Omg you're the only one to ever mention Phillipa Featherington and Mr. Finch. They make such a big deal about the rarity of a love match in this world and yet everyone glosses over Phillipa and Mr. Finch. They're a love match! I always thought they were really cute as a couple.
The wedding delay and special license is one of the few historically accurate bits though! At the time, to get married you would have to have your marriage announced as upcoming at church for three weeks before you could get married so people could have the chance to pipe up if there were some reason to halt the marriage. This was called having the banns read. The only way to get around this was either a Special License or to go to Scotland where the banns were not required and the age of marriage without parental involvement was 16.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh, it's not, though. There were basically four ways to get hitched in Regency England (assuming you're not one of the exempted dissenting groups, but let's ignore that for now): 1) Go to Scotland, where the Clandestine Marriage Act didn't apply 2) Have the banns read for three weeks in the home parish, followed by a marriage before noon, performed in the home parish of one of the parties by a clergyman of the Church of England. 3) Marriage by Common License, which required a fee and an investigation by the church to assure all was on the up and up, followed by a marriage before noon, performed in the home parish of one of the parties by a clergyman of the Church of England. 4) Marriage by Special license, which required a fee and an investigation by the Archbishop of Canterbury to assure all was on the up and up, followed by a marriage performed by a clergyman of the Church of England, but it could happen at any time and in any place you fancied, as long as the Archbishop said it was cool. It was rare and restricted only to the aristocracy. The last of these could be faster than reading the banns, but not as fast as portrayed in the show and it was much more about showing off that you a) had the cash to splash and b) were too fancy to risk having randos show up at your wedding because it was in public. So special licenses were a thing and Simon, as a duke, is one of the few characters who probably could have gotten one . . . but it wouldn't really have solved the problem they had in the time frame they portrayed?
I was hoping someone talked about this. Like, I get second hand embarrassment So bad yet somehow I was like.... Wait, why does this feel Mortica an Gomez Addams level sexy? Like, I didn't think this would be something appealing yet, they made it seem so cute and alluring? XD 😂
i can confirm the glove thing is real. the amount of fanfictions i have seen which are several thousand words of sensual hand caressing and glove removal is not concerning but definitely significant.
This is reminding me of a certain gross part of The Ugly Truth involving a vibrating pair of underwear that the female lead has to wear at one point (And BTW. It was written by THREE WOMEN. So yeah. Sexism can work both ways)
same. im somewhere under the grey ace umbrella and part of what helped me realize that was the duke making me feel a level of sexual attraction i hadnt in a very long time, if ever lol. sort of a "is _that_ what thats supposed to be?!" moment
@@Bala_NirannaBefore I understood the concept of “aesthetic attraction,” I used to refer to such gentlemen as “decorative.” I don’t want to do anything to them and I really don’t especially want to watch it, but they are very nice to look at.
I am glad to see someone acknowledge that whilst Daphne SAing Simon is undeniably WRONG, she has never been provided with any education on and therefore has no point of reference for the concept of consent
@@Christopher_Gibbons Tell that to children who argue over what toys they want to play with in 1st year. They don't register the concept of mutual respect because they haven't yet been taught, and the same goes for consent.
I am a woman and yes, glove removal scenes are HOT. It is all about the teasing and sensualness of it. Your experiment with your partner was so cute and I'm glad you two just learned something new about one another.
Seriously, it doesn't take much to have people act like Victorian maidens giggling over a man's wrist being shown if it's built up properly. I learned that about people fussing about Mando's wrist.
As a woman, I agree but I'm more of the reversed: a guy taking off his gloves to caress his lover's face never stops me from being a giggly mess. I just wish there was more of it.
Speaking as a man, I agree, gloves can be very sensual. Taking off of said gloves is simultaneously a play of sensations based on length and material, while at the same time establishing a sense of closeness without overt contact.
On the "is the anachronistic writing intentional" subject, the answer is probably. I recently tried to get my sister to read a book that takes place in the Victorian era that did a really good job with incorporating the speech not just in dialogue but in the description. My sister was completely unable to finish the book, because she couldn't understand it. The writing was confusing to her. So Bridgerton's success is probably due to the fact that there's just enough flavor for readers to feel the setting, but not so much as to scare off readers unfamiliar with the speech and writing style of the era.
Regency novels aren't known for historical accuracy. You can exchange the words bra for corset, car for carriage, and country club for court and it would novel I enjoy reading Regency romances here and there but they are the hallmark xmas movie of books
This. Ultimately historical genre fiction is meant to engage the reader in whatever tropes and plots they're into reading, more than be a completely accurate historical account. There's definitely more and less accurate stuff out there but in reality, it's costume drama, it's dress up and that's the pleasure of it.
