I have a 1958 Velocette LE that having been left fully working for 8 weeks, steadfastly refused to start . New petrol, plugs, condenser, even did the 'Cortina points' conversion, compression, valve timing, fat spark all checked even 'wet primed' via the spark plug holes but no go. When being kicked over by my friend I put my hand over the exhaust, no pulsing was felt, an engine is effectively an air pump. Pushed wire coat hanger up and felt it was blocked, a baffle had collapsed and fallen across the exit hole, okay it's only the size of a 2pence but was blocked. Started 1st kick after pushing it aside. Maybe pull the HT leads, crank it over with hand over the exhaust and see if it builds pressure or can smell petrol.🤔🤞🏁🇬🇧
It's got to be timing. I know you've checked already but check again, make sure the cam timing is right by looking at the cam lobes on number one witht he engine set to tdc, the lobes should be pointing obliqely upwards. Double check the distributor is not 180 degrees out, take it out and flip it 180 degrees, loosen the adjustment bolt and turn the distributor while cranking to get it ball park right.
Hi Great content as usual. You have most likely checked this, if you have fuel, spark and air. It's probably timing, it may all line up, but it could be 360 degree out. Just my two penneth worth of input, probably not worth that. Good luck. Steve.
I had an Volvo Amazon what I put a B20 and gearbox from a 240, worked well upgraded withelectronic high power ignition and Weber carburetor, I could bottom the speedometer on it.
I first went to Tim (to subscribe and to watch his short updates) and after that I went to you to see what’s going on. I’m happy that you have enough work to do. See you next time. Cheers - Martin 💥👍💥
Regarding the Volvo, I had exactly the same symptoms years ago with a Austin 1300 after I replaced the starter motor. Turned out the shop had sold me a starter motor for a Triumph 1300 which looked identical to the original starter motor. My Austin wouldn't start because the Triumph starter was turning the engine over backwards.
My thoughts on Monica is that I suspect a fueling issue with the carburettor. Perhaps clogged jets or sticking float so that the engine is flooded and therefore the air/fuel mixture is out. A carb service kit or replacement carb might be prudent. All the best!
I wish we had someone like you in Wakefield! Really struggling to get someone to do some welding and bumper on a Mondeo. Regarding the Volvo, my guess at the moment is that it is over-fuelling and quenching the spark. Maybe try cranking it without the actively pumped fuel and squirt it with starter and a small amount of petrol. If nothing else than to get it igniting and verifying the timing.
Hi guys I know you have tried almost everything but working on these for 20 years I did come across one with a sheared camshaft sprocket pin hence the cam timing was out worth a check
Hi good video, Tim is lucky to have you guys and the Hubnuts to help him build his channel, Im currently uploading a lot and it’s extremely slow for me 😫 hope you get the Volvo sorted soon 🙂👍
Sounds crazy but I'd happily buy key-rings if they were on aluminium. Had wooden style before and they don't survive me sitting on them .Re: Monica- is the fuel mixture correct? I've had that problem before on cars with carbs. You seem to have checked everything else, good spark, timing correct, good compression, good fuel pressure, only thing left that i can think of is that its flooding.
No vid on the BBQ? LOL.....deffo fuel supply me thinks, air and flow etc.... anyways very interested in merch when up and running I`m off to tinker with my Jimny safty! everytime i watch you guys it spurs me on to a bit of maintenance, health and happyness to you both! cheers!
Daft question I know, but have you tried baselining the carb? If the settings are out you'll be getting the wrong afr. An afr gauge would be handy for this.
Hi guys regarding the volvo have you been through the breather system on it ? been in the trade 30 yrs as a mechanic / auto electrician and although never had much too do with volvo's you'd be surprised the amount of vehicles i've dealt with as none starters due to breather issues
Could the engine timing on the Volvo be out by 360 degrees? A four stroke engine needs two complete crank rotations (720 degrees) per four stroke cycle. If you're a whole 360 degrees out you'll be a bit like Eric Morecombe on the piano, playing all the right notes but not in the right order.
This may sound like a daft question after all you have checked but is it getting air?The only other thing I assume you have checked is the cam timing itself? If its got fuel, correct spark timing, petrol and compression and valve timing?????Is it overfuelling ?
drain the carb as that could be instantly flooding engine blow inside manifold could be lake of petrol dont fuel the carb take plugs out dry them with blow lamp refit plugs leave carb disconnected plug fuel line not to get fuel every where crank engine spray brake clean panel wipe or even a bit of propane into carb you should get it fireing of sorts if not i would say timing / firing order issue i feel like comming up there to check myself its going to be something stupid check rotation of dizzy rotor arm some goes the wrong way and sends you down a rabbit hole
As I recall when my father had a Volvo like yours many years ago, if it has an electric fuel pump the fuel pump relay is a highly likely suspect as it plagued my fathers Volvo something rotten. Also the 25-amp fuse holder clipped to the inside left fender. Clean up or replace that 25-amp fuse and try it as this was another cause of head scratching back in the day.
Could the exhaust be plugged up? Rats nest or similar. Some carburated redblocks can shutdown instantly by holding your hand over the exhaust pipe.

I feel a Basil Fawlty moment coming on with Monica 😂👍
We're being incredibly reserved in the workshop 😂
That twig used is now in the British Museum.

ECU misinterpreting the crank or cam sensor signal possibly? That would drive me insane! I wouldn't be able to go home until I'd figured it out😂
Subbed to Cambrian, Hope you get to the bottom of the OVLOV not starting

Tim reckons it has to be the carb. It was a frustrating day, albeit one with a delicious BBQ!
The carb is coming off and Tim is going to give it an inspection... We have been through everything many many times.... So frustrating!
You have been able to do a lot.
Drinking from my Whiteland restorations mug while watching.👍
Hopefully the kettle was easier to start that Monica 😂
Does that carb shut off valve have 12 volts? We had a rotten wire and Volvo died...

When you remove the plugs are they wet with fuel?
240 key ring....mmmmmmmm!

What about compression ?
car cut outs will be great :)
Is it B20 or B21 motor?
Is Monica’s carb been cleaned etc. could the jets be blocked!

When did the Volvo of yours last start ?..
Check cam timing on volvo
I've got my fingers crossed for a heatwave on the weekend I take the caddy camping 🤞😂
Don't forget your anorak 😂
@@WhitelandRestorations can I borrow one of the shop heaters? 😂
You'll have to put a really long extension on that one 😂
😂😂😂
And a tailgate.
Just throw a Honda v tec in it..😂
Lewis is getting very close to ripping the thing out!
Surely the 5 cylinder from the 850 would be more appropriate

Yes, I think it sounds like it. Fuel pump relay.
