  • In this video, we discuss the physics behind dielectrics, and how on an atomic level this leads to various macroscopic changes. We introduce various new quantities such as polarisation, electric displacement, susceptibility and relative permittivity.
Near then end we apply these concepts to a problem involving a dielectric material, and how it changes the electric field in that vicinity.
    Approximate timestamps:
1:08 - Comparison between electric fields in a vacuum and space
    6:17 - Introduction of dielectrics
7:19 - Atomic representation of dielectrics
13:32 - Polarisation and displacement fields
21:24 - Divergence of the displacement
27:56 - Susceptibility, relative permittivity and constituent relations
32:28 - Applying generalised gauss' law to a dielectric

How is the D term independent of the polarisation?