@@Ceares Agreed. Historical fiction is meant to be entertaining and to give readers a glimpse into another epoche. For historical accuracy just get an actual history book about the period. And you can never fit "all of it" into one book anyway, which is why people study those things for years at universities. There are some pretty good/accurate documentaries/live on a victorian farm-style series out there too.
Eh, to be fair, there are degrees of this and Bridgerton does it much, much more than a lot of perfectly readable books. Honestly, I think sometimes we overestimate how challenging historically accurate prose needs to be. It certainly CAN be, and obviously the craft of writing has evolved over time, but it doesn't need to be. I have a friend who read a few older classics but none as old as Pride and Prejudice, and none in the romance genre. He read P&P on my recommendation and was shocked by how easy it was to read, and part of that is obviously a credit to Austen for writing a masterpiece, but I think another part is that we overestimate how challenging historical prose needs to be. Going into modern authors, I've read compulsively readable books with no anachronisms that I noticed, and DNF-ed books with more modern language just because I couldn't get into them. I'm not saying modern language isn't sometimes easier, but I do think it's a relatively minor factor in how readable something is, even if you're not familiar with the time period or the genre.
Hey Dom, reading the banns was actually something you had to do in order to get married in Regency England and they had to be read out at either the man or woman's church three times -- so you had a minimum 3 week engagement period.... unless you were wealthy and could afford a special marriage license that let you get married where you wanted when you wanted. This is why Mrs. Bennet starts gushing to Lizzy about her being able to be married by special license when she finds out about her engangement to Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice.
I absolutely want more breakdowns of Bridgerton adaptations! It's so interesting to see how a story changes willingly to accomodate for later characters and plot points. It's all so fascinating.
@@phoenixfrommars5832 Nah. But maybe that's because I find Anthony profoundly unlikeable and also the whole conflict between him and Kate was kinda ridiculous. Anthony was already a lord and could literally choose whatever wife he wanted, so the only obstacle was his own stupidity. That's not particularly romantic.
i'm not a bridgerton superfan but i am a lost in adaptation superfan and i'd love for s2 (and maybe following season) to be covered bc this case is so fascinating to me
I just want to say, there are very few cis white men I will beg to explain things I like to me. But you are securely on that list. Please continue explaining Brigerton seasons at length, if you would be so kind.
Same! I've been spoiled for historical fiction by Courtney Milan (whose most recent offerings involve BOTH leads being POC), so I'm unlikely to read the Bridgerton books; but I really enjoyed hearing about how well they've been adapted
As someone who adored these books when they first came out, I understand that they would be considered average now. At the time I picked up "The Viscount Who Loved Me" for the first time, I was a junior in high school who had to rely on hunting down romance novels in the public library. I'd read countless traditional bodice rippers with so much dub con that reading a book with two humorous people falling in love with minimal abuse was so refreshing that I proceeded to hunt down everything else Julia Quinn had written. At the time, the anachronistic style was accessible for a high schooler burned out on literature. I imagine thousands of other women looking for something lighter in the historical romance genre also read the Bridgerton series and enjoyed it similarly.
"I am now a Bridgerton fan." was HILARIOUS. Also I appreciate the glove removal demonstration because internally I was like "yeah there's no way people really find it hot." and was very quickly proven wrong. I get it now. As an asexual, the books aren't super my cup of tea. I've enjoyed some more than others but I'm unfortunately stuck on Eloise's. I finished it, but did not enjoy it so it's hard for me to get to the next one, which I want to do so I'll understand the differences myself. I LOVED this episode of Lost in Adaptation. I really appreciate the recap and pointing out things I didn't notice from my reread. I really hope you do season two! Love the skits also!
Listen, i normally get annoyed when media youtubers interrupt their analysis to do a little skit, but i always look forward to yours. You keep em tight and to the point, they're usually things that are better communicated with an example rather than a description, and your commitment to the bit is unmatched. Well done, sir.
There wasn't a minimum engagement time per se, but you had to announce your marriage in the papers two weeks before the actual wedding, to allow for people to speak up against it (e.g. parent's, already married partners (this is not a joke, because there wasn't a country wide register for marriages, you could just ditch your old partner, move somewhere else and potentially get married again) or people that had some other reason to contest the wedding. That's one of the reasons why people liked to elope to Scotland, because that law didn't exist there.
The reading of the banns had nothing to do with the papers. It was a church announcement made at the churches in the county to for three weeks straight. This did serve the purpose you brought up though.

