Speaking as an animation historian: this is extraordinary for the period on an international scale. What it lacks in the smoothness of Winsor McCay makes up for it in technical prowess. What it lacks in mechanical style like Otto Mesmer makes up for it in strong draftsmanship. Damn fine film for any country to be proud of
thanks for that perspective, i just watched this and two worlds and, as an animator myself, what I'm amazed by is the sublime cinematography with limited means, the long story arc and the sombre, serious tone. My knowledge of animation history of that era is a jumbled mess so i don't know how right am i in my vague perception that animation elsewhere at the moment was just dancing skeletons, sure much more lavishly animated but with more of an emphasis on quick thrills, while this feels more like a full length narration, more like a real movie than many movies in the cinema today
Absolutely loving the ink strokes and art-style in general. Very unique for an almost century-old production. A scene like this here 5:44 seeing the Great Tengu and (presumably) chief assistant, the careful ink stokes on cloth, carful line-shading on stone, etc. are very pleasing to look at. Like a moving comic book. Got to love old folklore and stories that ends with a lesson or morale.

This is similar to the Scottish folk tale "Monday, Tuesday." The point is that if you are polite to them, the nature-beings will help you, but if you are greedy, they will punish you.
@@thecandlemaker1329 Scottish and Irish folklore is so similar due to the fact that sections of Scotland and Ireland belonged to the same kingdom. It's interesting how you can see modern anime influences from this. Like only having the bare minimum amount of things moving in a shot to save time on animation.
Wow! Even in the 1920s, Japan was advanced when it comes to animation. This is a great animation from its time. It's like I'm watching the characters moving inside the book.
Can't believe it's from Imperial Japan, they were really good in these stuff. The story clearly showed the peaceful and simple life of average man in those days, the emotions ,the folk stories and most clearly the music in the Empire of Sun.
I have to say that this animation is quite rich and has a lot of flavour. The movements are not jerky or wobbly, the faces and motions are expressive, there is shading and vibration. It may not be in colour but I think it outpaces the contempo disney animations. Also, it is a completely different style

Aha! I was looking for this comment! It has some subtle similarities, like in the feel of the movement, to the work of Lotte Reineger and I wondered if it was similarly produced.
@Bad Boy the moving parts and the backgrounds are flat puppets, separate, cutout pieces of paper that are laid on something like a light table. The pieces are moved a little at a time and then photographed like stopmotion to make the movement.

And these stories always place the blame with the person seeing hope and wanting to get cured instead of the ones who have the power to heal and yet they use it at their whim and refuse to help some and help some others arbitrarily.
Long Long ago, むかしむかし。。。 There is 2 old grandpa with pimples, 1 the hardworking and cheerful, and the other 1 is old grumpy grandpa. One day, while the hardworking and cheerful grandpa work, there is a big rain, and he oversleep while waiting the rain, suddenly the night come, and he wake up because of the loudly sound, and there is a party, a demon party, but he enjoy it, and the demon like the granpa dance, so the demon take the pimples from the grandpa but he must comeback again tomorrow to dance. After he come home, his neighbor, old grumpy grandpa ask him, what happen to him, where his pimples, so the good one told him. And then rhe grumpy grandpa took his place, but the demon didn't like his dance, so demon give him another pimples. 終。
I've heard similar versions of this story, but it was about a baby being replaced with a decoy after the baby was cured of some kind of disease, and instead of a demon party, it was just a doctor or something. There must be many versions of this.
I remember reading this story as a kid. Its about 2 wood choppers. The one with the lump on the left is humble and mild fellow. The one with the lump on the right is jealous and spiteful.. Once he heard about how the Tengu took the lump out of the humble wood chopper. He thought he can pretend to be him and do the same dance in hope that the Tengu would remove the lump on his cheek. Only he failed and angered the Tengu so they gave him the lump of the mild wood chopper on his left cheek. Moral of the story, don't be jealous and spiteful. You will only hurt yourself.
@@pneumonoultramicroscopicsi4065 I don't know man. I didn't write the story? There won't be any morals to learn if the Tengu removed the lump of the jealous for trying to deceive them.
There's an almost identical fairytale in Ireland, only it's about a hunchbacked woodcutter who stumbled upon singing elves in a wood. He sang along with them, and in gratitude the elven queen had his hump removed. So he went back to his village and told about it to another hunchback, who also went into the woods and tried singing along with the elves. But he had no ear for music and ended up ruining their song. As a punishment, the elven queen ordered to attach the woodcutter's hump to his back.
@@_-.-_261 It's much more ancient than that. You can find stories similar to the story of Tower of Babel as far from Israel as in America and India. Folklorists believe that these legends originally spread during humanity's settlement across the planet, and they survived until the present day.
I wonder how the man looked after that experience, having two hunches in his back, depends on the orientation he would look as a camel or as a guy with tities on his back !
I read the same exact story of the hunchbacked woodcutter, but the setting was in old Arabia, and the demons were Jin. The story is written before 1970. I thought it was an original Arabian folktale. The name of the book is أساطير شعبية Volume 4
This is mind blowing. This quality back in the 30s is beyond stunning. Some animation studios never even reached this level of quality in the 50s/60s and this was 30 years prior to that...
I remember reading this story in a Japanese mythology book. The Tengu are my favourite mythical creature and it's amazing to see them in this traditional animated tale.
I like this older type of animation better But i think the fan service is added because either it's a comic adaption as emptytrashcan said Or because of the script or the director
It`s hard to believe this animation was produced in such a long time ago. Japan`s technological standard of animation was quite impressive even before World War II.
The quality of the details of each drawing is impressive plus the story is quite creepy and you understand the plot without even understanding Japanese

