- Hearview: while there are many different discussions on this- I’m focusing on the exploitation and riding off @mrpituk ‘s discussion. Our Deaf community is vulnerable because language has power - so if there’s a finger to point- point at a hearing owned company. Protect our Deaf community.

Hello! This topic is about Hearview! First of all, the transcript for this video is in this post/comment section if you prefer to read this instead. Ok well this is a very hot topic and a lot of discussions have been going on. It is also very layered. There are a lot of topics- it is not just “one” topic like some discussions on why Deaf content creators have been promoting this, product is expensive and seems some have found a cheaper product but the prices have not been stable and questions on if the other product has the same features, etc; Hearview is a hearing owned company - and many other topics as well. I am not going to discuss those because many have already made videos and mentioned these etc. I am riding on “exploitation” specifically language exploitation. One Deaf person made a vlog about this topic- Randy Jackson. I am going to add to this including my own opinion/statements. Our Deaf community is very vulnerable for exploitation. Why? Language. English is not always our best suit. It is not our fault. English and the language use of it- it is easy for a hearing owned company to take advantage of that with those who are not well versed with English. It is easy to eat the words from a hearing person because we are a vulnerable community. I do want to make it clear that Hearview is a TOOL. It is not a form of language access. It is in the same category as cochlear implants, hearing aids, Otter Ai (live transcript app), etc. that is where Hearview belongs to. That glasses does not help language access. No. Now, for us Deaf community, I hope this is a wake up call for us Deaf community including Deaf content creators, etc. that when a hearing owned company comes to us with the tools they have “created” for us- we need to ask questions. We need to do our research. Make sure we know what we should know. When a hearing owned company comes up to us telling us that they created something for us and we quickly say YES SURE! They butter us up then milk the money from us- where does the profit go? It goes to a hearing owned company and leaving us scrambled, confused, divded, discussing about what just “happened.” Hearing people can easily move forward and be financially comfortable- they see our discussions as minor “hiccups.” How can we protect our Deaf community? We are a vulnerable community. Clarification- I am NOT saying that NO hearing owned company can ever invent anything for us. I believe in collaborative work. I believe a hearing owned company inventing things for Deaf people need to have Deaf people on their team. I believe we need to ask how a hearing owned company can give back to our Deaf community. When they profit money from our community, how can they give back to us? Like 99% of hearing owned companies do not do that- they get the money for themselves and give nothing to the Deaf community except “freebies” with a selected few. We still suffer with language depritivation. We still suffer with communication access. We still suffer that we cannot get a fricking interpreter for a doctor’s appointment! I hope this is a wake up call for us that we need to do our research first. We need to ask each other questions. We need to discuss about the benefits of the tools. We need to check first with a hearing owned company that want to do something for the Deaf community- in what ways are they giving back to us? Do they really know our community? Deaf people have on their team? Collaborative work- I believe that. Me personally I am more angry with the hearing people on “top” with power. They would throw things in our community and causing us to be divided and confused. Is it a solution? No it is not a solution. I just wanted to share my perspective. We really need to protect our Deaf community. All of us. Every person in our community- we need to protect each other.

This is the development of "hearing" oligarchy. We need Deaf ecosystem!!
Thank U Thank U for sharing this!!! Yes I agree we Deaf need to protect ourselves!!!
I assume hearing aids, cochlear implants, and the glasses (which should be called READVIEW not hearview, misleading and rude), were all invented by hearing people. I think anyone who has an invention that helps another community should still get the money for their invention (I’m thinking electric wheel chairs as one example). But you’re right Renca it’s not a solution, just a tool. ❤
My hearing self knows nothing of Hearview but I'll like & comment to boost you in the algorithm.
Short version - computer AI inside a pair of glasses types what it thinks it hears inside a lens on user's glasses.
@ How awful!
Big concern is security risks. I think we should ban wearing glasses with CC and foreign language translating in a sensitive place such as top federal agencies. Products are made in China. SPY. Hackers can read or hear sensitive words. Example: TikTok. We are worried.
Yes, it is true. We should need more development how we can. We are deaf own ecosystem.
I have researched that the hearview contact address is in 891-I Rockville Pike #131, Rockville,MD and google map shows us it is ups store weird….
Me Deaf family for generations and exploitation has been for since my great grandfather was when he entered hearing world as a deaf adult from hearing father who was a physician. Sad story for generations even with toys like one you are talking about.
Thank information 👌
Looks like HearView glasses might be useful for the HoH, in some situations. But if Deaf content creators (or HearView) gave some Deaf people the wrong idea, that's a very expensive and sad mistake. One thing we know for sure is that HearView will not "give back" part of their profits from glass sales, or help in any way with larger problems, such as language deprivation or access to sign language interpreters. “Freebies" for a select few is all you can expect from for-profit industry. To fix bigger problems, the Deaf and HoH population has to unite, organize, and fight for change along with allies like the labor movement. Like during the Disability Rights movement of the 1980s. Tough times ahead.
Money talk. Good conclusion.
Lovely for a short demo (I'm hearing) but what if user wears real glasses to see (I do) or AI vocab isn't strong enough (autocorrect anyone?) or the sound has too many layers to focus? Tool - not solution. Thanks for input, Renca - hearies & salespeople think it's all the rage if there's no real world (Deaf) feedback.
Definitely 💯
Yes your right

Thanks. Am angry with hearing people too.
Yes, another Alexander Graham Bell version 2.0
That's true
No interpreter at doctor's office? File complaint to the Mayor on vary states? Not easy!
Thank You For Sharing
I really appreciate if Deaf people like me to stop and realize we're so blessed to have everything that 3rd world didn't have what we have.. unfortunately so many American Deaf people aren't happy with almost everything.. not happy with our jobs , not happy with we got free stuffs like TTY, VP, Sorenson, Purple, Zvrs, interpreters, VR..etc always look for something to blame and file for lawsuits and want free money..wow it's sad !
Fair, sorta... hearie here, and with so many minority groups clamoring for acceptance and a boost, I want to say (to them) "wait your turn!" The impact of being deaf is truly as horrible as being a wheelchair person in a town of no ramps & narrow doors. Americans have it better than most, but not nearly good enough.
Facts
Well said 👍🤟....but I wouldn't buy it
Me, too!

Definitely true
I did watch on Facebook deafs talking about the hearview glasses . 👓 I. I never buy it .
I haven't done my research on it but I'm not planning on buy it anyway it not really my thing
Hear view is one way communication not two way!!
Hearview targeted the signing deaf. The deaf people that don't sign would have been a more profitable target.
I'm a REAL disability of Cerebral Palsy in a wheelchair and I mean hearing loss as I was 13 yr old then I became deafness. Who created the 'Hearview' then what I want to need to know. about 'Hearview'. I researched and studied the 'Hearview' reviews on RUclips. Who (deaf/HOH/hearing) can afford it or not the Hearview to depend the prices variety. However about Hearview with closed caption as doesn't be perfect to who would like speak to deaf/HOH person as any language as sometimes confusing. Then Hearview was broken and lost somewhere. It's not worth it up to $2000 for what. I rather have an interpreter for any appointments, a smartphone on AVA, Closed Caption on TV shows. I do care deaf/HOH/Disabilities people in the community.
I agreed with you 500 percent…… I will not buy that!
Algorithm ❤
