R.I.P. Ahmad Jamal. July 2, 1930 - April 16, 2023.
Today we lost one of the Best 4/16/23. I had the honor to work for him and his family. Rest in eternal heavenly peace, Sir😢😢😢😢😢
I HAD NEVER HEARD OF AHMAD JAMAL, BUT ABOUT 45 YEARS AGO, I WALKED INTO A STORE THAT WAS PLAYING HIS MUSIC AND I STARTED DANCING RIGHT ON THE SPOT WHERE I WAS STANDING. IT WAS THIS VERY SONG THAT WAS PLAYING. I IMMEDIATELY BOUGHT THE ALBUM AND HAVE BEEN GROVIN' EVER SINCE. HIS MUSIC IS SO WELL KNOWN AND SO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER PIANO PLAYER. ALL OF HIS GROUP ARE SUPERB MUSCIANS. THANK YOU FOR HAVING THIS ON RUclips! MAY AHMAD HAVE MANY MORE BIRTHDAYS SO HE CAN PLAY MORE MUSIC. TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY AND I AM DANCING LIKE IT WAS 45 YEARS AGO! . . .SYLVIA!
YAAHHHH!!!
There is a similarity in all Pittsburgh piano players ie; fatha Hines Errol garner etc
I had the same experience, but with Rossiter Road!
Right on 🎹🥁
@@paulturner6334 Errol Garner , my parents taught me.... ab fab ! And Ahmad also...RIP !
I listen to this evocative piece of jazz perfection almost every day, but today it seems even more poignant than ever. I just learned of the passing of this jazz master, who I had the privilege of seeing perform live at City Hall during the Toronto Jazz Festival of 2007. Rest in peace and power, Mr. Ahmad Jamal.
This one really hurts. Rest in peace, the fabulous Ahmad Jamal.
93 years old he lived a long and blessed life. When i first heard this on a mixed jazz tape i played the hell out of it.
RIP a great jazzman is gone.
R.I.P.- so long maestro xx and thanks for your music
May the angels carry you home dear soul, Thanks for showing up and giving us such great music.
One of those songs that I don’t want to end 😊

My heart hurts because of his loss...I loved his music and his style. Rest in peace, dear man.
Judy here, have listened to jazz, classical, r&b, etc. Since I was twelve listening to my brothers dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Johnny Hartmann, so, so many concerts. When l was about 22 I met Billy eckstein at a small venue. Beautiful grey eyes. I regress. I'm 71 and still groovin. So glad im still loving it all. Thank u for making sure classics are readily available for all. Pass your love of music on....
What a huge loss! 😢
The world will always be greatful and happy to witness what you ever created to our music Ahmad!
Rest in Peace Lord Jamal! 🕊️
RIP and thanks for the sounds…….
I was born 4 decades after this man and just recently discovered his extraordinary music. I'm mesmerized beyond measure. The best jazz arrangements I've ever heard! Where have I been??!!
He is was (is) such a brilliant man, 🎶 lovely person with liters of charisma.
Saw him numerous times and his timing 🎹 was exemplary. 🎶 'Poinciana' in Paris is superbe
Love him ♥
He was without a doubt one of the true artists, may he rest in peace, Ahmad Jamal.
R.I.P Maestro. I listened to your older albums all day long. In fact I do that frequently. But today’s one was special, I have never been able to see you live, how it is great to have your recordings beside me.
hay quá
Rest in Heaven, Ahmad Jamal!
A man who was happy in his work...and it shows. Rest in peace, dear Ahmad.
XXX kiss them all. Soooo good !
R.I.P. Great pianist , will be missed but never forgotten!!! :(
No matter how many times Jamal plays this signature tune, there is always something fresh and different. Badrena's percussion certainly adds another wonderful layer of sound and texture to this particular performance.
100%
Sixty years ago I heard Poinciana at a local Chicago station. Ahmed Jamal played at the Pershing Hotel at 39th and Federal, not far from the high school I attended. I was mesmerized by this song, and have heard it 10,000 times. Notice the interaction of the musicians. This is harmony.
