Code is no problem. And, it's not a wall. It's replacing center support for the area. Also, he did mention the factor of "weight". Load bearing is just that: when removing vertical support, it has to be replaced with horizontal support. To begin with, the work necessary depends on the existing construction/structure, in regard to the planned finish job/design.