It’s really a special kind of peace and relaxing feeling. I studied cinema and even if I discovered by myself or with my lessons, movies that are really complexe by their form and make you feel many thing without that much dialogue too or with some other cinematographic techniques like the way the filmmaker plays with time here again the result on how we feel during and after is so unique and very tangible.
The director and animator of this film used to be a storybook writer during the 1920's I forgot the person who did this film, and yes...it was based from one of his storybooks.
The walking, dancing and other body movements are so realistic for not having computerized assistance. Animators back then 100nyrs ago really used their brains a lot more than we do nowadays. Now the computers do all our thinking for us turning our brains to mush.

I'm not Japanese, but I admire the work and skill that created this work that still plays well so many years later. Talented craftsmen, for sure.
Speaking as an animation historian: this is extraordinary for the period on an international scale. What it lacks in the smoothness of Winsor McCay makes up for it in technical prowess. What it lacks in mechanical style like Otto Mesmer makes up for it in strong draftsmanship.
Damn fine film for any country to be proud of
@No One ..........you are talking to me, right? Because if you get any more random I expect clam chowder recipes
thanks for that perspective, i just watched this and two worlds and, as an animator myself, what I'm amazed by is the sublime cinematography with limited means, the long story arc and the sombre, serious tone.

@@thecandlemaker1329 Scottish and Irish folklore is so similar due to the fact that sections of Scotland and Ireland belonged to the same kingdom. Wow! Even in the 1920s, Japan was advanced when it comes to animation. This is a great animation from its time. It's like I'm watching the characters moving inside the book.
WoW! Already existed MIDI in that time.
This is one of the greatest animation works I've ever seen. The clarity and crispness of the lines and shading is amazing for any time period.
Good to finally watch the original. The version that aired in the US was dubbed with a ragtime piano and a muted trombone.

that fascinating in europe there is a similar story about king of the elves(oberonn i think) taking away the ball of the hunchback and placing it on a willow tree, when the guy told the other hunchback what happened he tried to appeal for the same at the king of the elves but the the king was very displeased and took the hunch from the willow tree and placed it on the hunchback, being twice as large
And these stories always place the blame with the person seeing hope and wanting to get cured instead of the ones who have the power to heal and yet they use it at their whim and refuse to help some and help some others arbitrarily.
Among the Khasis in NE India, they had a similar tale, the only difference is that it is not a knot but a mole

I believe these two stories are related. There must be some cultural sharing in the past along silk route.
@@_-.-_261 It's much more ancient than that. You can find stories similar to the story of Tower of Babel as far from Israel as in America and India. Folklorists believe that these legends originally spread during humanity's settlement across the planet, and they survived until the present day.