Daphne sexually assaulting Simon in the show was hard to watch, but it's even worse in the original novel, when he was drunk, and therefore, couldn't consent.

Sooo many people defended it, it was disgusting. The fact that he said "no" and "stop" several times and she ignored it seemed not to register with the wider audience. That part almost made me stop watching the show altogether.

This dude has a lot of money and is a noble and learned how to fight from an eccentric noble man. While his beloved wife is incredibly sick and dying he starts fighting injustice as a way to deal with his grief, and he starts going to the most dangerous and poorest neighborhood in the city to help people and save kids to take them to an orphanage he partly sponsors, and for most of his book he is investigating a plot where poor kids are being taken to be forced to work for a mysterious person, who is exploiting them to make money. The specific book is called Lord of Darkness by Elizabeth Hoyt, and the book series is called Maiden Lane.
The plethora of handsome dukes of marriageable age (and at least reasonably close to heroine's age) is astounding. I read one once were the future duke and his siblings grew up on an estate within walking distance of a neighboring estate on which there was also a duke's son growing up. There are maybe 16 non-royal dukes in the UK and they have thousands of acres usually spread over several properties. The chances of 2 being roughly the same age, both being raised on neighboring estates, AND have the manors be located sufficiently close to the edge of the property to make walking visits feasible is simply astronomical.

To answer your glove question: YES. Both having mine removed and seeing someone (not necessarily a man, but someone masc with nice hands) just... _does things_ to me.
I've always thought that Daphne's actions were a result of how she was educated on the subject of sex/intimacy (or lack thereof) and how she was raised in general. Still 100% wrong, but like you said, I wasn't surprised when it happened.
Yeah, I guess how they should've handled it better is how it was treated within the narrative. Like, have Daphne actually learn that it was wrong. Watching the aftermath of that was so grating because it's al framed around Simon having to earn HER forgiveness and not the other way around.
One of my favorite historical romance authors has a heroine who gets pregnant (and eventually miscarries) exactly because there is no sex ed at the time and her seducer keeps assuring her that what they are actually doing isn't what's going to happen after they get married but something else instead that is perfectly acceptable before marriage between (secretly) engaged persons. The doctor who is the hero is somewhat of a reformer and has a nice rant on the subject.
I cackled at the cut away revealing you wearing your single medal, as if it can comfort you in these dark and trying times... Of reading mid romance novels lol.
Also, I don't think Clue involves killing the other guests in the board game. You're trying to figure out which of the guests killed Mr. Body. In the Bridgerton version "One young lady or lord has been embroiled in a scandal of the heart, and it's up to you to discover who it was, how they were caught, and the location of the tryst."
Bridgerton Clue sounds like something the Bridgerton children would actually play together in the books, and quit halfway through because they got too competitive.
For me, Bridgerton feels like one of those fancy desserts that looks absolutely gorgeous in its spectacle but taste wise can range from decent to meh. It's a guilty pleasure for so many, myself included, but I do love that such a good and fun romance series is leading the charge at Netflix and is as popular as it is. Romance is still looked down upon today, despite being one of the best-selling genres of books, so it's just nice to see that good romances are still being created for the audiences who love them. Also Dom, I would absolutely love to hear you discuss Seasons 2 and 3 and Queen Charlotte - I do think you would love them, especially now that you've read the books, though I guess that means you would have to read the Queen Charlotte book... Lastly, I'm not going to mention BetterHelp because Dom already did; I'm just glad he's listening to the audience and taking steps to avoid sponsorships like them in the future. We appreciate you, Dom!
I don't have any interest in Bridgerton as a show or a book, but International Delight released an Ice Coffee Berries and Cream flavor because of it, and the joy it brings to my day makes me grateful that this is such a massive success. Thanks, Bridgerton fans, I owe you one
Absolutely need to see your feedback on the adaptation of season 2, especially since you have read all the books and know major plot points from the later stories
Yes! HBO's Rome was brilliant! And Polly Walker, one of the strongest parts of an across-the-board well-written, well-acted show. She needs more credit.
Regarding the Queen being involved in the Duke and Daphne’s marriage plans: it’s actually a thing where couples needed the banns (meaning their names would be called out) to be announced in church for a three Sundays in a row. A special license from the Archbishop of Canterbury way of circumventing the pomp of all this, especially in “delicate” situations, like being compromised, as Daphne was. Another alternative referenced in the show was going to Gretna Green in Scotland, because they didn’t have as many restrictions on marriage.
Special licenses weren't really about being compromised, they were about privacy (it gave you permission to marry outside the morning hours and outside your parish church) and showing off your social and economic status (they were expensive, rare, and limited to members of the aristocracy). It wasn't even particularly fast (they're not getting it the next day!) because it still required the Archbishop of Canterbury to do an investigation. It would just mean Duke Simon wouldn't have to deal with rabble being able to gawk.
The Simone internal monologue skit : perfection 👌 The glove removal not getting it then checking if it actually works : gold ❤ Soo keen for the other seasons disections.