Correction: The Pershing Hotel was on Cottage Grove, not Federal.
Me too. R.I.P., Amad Jamal
I agree. I was in high school when this was a big favorite. R.I.P., Amad Jamal.
You are so lucky Thomas ✨🖤.
R.I.P. - one of my favorites
Bass player knocks me out!! This rec’dg should get Nobel Peace Prize ‼️
yesssss
Absolutely
one of the greatest piano players world wide.. a wonderful touch. RIP Ahmad ..s
After listening to this, SO many times, I have to give the bass player a special applaud. Reginald Veal, you are my hero.
I totally agree
No volume
He leads us to the percussionist. They're awesome.
…I first saw Reginald Veal and Herlin Riley (drums) way back in ‘93 with The Wynton Marsalis Septet. Remarkable how much they have matured musically. What an absolute treat. Chapeau!
My favorite jazz pianist of all times and the rhythm section is so badass!! Bass player is killing it but drummer and percussionist are too. They are so happy! This is just pure joy!
Manolo on percussion washes all my boredom away....at a time in history like this!!!
Such a positive creative force in the music scene. Let your music live on and your legacy be cherished. Rest in peace Ahmad Jamal.
Rest in peace brother and thank you for your art, its a blessing for all of us
Mr. Jamal is the undisputed truth and his sound will always be appreciated by real music lovers. 🎶
The greatest sound a child could ever hear and grow up on. And here it is today.
This is the most relaxing song I ever heard. It has now become my daily routine...
If this music doesn't put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step, check your pulse because you may just be dead. Thank you for the music, Ahmad Jahmal, and Rest In Peace.
Whenever I feel a little bit down and out I listen to this, it has a magic influence, and I understand that life also has its great moments. Thanks för that lifelong lesson, Ahmad Jamal.
Very good recording! Great musicians!
Everywhere, whenever, everyone, out the World...merci!

RIP, Ahmad Jamal. Passed 4/16/2023, age 92.
There are few things I like more than great musicians smiling as they perform. What a lesson in groove!
One of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, Ahmad Jamal, passed away at the age of 92.
RIEP
Will treasure these memories.
This is my go to start my day song, the bass and drum players are in that pocket so tight it's like one person playing three instruments! Its. A beautiful thing.
Today is Ahmad Jamals 90th birthday. All the best for this great musician!

@Frank Steinhardt:
Thank you for reminding us of the birthday of this genius, virtuoso pianist and composer.
Vielen Dank, dass Sie uns an den Geburtstag dieses genialen, virtuosen Pianisten und Komponisten erinnert haben.
When I
was in college in 1961 we’d sit around
In a group & groove out to Ahmad with a few avijazz enthusiasts. He’s 90 & I’m 80....Best of the old folks still at it , my friend. Mikey Weichel
,
Happy Belated Birthday! I'm glad you are still with us!🥰
I saw him last year in a rare appearance at the Kennedy Center in Washington. As marvelous as ever. A genius.
Brought a tear to my eye. 60 years ago we rocked our baby daughter to sleep to this,
J'imagine comme ce doit être émouvant, en effet. 🥲
I first heard this song when I was about 12 yrs old & fell madly in love w/jazz & that moment. Some 62 yrs later & it still sounds good!

Not agree. Think about Miles.
No words can express how this rendition touches deep down inside of me. I can play it dozens of times and it just gets better!
All I can say is rest in peace 😥Great man ❤🎵 🎹
I have the original LP with this track which I listened to in a site hut back in 1964. I still love listening to it as well as the versions on RUclips.
ruhe in Frieden Ahmad...Gott ist mit Dir...wir danken für Dein Werk
After years I have begun to reacquaint myself with jazz... remembering it's beauty to the ears and it's ability to touch one's soul. Thank you to all it's artist... Miles, Coltrane,Mangione,Prysock and more...live on !!!
Makes me cry with such joy that I am alive to hear this
The bass is so on point.
I've been playing music for 53 of my 57 years. Ask a musician to pick a "favorite song." You may get a list a mile long. This piece is on my top 3. It moves me from one space, through many spaces and into another space, better than the first. Transcendent! Sublime!
pray tell, what are the other two!!! this is a great choice.
