Man, I completely forgot to mention how the King Lums in this game drive momentum whereas the purple lums in Legends push precision more than speed. Just another reason the Back To Origins levels are missing the juice
I had no clue Rayman Origins had these time trial modes that change how the levels are played. You're right, that kind of design philosophy isn't around much. I can think of Crash Bandicoot & Sonic as other examples. Except Crash doesn't go into as much depth, and the classic sonic games almost hide that aspect of their design. The way you're describing it in your vid tells me Rayman is doing it the best. I'm really excited to try it myself! Brilliant stuff man
With Legends being designed around the WiiU and slowing down gameplay with Murphy, it fundamentally makes the gameplay worse compared to Origins imo. I find it hard to imagine the Rayman developers wanted to take that direction with Legends and I assume it must of been pushed by higher ups within UbiSoft. The thing that helped me understand how so many look past this quite obvious flaw, was playing co-op with someone with less gaming experience, they very much struggled with the fast pace of Origins but found Legends more accessible with it's slower pace. Both great games but Origins takes the cake. Loved both your latest videos, especially them coming out whilst I've been on a big Rayman kick!
One other game that used this mechanic and used it quite perfectly (although I can totally see some players rushing the game and not finding these levels) is Sonic Generation (3DS) . There are 100 extra levels, using the original stages yet modifying them, making them entirely different. There was also time trials, when you would only focus on finishing as fast as possible, instead of looking for a balance between rings, enemies, items and time for a greater score. For 100% the game, I directly remembered when you explained Rayman Origins' Time Trials!
Can't put into words how much I love seeing content about Rayman in 2024 - to me, he is the quintessential "hero of my childhood" and played each game until I knew everything there is to know from normal gameplay perspective (minus obviously the insane speedrun glitches and other secrets/difficult to achieve tricks) Its a shame that he and the IP was mishandled to such an extreme extent, but glad to still know that fans of Rayman are still active nowadays and we get gems like this video, well done and thank you!
Going for the lum medal in a level and going for the speed trophy basically turns each level into a new level. I love it origins is literally the best game ever.
If we get a third modern game, i hope they take more from Origins. A tighter design to every level, without the Murphy levels breaking it up, without so many crummy small challenges, without the extremely guided and easy lum/teensie counts. 😊
I went to GameStop when Origins came out and it wasn’t out on the shelf anywhere so I asked if they had it and they did but the fact that it wasn’t displayed always made me sad.
I recently 100%'d every save of Rayman Origins in my Xbox One, everytime i'd start a new save i would always Discover a hidden trick to always get the Lums and Electoons required while still having a lot of momentum, it was super fun and also very nostalgic.
Rayman origins was probably most fun platformer I played and I really loved how everything flows, from animations, music to gameplay. I am now very happy to see pointed out design philosophy of this masterpiece so I can finally fully understand why it works so well. I have yet to play Rayman Legends, but I am looking forward to it.
The only problem with this game I dislike is the movement, now don't get me wrong but idk in ledgends the movement is so fluid I can hit combos, heck I speedran the 2nd level I'm the 1st world in under 3 mins, but when I do the same thing in origins, it just doesn't work, I can pin point the exact thing but ye
I think it's probably because in origins you can punch while standing or running, but not when walking, which is something they added in legends. this also applied to mid air punches, which would slow your momentum when you're running
CRIMINAL. That's what this is. CRIMINAL. I thought I made good content at 500 subs, and people showered me then, but you deserve it WAY, WAY more. There is NO WAY you've just showed up with some copium about a new Rayman and then dropped THIS. WOW. The quality is astounding for someone of your size, especially with the mixing. If you wanna collab hmu lol, i got some ideas
Agreed with a lot of what you're saying here, truly some of the best 2D level design of that generation. If you haven't played Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze yet I'd recommend them because their time trial modes are able to achieve a similar flow
I think that Rayman Legends has 2 problems: 1. A lack of time trials 2. Murphy’s levels being slow-paced Almost all levels containing Murphy are slow, except for I’ve Got a Filling and Hell Breaks Loose. These levels integrate Murphy as if he’s part of your toolbox, not just a gimmick for the sake of having a Wii-U touch-screen-related mechanic. I’ve Got a Filling is a bit slow but really smooth level, and Hell Breaks Loose is a chase level. These levels utilise Murphy without slowing the game down, making him another part of your moveset. If Rayman Myths does become a thing, either they don’t include Murphy or make his levels very smooth and have a nice, fast pace
Legends is Overrated compare to Origins, the level design doesn't know what it wants to be at times, and the murphy levels are miserable, like.. i know the was originally meant to be Wii U exclusive, but these levels, no matter on what system your playing, their soo BORING, the only times i actually enjoy using this mechanic was in the 10 000 Lums Under the sea world (and that's because this world is just perfect in every aspect), because of how this mechanic was slowing the pace of the game, they had to make Original Time Trial levels.
oh hey i actually finished 100%ing rayman origins recently. IDK what you're talking about with it being hard to focus on exploring though. you dont unlock the time trial until you've already beaten a level, so it's pretty easy to just search for all the electrons and get all the lums you need on the first time
Oh I know you don’t get the time trials until you beat the level. What I mean is that the levels are designed to heavily around being sped through that the level encourages you not to explore. I agree it’s still easy to stop and search, but if that’s not your goal then it’s incredibly easy to miss everything

I definitely recommend it! Especially if that’s something that appeals to you in Sonic
From a random person on the internet, wish you a lot of fun on Rayman Origins whenever you may get to it!
I LOVE THE TIME TRIALS!

That makes a lot of sense. Newer gamers are gonna find Legends much easier to get into!
Thanks, glad to see they’ve come at a good time for you! 😄
Rayman Legends is way better on PS4/XB1.

Speed trials remind me of Super Meat Boy levels. They are also designed for perfect timing platforming.
I went to GameStop when Origins came out and it wasn’t out on the shelf anywhere so I asked if they had it and they did but the fact that it wasn’t displayed always made me sad.
That’s sad. I wonder why Legends got to much more mainstream attention than Origins. Both should have been as big as each other
Lovely video! I'll give the game another playthrough thanks to this - I always wondered about why it felt like it "flowed" so well :)

air punch loses all your speed, you can’t buffer kicks when landing, no yby ups and more generally just slower gameplay

I was actually debating which to get origins or legends as a first rayman. I think I’m gonna go origins, I also like the art style better

Legends made one fatal mistake...
It didn't include the hidden Origins level.
YEAH!
YEAH!
*Pam-pa-daaam-da-daa-da-da-DA*
my short answer to this is: yes~ i find origins much more coherent and fun than the critically acclaimed legends :)
The reason why I need ps3 to play it because IT WAS BEST GAME IN THE SERIES!!!

Such a stupid idea to include Origins in Legends... Ubisoft should sell both games
They do tho
I like the artstyle or rayman Origins more than Legends...
But the moskito levels are just not for me😅
