  • John Gurda shares with viewers developments aimed at improving Milwaukee's water quality. We’ve come a long way in cleaning up Milwaukee’s waterways, but industrialization during the 20th century has left several feet of toxic sediment that is a threat to human health and a killer of aquatic life. Since 1987 the Milwaukee, Wisconsin estuary-our harbor and the rivers that feed it-has been a federally designated Area of Concern, one of 43 hot spots on the Great Lakes. Milwaukee is poised to launch the biggest clean-up effort in the Great Lakes' history.
This toxic legacy is lurking beneath our Milwaukee rivers and must be removed before Milwaukee can enjoy our waters with complete safety. Our generation has the opportunity to leave our rivers better than we found them for future generations to enjoy.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District is partnering with the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, We Energies, and Port Milwaukee to create a new Dredged Material Management Facility (DMMF) in the Milwaukee harbor. When it is completed, this facility will provide safe, secure containment for 1.9 million cubic yards of sediment removed from the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers. Is there anyway that you could install biowales in the streets to stop the amount of run off that occurs? Maybe plant, plants that can “filter” the water and make it more clean for the aquatic life and more importantly all life around that given ecosystem? I think that controlling water run off is an important thing to do and would help the city of milwaukee be a healthier and greener city.

Hi, Ramen, MMSD works with the local community to add green infrastructure tactics such as bioswales along city streets and green roofs to help adsorb water where it falls and to help reduce polluted stormwater runoff. Green infrastructure captures, absorbs, or stores rain and melting snow, taking on numerous shapes and sizes from 55-gallon rain barrels to rain gardens, trees, and porous pavers for parking lots, driveways, and sidewalks. Join us to manage water where it falls on your property and become a Fresh Coast Guardian. www.mmsd.com/what-we-do/green-infrastructure

Salt stored in harbor leaches into Lake Michigan. Why does no one ever talk about how Lake Michigan has been harmed?

Hey Big Sister: insider info incoming. Listening to many swing voters. Unfortunately these morons think pocket book first, democracy second. I am listening to many of them who want to see good policies for small businesses. I have more info but not willing to share. One more thing. Keep an eye on Georgia. Love you big sis =) Also don't take offense to the song I am about to play. Just go with it =)
