- Welcome to my MCC Legendary Speedrun Guides! Today we're tackling Silent Cartographer from Halo 1 (Combat Evolved Anniversary).
My goal with this series is to help everyone complete every Halo game on Legendary difficulty using the latest speedrunning tips and tricks. If you have any questions or I forgot to explain something in the video, please ask in the comments and I'll do my best to answer!

I hate how speed runners never explain the door launch in more detail. I get that about 1 in every 50 tries

+Mike Johnson just swing the warthog round and its ass should launch you through the door
Mike Johnson Just drive straight through the door. It will get stuck about half way through, then you just get out and kill the elite. Only catch is that it'll probably get completely stuck, so you can't use it at the end. I just kill the camo elites with the pistol as a head shot is enough. It might not be efficient foor speedruns, but if you're just trying to complete the level on legendary, it works just fine

Running this in 2019 and can confirm all of these tricks still work. I don’t think they bother patching campaign glitches but I was able to get the checkpoint right before the door, was able to eject through the door, and finished with a time of 7:18

Guys, instead of launching yourself through the door, try gunning for the door right away so you can lodge yourself and the warthog in the doorway, and most of the time, it'll work and you can just get out. Soemtimes you'll get stuck in the door and die, but the success rate is higher than this.

The warthog is disproportional when compared to the size of the door, even the front of it. Everytime I tried it the warthog would only go in 1-2 inches, which left me unsuccessful.
I followed your advice and just went for the door: got over half of my warthog through on my 4th try.

Can confirm that all of these tricks still work perfectly in 2020, just takes practice. Did it just the other day in 5:33 and each one of these works exactly as he showed. Great guide as always
I'm not getting a checkpoint before the door, and I've been following your guide to the letter.
David Dushane 343 did a ton of patching recently they made doing this kind of stuff a lot harder

Set a PB of 5:22. I got so lucky. I was having the hardest time with the warthog launch and first drop. But then just now I swear I did em all perfect. Except for the nade jump to camo. I threw too many plasmas and launched the plasma pistols off the ledge. So once I got camo I had to do the next nade jump and then run the platform till I assassinated a jacket for their pistol. Then I was home free. Thanks Eli. Amazing videos
That took me 1 fucking hour long to just get through the door!!!
For the door just make sure to make a 45 degree able and MAKE SURE TO JUMP
+TheEvilPanda i think there is another way of getting past that bit by passing through the window rather than teh door, but idk if it's easier or not
+TheEvilPanda the door part is complete bullshit. i have been going for three hours and the only time i got through the warthog glitched through the wall, blew up, and killed me.

I did it once, a long time ago... Accidentally with a bunch of marines on the warhog. Lol

speed runs are something ive never really watched or taken an interest to.. after seeing this man my opinion has changed. incredible. just tried it myself (with the exception of the main grenade jump) bagged myself a time of 7.48 and a nice achievement. hope to see more guides eli! :)

Took me about 15 minutes but I've finally gotten through the door a few times but die on that first fall. Such a cool speed run, thanks for posting this!
so for those having issues with the grenade jump against the pillar on the way back up behind is another pillar with a lip about at head height, do grenade jump there then to the immediate right is the platform, takes literally about 3 seconds longer
Note to self: 40% of these tricks are impossible on legendary.

They really aren't, the warthog slide is probably the hardest part but if you can turn well enough and know when to slow down and speed up you will do just fine
When i went through to door it glitched me through the floor all the way down to the slant you drop on, completely skipped that whole part and no enemies spawned until i was in the invis rom. The hunters didnt spawn either.
I've spent over an hour trying to get past the door with the warthog and it still isn't working >.>
I just started speed running halo a couple of days finally mastered everything for this level thanks to your awesome walkthroughs :) really appreciate it keep up the great work!

I once got the warthog stuck in the door that locks and when i got out i was on the other side, i never thought of bailing out and sliding in like a badass. I always just try ramming it straight in there.
lol I just did this today and it glitched like no other and I couldn't move it. The other marine was in the passenger seat and when it went into a cut scene, the marine was smashed to death haha
If you jump into the pelican early, you can mash the a-button to make the level end nearly instantly

But I found easier going through the door instead of launch myself. The only problem is in the final part, you have to push the warthog with granades because it gets stuck.
You can't do the warthog fling above like 30 fps on pc btw. Just FYI if you are playing on PC use a frame limiter. I set mine to 20 fps.
The part where ur invisible and have to gernade jump is about impossible if u dont have full health

Something that doesn't help with speedrunning, but is cool to know, is that the warthog can get through the ravine early in the level, before the two hunters, at a very specific angle and enough speed. Also, I once tried to drive it through the closing door and ended up with it vibrating madly, stuck in the door, and killing me repeatedly, as an autosave had occurred.
You don't have to do the 2nd grenade jump you can climb the pillar thing behind it

Trying to do the warthog jump inside the closing door, it passed inside the ground and I arrived immediatly on the below floor on the dead marines...

