 The broad economic importance of fungi exists in the medical industry for curing diseases in humans and animals.
 Ephedrine is a drug used to cure diseases like asthma and nasal troubles and formerly it was obtained from Epherda sp. Now it is procured from Yeast by benzaldehyde treatment.
 Ergot (alkaloids) is obtained from Calviceps purpurea that grows on wheat and rye. It is used as a drug in inducing uterine contraction and controls haemorrhage during delayed child birth. A derivative of ergot called as lysergic acid (LSD) is used in experimental psychiatry. Ergotamine (Ergomar) is used in the treatment and prevention of migraine.
 The giant puff ball Calvatia eating prevents stomach tumours.
 Vitamin B complex and riboflavin and Vitamin D is obtained from Yeasts, Penicillium and Aspergillus.
 The first antibiotic produced was Penicillin (wonder drug) obtained from fungus Penicillium notatum by Sir Alexander Fleming (1923).
