Maureen McCormick apparently also didn't participate in "The Bradys" because because she had recently had a baby and wasn't ready to go back to work. If you've ever seen the cast-members reunite on the NBC sitcom "Day by Day" back in 1989 (which incidentally, co-starred Christopher Daniel Barnes, who would go on to play Greg Brady in the two feature films from the '90s), Maureen was noticeably pregnant.
For what it's worth, Barry Williams wrote in his book "Growing Up Brady" that the real reason why Maureen wasn't involved with "The Bradys" because at the time, she was just over the show Brady Bunch thing and just wanted to move on with her life and career.

3:10 - To put that rating in perspective, the #1 rated show this week had 5.36 million viewers and Thursday Night Football had 11 million viewers. Both considered hits.

  • @alanwright8819

Barry Williams talks at length about The Bradys in his book "Growing Up Brady." I believe he suggested that what ultimately lead to the show's demise was too many characters to keep track of. The original Bunch was about a mom, dad, six kids, and the housekeeper (and for a time, the family dog). Now you've got the kids all grown up with spouses, significant others, and, in some cases, kids of their own. The tic-tac-toe board in the opening needed to be expanded.
And, of course, Robert Reed butted heads with the Schwartzes like in the good old days. They were really pissed when Reed went directly to CBS executives with his complaints about the direction of the show.

Seeing the success of the Conners today and Fuller House lasting 5 seasons, kind of makes you wonder, if a Brady sequel series could have lasted a few seasons in this decade instead of the 80s/90s? Obviously pretty impossible now but Conners has survived despite Roseanne being gone and Michelle never being in Fuller House because Olson Twins never wanted part of it. I could easily see “The Bradys” having the story of Mike Brady actually dying if it was able to happen in this decade lol

For example, the Brady Bunch was a failure compared to the Norman Lear and MTM sitcoms that aired in the same generation with. His two shows succeeded in syndication on the UHF channels to the after-school kids crowd.

Something the networks never understood. The success of theBrady Bunch came in the syndicated reruns. It was kids watching kids they’re own age. Wether they were teenagers, or still awkward preteens we related to them. It didn’t work so much seeing the kids as adults. It also made no sense to have them go back to they’re parents. It might have made more sense seeing them raise they’re own kids remenicing about they’re own childhood, and even that would have A short shelf life.

I don't know if it was trying imitate Eight is Enough so much as it was trying to hop on the dramedy/yuppies with first world problems trend that was going on at the time. When The Bradys was being produced, we had shows like Moonlighting, Thirtysomething, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Hooperman, The Slap Maxwell Story, and Frank's Place.

I watched the technical 2nd episode where Marcia's family was living with mike & carol and mike decides to run for city council and they're in a temporary house? It was alright? It wasn't the end of the world. Robert Reed was pretty good. My library has it because it came with the complete series.

I remember watching A Very Brady Christmas a few days before Christmas in 1989 with my parents as I was a fan of the show. I enjoyed it. And I remember I was thrilled when I found out that CBS was bringing back The Bradys. Boy, did my thrill turn to utter disappointment.
I thought that it would be a comedy and similar to the original. But I was bummed when I watched the first episode and found it was a Dramedy and was put off at the darker storylines that this show had over the lighter and funnier ones that I enjoyed on the Brady Bunch.
Besides the darker tone, there is another thing that killed the show. It competed with Full House and Family Matters on ABC. No way that The Bradys was going to last in that time slot. And thank God that it didn't last.

I get such a kick out of how, like with the variety show, they felt they had to show images of the kids in their younger years during the opening credits - as if we might not know who they are. Not to mention, it made fake Marcia and fake Jan's photos stand out like a sore thumb, since seeing childhood pics of people we didn't know just shone a bright light on the fact that it wasn't the original actors.

That whole house moving was a really selfish solution by the Bradies! I mean what about all the other people in their old neighbourhood who can't afford to move their houses and are going to lose their homes? At first the Bradies were going to help their neighbours too, but as soon as an easier solution for their personal problem presented itself all the other people in the neighbourhood were suddenly irrelevant.

I watched one episode of this when Urkel was in reruns. My father watched Dallas anyway. BTW Dallas was not exactly a picnic in this era either.
This episode felt a little more vicious. Was this because of the copyright crap? Or just the hatefulness of this show. The Brady Brides, the movies and even the Variety Show felt true to the spirit of the original

You left out one of the craziest things. The show was failing and I guess to try and make it more like the original show they added a laugh track. A laugh track on a serious drama with no real jokes. You can hear it in some of the clips in your video. So you get scenes like alcoholic Marcia stealing booze from her dad's liquor cabinet. Her mom walks in unexpectedly and Marcia hides the liquor bottle behind her back. Then mom says, "Marcia, what's behind your back?" BIG LAUGH. !?!?! What? That's not funny! She's an alcoholic!!!
