@@DJROCKSTAZ I don't believe a single card decides the tier of a guild. His evaluation is based upon combination of early and late game threats combined with synergy and the most important factor in Magic.. card advantage. Both red and white have always been terrible at that.
The second part, where he put boros as tier 3 is about gold(multicolored) cards, but when he said white and red are good, was talking about a deck with single coloured cards.
Don’t underestimate that blue black planeswalker and here is why that mill 4 cards can end up being very deadly if you don’t pick the correct time to remove it. Remember this is a mid to late game set and you normally have 40 cards. Assume it is dropped on turn 3 you already only have 30 cards and you then will have 26 from the -1 if you don’t get rid of that card at the proper time you not only risk getting milled out but you also risk losing potential cards you need to win or synergies with. I have played 5 pre releases in this set online and that card is a monster I won 4 games in a row just by milking out my opponent and stalling the game with black removal
First prerelease event ever for me. Just returned to MTG having only played for several months-ish about 7 years ago, but super stoked for WotS and already have my $$ ready for a box. I haven’t seen too many people feel the same as me about this, but for old times sake I am probably most psyched to play with the new Sorin. Obviously not exactly the best planeswalker in the set, but I’ll dig and find some good synergy!
Another solid video for another solid set. Keep 'em coming bud! :D Edit: Good note on gauging the power level of your opponent's planeswalkers, especially in an event where everyone's just playing for fun.
If anyone accidentally gets 2 Ashioks, they better play them. Add in some discard and kill spells to slow down the game, and you’ve got a .500 or better deck. JANK!!! If you mill 20 cards+, opponent loses turn 13-14 no matter what. That’s just too much fun. If opponent has any draw spells or things that burn through library, it’s even faster.
Your English isn’t great. Are you saying that Ashiok just helped opponent win because they played a Jace? That’s the risk you run if you’re playing JANK. Jace is hard to build around in limited. Really tough, especially if it’s 1 copy. A 2 Ashiok deck could accidentally mill Jace anyway. And I wouldn’t worry about Jace unless opponent has 3 Islands out.
@@chrisp2757If your opponent does burn through his library by using the new Jace, then your plan backfires. It's meant to be funny, I have not thought about practicality. :)
I imagine if you somehow get 2 kioras, you'd probably want to run Gruul since green and red have 2 or 3 times more creatures with 4+ power than the other colors. Gotta maximize that #walue. Also, I would laugh if I got to have kiora and ilharg out, and repeatably drawing cards off of the sneak attack.

Izzet, gruul, simic (late games) 3. The randomization of this set Angers me so far. I bought 3 boxes and 2 pre release kits and I didn't get one explosion zone. The one card i want 😖 I'm going to pick up two more boxes today 🤑.
This will be my first prerelease and this video helped tremendously! I have a couple plans I'm hoping pan out with the cards I crack open. I'll be revisiting this video a couple times to widen my strategy in case my plans don't come through. Thank you!

Ajani was absolutely disgusting. Ugin snuck in a lot of damage for me too. I would just swing in with a 2/2 and they usually never wanted me to get the card. Even if it was a land or something, they would just think I wanted the card to my hand and take the damage instead.
Update for no reason: it was really fun , lost all the matches (not all the games though), I now feel like I have a much better understanding of what to do in a draft + even though I didn't open any mythics, I did open a Teferi time raveler and a Karn the great creator. So not bad I think.

Selesnia has the bomb cards but it has missing that “umbf”. Played it, went 2 loss, 1 draw, 2 wins. Came 13 out of 22 on leaderboard. So, is it going to be slow? Yes! Set has lot of Commander value cards

I just started playing Magic just a year ago and I have found my fav color combo selesnya I am currently building a cat deck but as I was looking at the new Ajani planeswalker im confused on why it is the only planeswalker to have an add loyalty to other planeswalkers? is that a special power that Ajani has and is it more useful to always have him in your deck for that add loyalty? great video!!

