did your ancestors passed over something about Mt Shasta to you ? I mean... the spiritual significance of that place. Maybe something that we cannot easily find on the internet.
I'm a descendent of captain jack and that fighting spirit still runs through my family and my P.E teacher credits me being from a family of strategists
I stand in solidarity with The Modoc Tribe. These brave warriors stood strong against an unstoppable force. I'm proud to have been able to visit Captain Jack's Last Stand, and to have paid my respects at the medicine flag.
I literally live on a Mnt overlooking Infernal cavern's..the site of the last fight between natives and the USA cavalry.about 60 miles south of the lava beds
The u.s. forces were criminals carrrying out the will of a greedy bunch, they were the invaders and theives. Im ashamed of the way my ancestors related with the indiginous intelligent peoples of this land. Forcing them onto reservations in there own land, what a crime and injustice. RiP capt jack!
What goes around comes around. This nation is in for a rude awakening and does not need to worry because it will be too late. Now it is our turn to be exterminated and the elite knows it and has plush underground cities to run and hide to. Money will no longer matter soon. Our enemies are very powerful and cunning. Our pride and arrogance will be our downfall.
Such a fantastic park, everyone should go there at least once! So many hours can be spent wandering through some beautiful, eerie landscape. I only wish the natives could still use their land, maybe work out a deal with the park systems like tribes in New Mexico and Utah have.
I worked there and the natives didn't really inhabit the Monument. They lived further north near Tulelake and Merrill. They were pushed back to a more defensible position at the Stronghold. Unfortunately most of the monument was disregarded by the natives with the exception of petroglyph point.
@Penny Pincher Ian i'm afraid that is the most wrong you can get. the entire area that the monument encompasses is almost entirely covered with archaeological sites. the southern shoreline of Tule Lake was the site of one of the largest year-round Modoc villages in the Klamath Basin. the area to the south of the lake was considered very sacred and also served as their primary hunting grounds. if you had worked here, you would know all of this.
I've been there. The Modoc we're brilliant Warriors. It's a shame he was betrayed by members of his own tribe who helped track him down after he killed Canby, otherwise they would never have found him.
Seems kind of important but it really doesn’t belong in this little snippet, it was 4 mins, they didn’t look on the whites positively in this vid. Hopefully more people will dig in and learn the context to all this and how messed up this stuff really was.
Somewhere in Southern Oregon is a direct descendant of ScarFace Charlie. He's about 6'9" tall and looks like he just stepped out of a time machine from the 1850s. His name starts with an F and i met him in Port Orford in late 2015 but lost contact info. 🎄 🎄 🎄 C & J From #5 Aborli hwy 101
No one is pleased with the Indian Wars. This incident shows that problems arose on both sides. Very complicated and a easy target for simplification from the distance of time. The narrator seemed to remove Captain Jack's agency as though he could no nothing about his own actions. That rings false when you consider everything else we know about him.
It's appalling to call a conflict between a small group of people trying to defend their land from an overwhelmingly numerous and aggressive land grabbing invader a "war between"... Shame on you, Smithsonian, for not recognising the falsity of such language.

I'm honored to be apart of the Modoc Tribe

Amazing warriors these people are. Just beautiful. Captain Jack was an amazing military genius.
How can you forget that the government-after the hanging-decapitated Captain Jack and sent his head to a museum for Indian skulls?
