I haven't done this myself but I suspect what happened was they abducted "Captain" creatures from an Empire. You need Spore Galactic Adventures and you have to find a space empire that has been made with weapon parts from the Captain editor, then abduct some citizens. Normal "Space Empire" creatures made in the Empire outfitter won't work, it has to be a Captain, but not all Captain creatures will work as some won't have the right weapons added. If in doubt, look in the Sporepedia and look for Captain creatures in your game, if they've got pulse blast as one of their four attacks, they are the right ones.
