Please forgive me that I may not be able to translate it into correct English.
0:11 Once upon a time there were two old men, Tarobei and Jirobei.
0:17 Tarobei was an honest and hard worker.
0:26 Jirobei was greedy and lazy, and had a big bump on his right cheek.
0:33 Tarobei went to the mountains every day to make firewood.
1:18 The weather in the mountains was volatile and it rained in a blink of an eye.
1:29 Tarobei escaped into the cavity of a large tree nearby.
1:50 Eventually the rain stopped completely.
2:14 Tarobei fell asleep when she was sheltering from the rain.
    3:44 Who are you!
3:49 My name is Tarobei and I live in the village at the foot of the mountain.
    3:55 What do you want?
3:58 I danced with the sound of an interesting Ohayashi accompaniment.
4:07 It's an interesting guy. Human dance is very interesting. Dance more.
5:07 It was a very interesting dance. Let's have a toast.
5:27 We will have another moon viewing party tomorrow night, so please come and visit us. I'll be waiting for you with a good souvenir.
5:47 Take up the "important things" of Tarobei, so that Tarobei will surely come tomorrow.
6:04 That Tarobei must be cherishing the bumps, just as we(Tengu) are cherishing the nose.
6:16 Old man, Daitengu-sama will leave the bumps until tomorrow night.
    6:27 No way! I can't take this.
    7:09 Next day
7:31 Mr. Tarobei, please! May I go on your behalf tonight?
7:39 Surprise the tengu with my favorite Stick dance and get a souvenir.

This film is based on a book from 1875 with the name Kobutori Jisan, only in 1886 the book was translated to english.
The "birdpeople" are in fact devils, and they are familiarized to the surreal and magic, that's why is not impressive for them.

It is a legendary'tengu'that has been handed down to Japan for hundreds of years.
It is said that the model is probably the Jews who arrived in Japan hundreds of years ago.

The stick dance is amazing, but even the people who are watching it are in danger.
I'm sick of the selfish old man who is dancing without worrying about that.
A treasure that you would get if you danced well.
He stole and ran away because he thought he couldn't get it anymore.

add to that, snow white heavily relied on rotoscoping despite having a huge budget.
not only does the animation here appear to be completely original, the drawings are more richly detailed with crisp high-contrast shadows that disney didn't perfect until later.
when this was made, most of the animation world was still stuck on cheap rubber-hose animation techniques when these guys managed to portray semi-realistic human anatomy in motion _before_ disney made it popular.

It's like an old Hungarian joke. Goes like this:
"Hunchback was walking down the forest when he met the Devil. The Devil asked him
    -What's on yer back?
    -Ah, a hunch.
    -Wher'd you get it?
    -Was born this way.
    -You like it?
    -Not very much.
-Here let me take it away form you.
And he takes the hunch from the hunchback. The guy straightens up "bloody hell, thats so good". He starts running out of the forest, meets with a cripple.
    The cripple asks him:
    -Aint you were a hunchback.
-I was, but this bloke in the middle of the forest cured me.
Cripple starts running as fast as his gimpy legs can. He too meets the Devil. The Devil asks:
    -Whats whit yer leg?
    -It's crippled
    -Wher'd you get it?
    -Was born this way.
    -You got a hunch?
    -No.
    -Then here you go."

thanks for that perspective, i just watched this and two worlds and, as an animator myself, what I'm amazed by is the sublime cinematography with limited means, the long story arc and the sombre, serious tone. My knowledge of animation history of that era is a jumbled mess so i don't know how right am i in my vague perception that animation elsewhere at the moment was just dancing skeletons, sure much more lavishly animated but with more of an emphasis on quick thrills, while this feels more like a full length narration, more like a real movie than many movies in the cinema today

A scene like this here 5:44 seeing the Great Tengu and (presumably) chief assistant, the careful ink stokes on cloth, carful line-shading on stone, etc. are very pleasing to look at. Like a moving comic book. Got to love old folklore and stories that ends with a lesson or morale.

So he went back to his village and told about it to another hunchback, who also went into the woods and tried singing along with the elves. @@thegk-verse4216 in the commenters view, this animation is good. lots of modern is bad. Thus most. Unless you can prove that a majority of anime is better than this. Most stands to be subjective. Additionally, I could say 51% is considered most as that is a majority.

It’s really a special kind of peace and relaxing feeling. I studied cinema and even if I discovered by myself or with my lessons, movies that are really complexe by their form and make you feel many thing without that much dialogue too or with some other cinematographic techniques like the way the filmmaker plays with time here again the result on how we feel during and after is so unique and very tangible.

The director and animator of this film used to be a storybook writer during the 1920's I forgot the person who did this film, and yes...it was based from one of his storybooks.

The walking, dancing and other body movements are so realistic for not having computerized assistance. Animators back then 100nyrs ago really used their brains a lot more than we do nowadays. Now the computers do all our thinking for us turning our brains to mush.

The way things are animated here, and the way things move overall...it reminds me of a 60s cartoon. This is so amazingly advanced for 1929
