He does let go of his connection to Katara and opens the chakra, but that is to control the avatar state (when the avatar just flashes in and out of the state real fast). His chakra was closed as he was opening it via the bolt of lightening from Azula, which is why he cannot go into the avatar state at all for much of season 3, not until the chakra is opened again when he hits his back on a rock exactly where the lightening hit while fighting ozai. From then on he has control of the avatar state thus why he stopped himself from killing ozai and how he just flashed the avatar state to waterbend enough water to put the fires out the fire benders made during sozins comet
In the the episode "Appa's lost days" we actually get see how strong appa's connection is with Aang. I think if he let appa go as well when he was letting ago of katara cause appa is all he has left after ALL his people were whipped out by Fire lord Azulon. Appa was other connection he had to let go

I think Guru Patik wanted Aang to let go of Katara because of Kyoshi. My theory. If guru Patik is Lao Ge ( the description is suspiciously corresponding ), then he could try to kill Ozai with Aang's arms and to do what he couldn't convince/teach Kyoshi to do. As the only thing that grounded Kyoshi, kept her step from achieving Guru Shoken's ideals, and made her feel guilt was Rangi. So, Guru Patik wanted to create avatar assasin to stop the war and also to make a "perfect" avatar detached from every single earthy concern and weakness.

When Aang is on the lion turtle he asks her for guidance because as an air nomad she would understand how his cultural heritage conflicts with what he has to do to Ozai. She talks about how he cannot let go of his earthly tether and cannot aspire to the same freedom that other air nomads had because he is the avatar and has duties that prevent this and require him to sacrifice his own spiritual needs.
nah he was definitely apologizing because he was letting go of his affection for her… hence the exact repeat of him attaining “nirvana” almost to completion before Azula strikes him down. the scene follows exactly as the Guru taught him, and Aang was attempting to do just that. i feel them forgetting about Appa was a small setback or continuity error from the show’s standpoint… either that, or Aang would’ve likely failed to control the avatar state properly due to his earthly tether (Appa) either way it seems that by the end of the show, Aang has mastered the avatar state without having to let go, effectively meaning the Guru was wrong about what the avatar state required.

@@Bruckleno, airbenders can either let go of their earthly tether, or just bend the air below them, which is too exhausting to do all the time, and just straight up doesn’t work well