Rest in peace and rise in glory. Great jazz piano playing by Ahmad Jamal.
I was 18 in 1960. Had own apt in Basement of motel. In college. Bought album with this tune. Never forget it. Thanks so much
RIP MR. Jamal; thanks for your wonderful music.
This right here, did you hear me? This right here is truly a phenomenal sound!!! Smooth, cool, sexy and relaxing!!! All of these musicians are GREAT!!!
His music lives on…
Always have had a special place in my music loving heart! Thank you, Ahmad Jamal for your grace and musicianship. You mastered your assignment...RIP..The Celestial Orchestra has another incredible member.
I 1st heard the album when I was 10yrs. old in the late 50's, played by my oldest brother Morris Sanders. He's not with us, but I still love the artist and the great music. Thurmond Michael Sanders
Ahmad has a nice smile and seems to be enjoying this, perhaps his 1000th performance of Poinciana
Ahmad has such nice teeth. ( ^ _ ^ )
I listen to this commuting from work, nothing on the road bothers me , crazy drivers ! Nothing! This is beautiful music..... Thank you Ahmad Jamal.
Mr Jamal...you are a gift to this world. You have an incredible touch to the piano. What an inspiration you are to all generations.
Thanks for the music Ahmad ❤
RIP Prince of Hip Economy, you and John Lewis top the bill!
I listen to this approx once weekly, to keep my spirit alive. Thanks to these guys, I'm able to overcome boredom & depression, as I'm getting old & only 10 years younger than Ahmad.
Well then get back to a keyboard or find a piano and do some simple stuff that I bet you can do. Anything on a piano is beautiful bro! Get down there right now!
Ed, I'm 84 and lots of physical things wrong. But, I have LOTS of wonderful memories and also--I have YOU TUBE. This grants me loads and loads of musical wonders, like this one. Lots of them help restore those precious memories for me. Think of the GOOD THINGS in your life and actively throw away the negative ones. Be happy with what you have and don't continue pondering the things you don't have. God made a great place for us to enjoy. Go and enjoy !!
Me too. At 71 now, I clearly remember my very first sound of a music with that piano, hard and good percussion, that tempo that drove me crazy, those pauses throughout, etc.,.etc.
Get yourself a piano, a teacher, some coffee- spend some hours doing it. You'll be a different person. Depression will be in the rear view mirror-
66 and counting. My mom had played this song when I was a kid. I never forgot it . Peace
RIP, Mr. Jamal, you were an early part of my introduction to acoustic jazz, remember seeing him at Blues Alley in the Mid to late 80s. Tried again to see him at Arlington VAs Rosslyn jazz fest in the early 2000s, and dragged my wife and then young children to Rosslyn on a beautiful September day, they tolerated it the best they could!
A part of me is missing with the loss of this extraordinary person. His music always took me to the beautiful places I always dreamed of, I am grateful I still have his music to take me there still.
saw him live in 1958 in St. Louis and he's still amazing :-)
One of the all time best! Humble pause.. letting the others walk the dog... Class!!!
“Letting the others walk the dog” - love that!!!
I remember in about 1959 when this was at the top of the charts. Loved it then and it's still great with many new embellishments.
RIP. This performance is a fabulous legacy for a jazz musician. He made an amazing contribution!
Like I said before, Ahmad Jamal with this tune turned my life around at my age of 12 years old in 1961. From our deaf parents who never knew music, my older sister bought the Ahmad Jamal Live Album at the Pershing Hotel in NY 1959 album with the iconic Poinciana tune. We played it on the old record player. I was instantly hooked on this sound. This new music to me of which I had never known so I was instantly hooked with a 12 year old hypnotic self-induced addiction to something new after Grandma told me to walk down the street to take the Saturday morning piano lessons from the lady. Yes, I'm playing piano again with all the sexy arpeggios. Not bad but others say I should put a vase on the local public piano's they have everywhere here, haha.
I was able to see Ahmad Jamal a number of times not too many years ago at Jazz Alley in Seattle.

Great story!
