Sorry for your loss Mike. The way things are today, he may even be happier. It's not the same world that we grew up in. Sometimes I think I've lived too long. I'm not ready to give up either. I haven't gotten my 51 EL going yet cause its cold here on the east coast. Hope you're doing well.

Sure. A boatload of stuff. Wiring shot. Generator not working. Ignition coil operating one side only. Condenser faulty. Carburetor crusted up so badly, it took several cleanings. Petcock plugged. Intake manifold leaking badly. Valves in bad need of adjustment. No timing marks on left flywheel. It's been a real pain. But suddenly, it's all worth it.

@@pacificmike9501 Mike I m in ireland and grew up seeing older dudes with custom harleys, what I remember is one particular bike a shovel and I don't want to describe it cause they will be watching You too. But this man who owned the shovel head had such a influence on me and my dream bike would be a shovel excaltly the same as his to this day, includeing same frame, tank and paint. the bike, the sound of the motor, the special paint with the flames. And also the interaction I had with this man. I remember him telling me how Harley Davidson were the Rolls Royce of Motor Bikes when I was 9 or 10. Don't know if this makes sence but it was part cool bike and bigger part cool dude. To this day that man is a hero to me. He was just the dude. And he was the dude that toke the time to talk to a child and that child was me. So when I watch You building L C and the other bikes it's enjoyable, very much, hope that makes sence Pacific Mike. Hi Mike!
This comming winter its time , to take the old engine apart, its a Knuckle 1947, but at the time I bought the Engine and other parts 1979 in the outskerts of New Orelans, there where no Knuckle cylinders to find at that time, so my engine has Pannhead cylinders, with rebuild heads to fit the the bolts for a pannhead, a job done by some really good American guy , so the push rod covers had to be slightly extended, but it all works good since then, but this time all my old Harley mecanics have since long time passed away, and there are not too many left to renovate an old knuckle, so I have desided to do it my self, with help from your videos and help from a Swedish guy who runs the Sportsterspecialist, he is also to old to manage a renovation, but he agree to that I could use him as an consultant.
If it takes a year to do the job, it doesnt matter, I will keep records, photos, etc during the whole process, Im really looking forward to it.
I will need some help as well, due to I dont have and pressing tools, etc.
Thanks again for a really good channel/program, the best I would say!!!

True. It's a bit odd. But, everything they did was quite good. Most mechanics didn't take the time to learn them. It's a great bike. The rear chain enclosure would make that chain last nearly forever. But, people destroyed them rather than read the manual. Very comfortable ride. Enjoy!

Yea Jeff. I have a 78.5 Superglide I bought new. Theres a lot of mid year changes. I wouldnt call it a bastard though. Its been a great bike and a loyal friend for 44 years.
It was recently trapped in a shop during hurricane Ida.
And under 7 feet of water.
Ive been slowly getting reacquainted with every single piece of her.

@@miker7798 Mike I don't mean that in bad way. From what I understand from some old school Harley mechanics I know there are first year parts on this bike. Like rear shock set up is different than a FLH. The starter and solenoid on the FLT is different. The sad thing is this was a running/ riding bike when my buddy bought it. He tok it to his brother inlaw for him to paint tins and bags( the original twin headlight fairing was gone went my buddy bought the bike) 2 years later we go get the bike from brother inlaw. Unknown to my buddy bike is mostly stripped down to frame motor and Trans, front and back wheel and bare handle bars. No wiring harness, parts and pieces missing. That's why I call it a bastard because finding parts I need to get it back to where you could at least rig it has been a problem.

@@jeffnewman4966 No I didnt take it in a bad way.
There were upgrades mid year. The pointless ignition for one. That some old school guys hated the idea of. So much so that they pulled them and put points. Mine ran fine for almost 15 years without issue. Other than an occasional air gap adjustment.
The Showa forks I think were short timers. I lowered the rear with shorter shocks. But when I went to lower the forks there was zero aftermarket.
Of course at the time there was the AMF issue. On my bike the evidence is a crappy inner primary cover. Rough casting. Some ugly casting marks. And porosity.
The Kiehin carbs could be modified to perform. But were sluggish off the showroom floor. Most were replaced immediately.
S&S, Mikuni, SU.... Ive been running a Zenith Bendix since the 90s.
Anything anyone says negative about those years is mostly bullshit and superstition.
A popular one is that the carb falls off. Thats because everyone took the giant toaster oven air filter and threw it in the trash. But HD had changed the intake manifold gaskets from O ring to rubber bands. Requiring a bracket.
Theres still availability of the original manual and the old Easy Rider tips and tricks 1 and 2 have some good info. Still available.
Every mechanic who ever touched my shovel fucked it up. Starting with the dealer. So I learned.
Theres a few old school guys around. The Harley dealer now? Youd be as likely to get help from a Honda dealer as them.
There might be a few parts available... but I always try to support small local shops.
Pretty easy bike to work on. Im going to need to wire mine too. Tge guy whos shop flooded was putting a headlight bucket in for me. As usual he fucked it all to hell. I may just go minimalist. But I think theres a guy out there doing complete harnesses.
      Good luck.

@@miker7798 it has a S&S on it. I took it a guy I know 70 years old still works on Harleys out of his home. He got the bike running. Motor sounds a little smoke out of rear cylinder. Someone put shorter shocks on the rear. It still had factory Electronic Ignition but he couldn't get fire out it,put points setup in to get it running. It's definitely going to be a work in progress.