After failing to do the launch a few times, I got bored and just drove the warthog straight into the doorway, unexepectedly, the front half of the warthog made it through before the door closed, allowing me to get out on the other side. Is this a reliable strategy or did I just get extremely lucky?
Idk probally the lucky side but idk
fristi61 I succeeded to get the warthog halfway through the door 3 more times after that over about 10 attempts. Of those 3 times, one time I got stuck with a plasma and died just as I drove through. The second time I glitched through the geometry and got pushed back out of the hallway when I exited the vehicle. The 3rd time it all worked fine.
The downside is that you'll not splatter as many enemies in that room this way, which you will have to face again later. Also, that warthog is stuck there, you can get in and out of the driver seat to get back to the other side, but you won't be able to use it to drive to the pelican.
So all in all this method (in my experience) requires less practice but is a little slower and exposes you to a bit more combat at the end of the mission. If you can't seem to figure out the launch it's a viable alternative though.

Nak3d Eli So i did everything correct except pickup the camouflage and i got all the way to the end and the door wouldn't open..what must i do, restart?
So i did everything in this video but at the end when you drive out the pelican doesnt come. Earlier in the mission cortana said "lets go find that map" and the objective is find the map room. Not evac on the pelican what the hell did i do wrong?

Took me more time to get passed that door with the hog than to do the whole level as intended on legendary...
Can someone help, the door does not reset for me once I get passed the gold elite and now I am unable to advance.

I can't even get it to checkpoint going down the ramp at the start. Doesn't matter if I get it on the ledge, it never checkpoints :(

The thing that ruins this as a viable method is that invisibility. Even if you're a second off there is NO getting past that last area unless you kill all the enemies.
can someone explain to me why whenever I do that warthog glitch and do exactly what he says, I come back to the door and it's closed. I did everything he said to do, but when I come back to the door, the elite I killed isn't there and the door is closed. Why??

So far these runs have been no deaths, what are you going to do when you get to the level Gravemind? Are you going to keep the theme of no deaths or just go for completion?
Well deaths are kind of against speedrunning as dying usually kills a run form qualifying from a competitive time. So it's guaranteed that these speedruns are going to be almost exclusively no-death runs.
To anyone doing this in 2022 or later: Here is how I did it (and recommend doing it). I took 6:00 doing this (along with the save/quit method), and it avoids doing the warthog slide trick with the door.
For the majority, you can follow the guide, apart from the timestamps I mention below.
Also to note: Try to maintain blue health until at least the camo pickup, if not longer. It greatly increases your chances of success, as both the seconds following de-camo and the last second sprint for the pelican are very deadly.
0:53 : I didn't throw a grenade at the group of enemies, instead opting to save it. If you take more than shield damage, just restart, but it shouldn't be more than a shot or two taken anyway.
1:20 : When doing these turns, don't try to full speed everything. Once I let off the gas a bit, I became much more consistent in driving it inside.
1:40 : The infamous warthog slide. I recommend not doing this! Instead, do as other commenters have said and drive full speed into the door. If it goes well, you should get the warthog stuck halfway. Get out, back smack, and continue.
2:38 : At this point, I grabbed a plasma pistol and reloaded before touching the camo, and also managed to get a checkpoint beforehand. Once you grab the camo, you want to optimize every move as much as possible.
2:48 : There is the smaller pillar that others have suggested, but I recommend just doing the grenade jump proper. The seconds saved in a good run can make the difference between fighting the last room and barely escaping, and if you get the checkpoint from the last timestamp, not much time is lost anyway.
3:08 : If you are lucky, you can occasionally get a checkpoint in this room. If you haven't lost any camo time and get a checkpoint here, your life will be made easier.
3:24: My camo dies here, and there were two elites both times I did the level, so a back smack wasn't possible. Instead, I recommend just moving/jumping past them, not throwing any grenades or shooting any of these enemies (The elites seem to respond much slower when you do nothing.) You will likely take a lot of damage, so what you want to do once past the blue elites is to charge your plasma pistol, release on the sword elite, then continue past towards the platform as you headshot him with your magnum.
3:36 : Here, the warthog will be blocking your way. What you'll want to do from here on out will differ from the video, so I've typed it out below.
1: Use your magnum to take out the grunts, shooting on either side of the warthog or crouching on top to do so.
2: Use uncharged plasma shots to take out the elite. Charged ones seem to hit the warthog.
3: Once everyone is dead, get in the warthog and drive as far back as you can (not very far). When you get out, you should be on the other side, so jump the wheel.
4: Pick up as many plasmas and make sure all weapons are loaded. I was lucky to get a checkpoint around here as well, before going up the first hallway.
5: At the top of the hallway, those blue elites should randomly die (don't ask why). You'll want to use the half-wall just past them for protection, and you're going to use all but 2 of the plasmas available to help keep the camo elites that storm the room at bay, attempting to stick them or just throwing the grenade in the middle of the room. Your goal is to hold here until the Pelican can land, so space grenades out a bit. And, while stopping so many camo elites seems difficult, it is leagues easier than driving a warthog.
6: After you get down to 1 or 2 plasmas, and you've held them off as long as possible, you're going to make a break for it. Start heading towards the pelican, and launch one plasma on each side of the room as you go, hopefully preventing the elites from blocking your path/killing you. The ship should be ready, so get in and you're done!