Had the great privilege of seeing him in 1967 while in college. Remember how smooth he was. Amazing that 50 years later he sounds as good as ever. A jazz giant. The group swings.
Ahmad Jamal managed to extract the piano's true percussive qualities and sublime melodies in equal measure, a truly unique talent, gone but never forgotten. Rest in Peace
Every time I watch this I have a huge smile...
First heard this in 1959. Still the same magic!
I was born in 1958. My dad listened to the local station in Detroit (WJZZ) and I believe I was about 8 when Poinciana caught my ears. You are absolutely right….”Still the same magic”.
Not only is this one of the great jazz compositions, but it's really fun to see how much Ahmad and the band are enjoying playing this live.
rest in power Ahmad Jamal. your music will live on forever and bond many more souls
RIP Maestro ❤
His subtle finger dexterity is still so smooth, clear and precise. A master at work.
I remember watching Ahamd Jamal perform in 1968 at the Village Gate.
He was great then, even better now - wow! :)
That was a great time to be a live in the city. Five Spot, Vanguard, The Gate. Miles, Monk, Mingus, Dizzy. All magical, great audiences and every tune a trip. I love RUclips! haha
You will be missed great brother!
I got hooked on Ahmad Jamal in 1962. When my friends were groovin on Chuck Berry I would sneak in Poincienna and they would laugh and say" more Augie Malted music?" - they got to love it too. But I lost touch and was delighted to see he is the same great talent - nearly 60 years of beautiful music.
I had the original recording of this when I was young. Still love it. Bass p!ayer, percussionist, and drummer are fabulous on this version.
Fantabulous
I cannot stop listening to brother Ahmad Jamal's Poinciana. Been listening to Ahmad since his Pershing Lounge days in Chicago.
RIP, and Thank you!
PEACE OUT 2 1 of the BEST INFLUENTIAL so-called jazz artists of ALL-TIME. Bro. Jamal,
WE THANK U ! WE WILL MISS U ! ! WE'LL NEVER 4GET U ! ! ! WE LOVE U ! ! ! ! ✊🏿
Apart form the genius(es) playing here , the sound quality (recording and mixing) is quite remarkable!! wow!
I first heard Ahmad play this in 58. It was on an Argo LP and played by Sid McCoy on WCFL radio. Sid had a jazz show from 11 to 2am daily. I lived in Chicago and listened every night. This tune and rendition immediately struck lightening.
"This is your boy Sid McCoy." I was 19 years old in 1959 and in the Air Force at Westover AFB in Massachusetts. In the wee hours of the morning we could pick up Sid McCoy's show all the way up there. Your comments brought back a flood of memories.
@@millardallgood6418 I faithfully listened to Sid from 56 to 62. Was introduced to so many jazz greats. Loved the background music of Stan Getz and Johnny Smith playing “Moonlight in Vermont.” WCFL 1000 on the AM dial, Chicago.
RIP to one of the greats.
One of greatest percussionist pieces of all time. Pj
My headache is gone! Ahhhh, this song is priceless, ageless, and so smmmmooooooth and calming. As good as a strong cup of herbal tea on a cold day. Love soaking in the ultimate coolness of this silky smooth jazz classic on a hot day...it never ever gets old. Yet I gently dance with my shoulders in my seat...that’s what We call REAL jazz.
I used to play this piece almost daily, holding my Maltese in my arms and dancing around my apartment. My Maltese loved it and so did I. Now my little one is gone, and I’m too old and unsteady to dance, but I still listen to this and love it.
What a lovely memory that you shared. Next to our wonderful and loyal and loving dogs, isn't jazz the BEST!!! PLEASE dance again, but with someone you love to help to steady you!!! Good health and the best to you, Janet.
RIP genius! thanks for all the amazing music!
R. I. P. Great man! 😢
Listening to this music when I was 12 years old and 60 years later still love it
Rest in Heavenly perfect peace... your music will last forever. This is no ordinary love!!💘
I didn't know he passed. My husband bought my first vinyl albums with an elegant hard cover in the 1950's, he was one of a kind. I love jazz musicians all my life.
