There are methods of drawing the nodachi from the hip as well as from the shoulder. They are well documented. The one from the shoulder required another person. There was not one person who remained with just the saya. Both were carrying nodachi and each helped the other person to draw the sword, at the same time. It's difficult to explain in words but not such a big deal.
Those traditional clothes are "Tokubestsu chumon", special order made for ceremonies I think.. For usual Keikogi (training clothes), you can find them inside all budo shop over the world isn't it
The long swords can be drawn from the obi, and there are plenty of different ways of doing it. I have seen people wear the sword off the obi using rope and drawing with the blade down. I have also seen two people wear them on their backs, drawing each-others odachis; It really depends on the school.
@RevKuban - Tanaka sensei is Soke? I was of the impression Masamoto Soke was the current headmaster of the school and that previously it was Kobashi Nichiki? I've studied Enshin Ryu for around 18 months. Once you get past the first half of Shoden, its a little easier on the knees!
sleeves up is for "shinken shobu" (real fight), for demonstration (embu) as we know the kata & excercice, some traditional old school are keeping sleeves down... gasshô
Yes Tanaka Fumon Sensei is soke of this Traditional martial kenjutsu school after Kobayashi Nichikan sensei, as the japanese gouv "certificate" inside this movie shown it. I dont know about Masamoto Sensei, but I know the sword level of Tanaka Fumon sensei & particulary the level of his genius daughter Midori-Ukyo: IT IS EXCEPTIONAL in Japan too... They are performing EMBU (exhibitions) inside Meiji-jingu, Katori, Kashima shrines, etc...Gasshoo
Dear Sir, If a martial art expert as Soke Fumon Tanaka can draw his long sword from "obi", I can see his wonderful skill for using sword, isn't it? By past, probably the long sword was used on battlefield by 2 pepole but the one who kept the scrabbard (saya) how could defend himself?
Over the 2nd minute he is using an odachi! I love the long swords, but I spected than japanese long swords, like nodachis, are drawn from the right shoulder, not from the obi.
To Gordon Hall: in Koden Enshin, they are using al the power of their body, not only the power of left hand... This "zambaito/odachi) is too big to be using as Edo swords fighting method _/\_ To Adroitedtiger: at sengoku period times, anyway sleeves of costume was up. Now to do exhibition (embu) with a long sword (which have a very long "tsuka") using NO UP sleeves is showing us their "master level", don't you think? Sorry for my late answers, but as I am in mountains, I dont come oftently on youtube. _/\_
Dear Sir, in Enshin kenjutsu school, there only 1 kata to do "nuki-uchi" with the left hand. But the sword is always on left hip. By past "hidarikiki" in Japan people using left hand was using sword as usualy. The power of cutting is inside the left hand, the right hand is only to drive it. I eard that some traditional sword schools received teachings for left hand. Gasshoo _/\_
@Einherji81 You are right Ehachijuichi if we follow Hephburn style romanji... As you know ideogramm is the good writting for japanese. Soke Tanaka for example wrote for HEART the romanji SIN than 'shin". To a french, sound EN is same than AN.. For a japanese it should be "è-Neu-shin"... To american ears it could be "A-n-chin".. Your semantic request could be ask with "please". Doumo
:) perhaps... But I would think Saint Michael would use straight sword as "tsurugi" maybe... This kind of big sword (Zambaito/Nhotachi) was during feudal times (before Edo period) to cut horses legs on battlefields on first. It is very slow using. _/\_
"The power of cutting is inside the left hand, the right hand is only to drive it." I don't know what you meant by "drive" with the right hand. That swing was all by the right hand, no power from the left hand. I don't know much about this Enshin Ryu. If the kata was a cut at that point, she most definitely did not cut, merely touch the target.
Sorry Sir, It's privacy but if you go to Japanese Ambassy in your country, they could find the adress for you: Hombu Dojo is at Tennoji quarter of Osaka city.
Enshin style is very old (Muromachi period) & modern Edo new school. Enshin ryu is not "Battodo" but "Suemonogiri": cutting bamboo or straw just standing on plot; NOT "impale", put on sit... There is no "swing" as TOYAMA ryu in Old Traditional kenjutsu schools (Kooryu) _/\_ gasshoo skg