Once you do those 2 big falls and go into that room (the map room), you need to activate the panel. It will trigger a cut scene if you don't do that weird jump he did. If you don't activate the panel then the door stays closed.
I don't know if I found a new glitch or not because I'm not up to date with the glitches for this game. Anyway I was practising my warthog door skip when on one of my tries I got pushed beneath the map and fell on the floor below.

3:23 is where my camo stopped working... yeah, that was a bitch to get through, especially since I only had 2 health bars left.
The warthog truck wasn’t that difficult (got it after 5ish minutes) it was the pillar jump that got me so I just did the jump behind that pillar. If you’re just looking to complete the mission quick then it’s viable as all you have to do is just fight the last room where he back smacked the elite
There is like 30 elites on the way down to the door, never even made it down there once
Also the door was closed to get out but i glitched through it by getting in the warthog
I could never do the launch but I managed to glitch the warthog through that damn door. It's a lot easier. Just drive that shit right on through lol.

okay so i got through the door and speed ran but my camo wore off.. fk it. but now im back at the door and it WONT OPEN! no elite comes out.

The tricks are easy. I can get to the camouflage in under 3 minutes, but
I can't continue after that. I get shoot every time, I either get shoot
too much before the grenade jump i.e. kill myself with grenade. Or I
reach the top of the jump and get gunned down by the grunts and elite. I
made it to the hunters once because I decided to kill the enemies
instead, but the hunters just gunned me down while walking up the
stairs.
How much is your graphics
I just noticed if you take too much damage at the beginning or when you kill those two elites you can't get through past the grenade jump... Rip me

Driving the warthog straight thru the door and getting it lodged is easier than the slide & jump in my opinion. Be fucked if I can master the 2nd grenade jump though!
God damn warthhog launch, I have -5746 score and about 23 deaths/restating checkpoints. I'll never make this launch and will have to fight everything raging

What settings would y'all recommend for par score achievements?
Heroic difficulty, some score multiplying skulls that don't make you suffer multiple consequences with each mission, kill lots of enemies but also try to go a little fast because time affects your score, also, playing with more people decreases your score I think. Lastly, minimize dying. You can loose lots of points by dying excessively so try to keep that to a low factor.
i see. i still havnt gotten around to doing score achievements so i shall do them with the above mentioned settings. thanks
no problem. also, for timing, i would play on easy, there may be some skulls you can put on that may help in some way, but i doubt it

the whole beat the campaign legendary in 3 hours is, despite seeing these speed runs. i just finished keyes in 1:51:13, tried doing the glitch at first and finally did it, but i fell off the map and restarted. also, on two betrayals, it took me 3:26:52, because of that second to last and last area

How you did this in 4 and a half minutes is ridiculous. I can not emulate anything you did in this video in less than 10 attempts. infuriating as hell!
Doing this speedrun was the worst decision ever. The definition of hell. I tried for about 20 minutes until I finally made it through that fucking door. Did the whole level. Took me 1 hour. Did the whole level again. Somehow managed to get through that door within 7 minutes. Took me 18 minutes to get through the whole level. Now I tried for a third time. Playing this level again for 1:30 h now. Did not manage to get through that fucking door again. So all in all I spent 3 hours trying to do that level.
10/10 would kill myself
