  • This is my June 2012 Irish tenor banjo lesson. In it I look at my own right hand and try to see what I can do to improve it. I compare my own right hand to that of some very well known players and find that I am lacking so I propose a few solutions and will be working on them in the next month.

You can play with triplets on the up stroke. Angelina Carberry does it with no problems. If you get some of her CDs you can't go wrong emulating her.

What thickness of a pick (I'm using a Dunlop .60mm now) would you recommend I use as a fledgling tenor banjo student? I'm a veteran 5 string Scruggs player that has been bitten by the Irish tenor banjo bug...... in a bad way! LOL! Thanks...

I've noticed that your triplets often start on a downstroke. I can only do consistent triplets starting with an upstroke. Should I change? I can only do triplets right now, but I'm worried that as I develop this approach will prevent me from learning more difficult ornaments. Are there any players out there that favor an upstroke triplet?

For triplets, would you recommend always starting them with a downstroke? Or can you start on an upstroke?

You can do both, in fact some teachers recommend that you learn both especially for jigs.

Ok, that's a relief! I had been using both (depending on where it comes in the melody)
