutions absorbance was measured and recorded at 590 nm.
The given test solution whose concentration was to be determined was also treated with 2.5 ml ammonium hydroxide and diluted to 25 ml in the standard flask and then its absorbance was measured in the same way as the above solutions at 590 nm.
A calibration curve was plotted and the concentration of the test solution was determined using this calibration curve.
The experiment is based on Lamberts and Beers Law.