Weak 1 and 2 even 3 drops are always cards I try to stay away from. Sure they’re okay if played at the perfect time, but mid-late game they are a wasted card. It’s hard to say here’s outright cards to never play, because it feels like you can build a lot of synergy in this set so a card may be bad in one deck, but pretty good in another.

just go 5 color good stuff, put 2-3 of each basic land card in yoru deck and hope for the best never failed me before never went 3-1, 2-2, 1-3 or 0-4 with it. then again i never tried it so 4-0 never happened either

Always depends on your card pool. I don’t think any recent set has a “play this no matter what” option that’s strong without the right cards, you know what I mean?
Hey, did you make some sort of list that you got all the cards from while recording the video/did anybody make one themselves? I would write one myself from the video, but I wanted to ask if it was possible to get it before. I'm planning ahead a lot and I'm "tryharding" because I'm hoping to get top 5 this time, but I can't remember all the good cards, and I think if I evaluate them myself at prerelease I would mess up. Sweetness!! I can't wait for this set, I went to ravnica allegiance pre-release and I got an okay card pool my friend pulled absolute garbage, so hopefully him an I will pull some better cards this time around, however I did manage to get some staples for some commander and my standard deck.
Best of luck, dude - that is always rough having a bad card pool. But, at least you got those commander playables. Here's to us both getting some sweet cards for the prerelease AND our commander decks!
I would only play them if you have that many and probably a good amount of proliferate. There is so much cheap removal that if you get them to a 2/2 or 3/3 they are still going to get removed if your opponent doesn't have a creature that can handle them. It will certainly be a card to keep an eye on though as we better understand the format!
So I normally have 17 land, maybe 15-17 creatures and 6-8 spells. But if I am opening 6 planeswalkers in the prerelease - how do those fit in the planeswalkers? Do I reduce my creatures even though I need them to protect the planeswalkers? Or reduce my instants/sorceries? What's a good general ratio given that have never seen a set like this before?
This is one of the things I’ll really be debating in the moment. I’m leaning towards if they create creatures count them as creatures. If they act as only “enchantments” then treat them as non-creatures.
Mountain Man Magic That makes sense but it still seems I am going to have a really different mix/curve if I end up with 3 or more planeswalkers. I can’t see giving up removal- so maybe fewer creatures... and fewer or no enchantments
I’d say be careful with the PWs. Too many people will play 3 color decks without any version of dual lands. A more aggro deck will probably earn you a good record. Losing to fairly vanilla creatures in a deck that curves out won’t feel good when you’re waiting to find your mana to cast your PWs and opponent ignores them and just goes after your life total. Depending on your PWs, I’d say the Inst/Sorc are what you want to lose, because of what I mention above, unless you get some good rare spells. Call me crazy, but I usually play 16 lands. I also tend to just let opponent go first to be on the draw, and as long as I have two lands and a couple spells I can cast, or a two drop and mostly three mana spells, I just keep every hand. If opponent mulligans and I keep on the draw, it’s a huge advantage, especially when I have a 50% chance to draw one extra non land over the course of a longer game.
Thanks a lot for the sub! I haven't had time this weekend to start my specific card rankings, but most of what I've seen the bombs are either gold cards, or the rare/mythics spot. I like to read through the rares and mythics a couple times to get a feel for them, so I'd say go to Scryfall.com and sort by rarity, and start praying you pull the ones you like the most. lol
I think that Amass is going to get out of hand especially with proliferate if it’s not dealt with early on. In limited the odds of pulling a good amount of removal isn’t going to be that high......LOADS OF ZOMBIES!!!

I'm hoping for a fizzy Mardu brew at my prerelease. But, you gotta roll with it at prerelease, in RNA got Rakdos and had to Orzhov splash red cause my red side of the box tanked haaaaard, but playset Orzhov gates, Teysa 3 Mortify and a bunch of afterlife. Still did well /Shrug
All the more reason to just play two colors, or mono red if you open good enough red. I would guess some people at prerelease will throw in too many colors because of the PWs, so aggro creatures are all you really need
Because it generally lends itself to aggro, while with so much removal and value in this set, it might run out of steam too quickly. Each of the two colors are better with other colors than with each other.
Gotta say I was most disappointed by the Amass mechanic. It just wasn't as impactful as I thought it would be. Also it feels like there's no creatures in the set. I have a really hard time putting together a sealed deck with more than 10 playable creatures.

I’m gonna play grixis amass because I’m doing 2hg so I get to build from two pools
I do really poor in pre releases (Except Dominaria, i did amazing in that pre-release. (Slimefoot was amazing in that set and i managed to pull 2)
Red for assault and heavy hitting. White has flying AMD reminds me of angels which is nice.
All the common plainswalkers are ones that die

Cat decks are awesome! Good luck with that. Ajani has the plus ability, because he’s a rare, unlike the uncommon ones which only have minus abilities.

just go 5 color good stuff, put 2-3 of each basic land card in yoru deck and hope for the best
never failed me before
never went 3-1, 2-2, 1-3 or 0-4 with it.

In my life I played only 1 prerelease tournament (GRN) but this set look like a good for pre because there is lot of cool cards
What decks do u think will be best? Do u think esper control, sultai midrange etc. will be strong no matter what?
Always depends on your card pool. I don’t think any recent set has a “play this no matter what” option that’s strong without the right cards, you know what I mean?

