Never trust a blue bumper, even if it looks harmless like here at the beginning. Always expect it to attack and try to draw him to one side so you can immediately dodge to the other side. I hear you. Usually I avoid them like you described, but here I thought my Spin Attack's s would save me. I don't know if I activated it too late (you can see the start of the animation) or if it was lag, but yeah, dodging would've been the way to go.
Spin attacks protect you and maintain speed against player collisions, but I'm pretty sure they only reduce the damage and speed loss from hitting a bumper a little bit, not remove it entirely!