My wife got them for me on Etsy. The exact ones I don’t think are available still, but there’s plenty of other options available on the site.
Hey, did you make some sort of list that you got all the cards from while recording the video/did anybody make one themselves? I would write one myself from the video, but I wanted to ask if it was possible to get it before. I'm planning ahead a lot and I'm "tryharding" because I'm hoping to get top 5 this time, but I can't remember all the good cards, and I think if I evaluate them myself at prerelease I would mess up.

Sweetness!! I can't wait for this set, I went to ravnica allegiance pre-release and I got an okay card pool my friend pulled absolute garbage, so hopefully him an I will pull some better cards this time around, however I did manage to get some staples for some commander and my standard deck.
Best of luck, dude - that is always rough having a bad card pool. But, at least you got those commander playables. Here's to us both getting some sweet cards for the prerelease AND our commander decks!

I don’t believe so since you only get 2 in each arena pack vs. the 3 in paper boosters.

I feel charmed stray would be a great late game card (if you get 3-4 copys) what do you think?
I would only play them if you have that many and probably a good amount of proliferate. There is so much cheap removal that if you get them to a 2/2 or 3/3 they are still going to get removed if your opponent doesn't have a creature that can handle them. It will certainly be a card to keep an eye on though as we better understand the format!
So I normally have 17 land, maybe 15-17 creatures and 6-8 spells. But if I am opening 6 planeswalkers in the prerelease - how do those fit in the planeswalkers? Do I reduce my creatures even though I need them to protect the planeswalkers? Or reduce my instants/sorceries? What's a good general ratio given that have never seen a set like this before?
This is one of the things I’ll really be debating in the moment. I’m leaning towards if they create creatures count them as creatures. If they act as only “enchantments” then treat them as non-creatures.
Mountain Man Magic That makes sense but it still seems I am going to have a really different mix/curve if I end up with 3 or more planeswalkers. I can’t see giving up removal- so maybe fewer creatures... and fewer or no enchantments
I’d say be careful with the PWs. Too many people will play 3 color decks without any version of dual lands. A more aggro deck will probably earn you a good record. Losing to fairly vanilla creatures in a deck that curves out won’t feel good when you’re waiting to find your mana to cast your PWs and opponent ignores them and just goes after your life total.
Depending on your PWs, I’d say the Inst/Sorc are what you want to lose, because of what I mention above, unless you get some good rare spells.
Call me crazy, but I usually play 16 lands. I also tend to just let opponent go first to be on the draw, and as long as I have two lands and a couple spells I can cast, or a two drop and mostly three mana spells, I just keep every hand.
If opponent mulligans and I keep on the draw, it’s a huge advantage, especially when I have a 50% chance to draw one extra non land over the course of a longer game.

I haven't had time this weekend to start my specific card rankings, but most of what I've seen the bombs are either gold cards, or the rare/mythics spot. I like to read through the rares and mythics a couple times to get a feel for them, so I'd say go to Scryfall.com and sort by rarity, and start praying you pull the ones you like the most. lol

I think that Amass is going to get out of hand especially with proliferate if it’s not dealt with early on. In limited the odds of pulling a good amount of removal isn’t going to be that high......LOADS OF ZOMBIES!!!
Removal is too frequent in this set for only ONE token to be any good. Amass is underwhelming

I'm hoping for a fizzy Mardu brew at my prerelease. But, you gotta roll with it at prerelease, in RNA got Rakdos and had to Orzhov splash red cause my red side of the box tanked haaaaard, but playset Orzhov gates, Teysa 3 Mortify and a bunch of afterlife. Still did well /Shrug

Yeah we are spoiled with how strong they were in RNA.
All the more reason to just play two colors, or mono red if you open good enough red.
I would guess some people at prerelease will throw in too many colors because of the PWs, so aggro creatures are all you really need

How can white-red be the best combination with the most removal, and yet you put Boros in bottom tier?
Because it generally lends itself to aggro, while with so much removal and value in this set, it might run out of steam too quickly. Each of the two colors are better with other colors than with each other.
what do i do if ppl sneak ajani's pridemates from the challenger deck into pre release from reaching into their backpack without ppl knowing?
Well that Ajani can’t be opened in booster packs. You can only get that one in the planeswalker deck.
Gotta say I was most disappointed by the Amass mechanic. It just wasn't as impactful as I thought it would be. Also it feels like there's no creatures in the set. I have a really hard time putting together a sealed deck with more than 10 playable creatures.