it always rubbed at me the way bronte criticised austen, and that's one of various indicators of what I don't like about her as a writer. i think she's more fluff than substance, and there are many aspects of the romantic movement that i think did harm to us as a society
@@cocolime6496 you want harm caused by the romantic movement, the book Young Werther made it "trendy" for young men to off themselves in fits of emotion. Artistically, Romanticism was about what you feel over rational reason. In terms of art, it's a fresh change of style, but the philosophy of studying passion rather than thinking things through can be incredibly damaging.
It took me way too long to realize that the glove removal was done on your actual significant other and wasn't just a clever green screen trick. Simon's father being changed from someone just obsessed with his lineage to someone terrified of losing his newly acquired social equality by slipping up and not being perceived as perfect sounds like it could've been a really great plot point, but given the author went out of her way to ignore race in the source material, it was always doomed to fall flat and stay undercooked in my opinion.
Wouldn't the source material inherently not incorporate racial issues, unless the author specifically made characters who were involved in them? Like one family whose wealth comes from colonial plantations, and another family heavily involved in lobbying for the criminalization of slavery and the slave trade?
On the topic of the colour integration into high society, you see that racism in Queen Charlotte. The main Bridgerton story takes place about 50 years after the marriage of George and Charlotte and both the Queen and people like Agatha work hard to stamp out any echo of it. But even before their marriage, POCs were present in high society just didn't have titles to be part of the Queen's court. We see this in the Danburys getting their title but already living lavishly. They've been working on integrating for a while, but a Queen of colour was what kicked off the final changes, as racial discrimination of one of the King's subjects, was a direct reflection of his choice in wife as well. We also see the beginnings of "Racism is taught" in the contrast between 1. The Dowager Princess and her son and 2. Young Violet and her Dad and his Wife/her Mother. Looking at our own timeline, 50 years made a lot of progress from segregation to the year 2000, but as I point out, at the time of Queen Charlotte's marriage, POCs were NOT segregated just 'not yet held to the same regard', but almost. 50 years to be rid the ton of most racism seems reasonable to me, that's 2 generations for normalizing integration, but not so long that there are mixed families everywhere you look.
31:55 to be fair to the series...A lot of cruel, abusive parents *are* paranoid over nothing. Or, they're not paranoid at all but pretend there's actually something to be scared of to have better control over their kids. Maybe it was an actual concern that he blew out of proportion. Abusive people aren't *rational* all the time is my point, and as someone who had incredibly abusive parents who weren't rational, it feels like a very realistic portrayal to me.

Absolutely true
Some countries still require the banns to be posted before marriage, and are required to be posted in at least the office of the wedding officiant.
There was also a bishop's licence which had more restrictions than a special licence but also replaced the banns.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh, it's not, though.
There were basically four ways to get hitched in Regency England (assuming you're not one of the exempted dissenting groups, but let's ignore that for now):
1) Go to Scotland, where the Clandestine Marriage Act didn't apply
2) Have the banns read for three weeks in the home parish, followed by a marriage before noon, performed in the home parish of one of the parties by a clergyman of the Church of England.
Hence running to Gretna Green

I am a woman and yes, glove removal scenes are HOT. It is all about the teasing and sensualness of it.
Your experiment with your partner was so cute and I'm glad you two just learned something new about one another.
Seriously, it doesn't take much to have people act like Victorian maidens giggling over a man's wrist being shown if it's built up properly. I learned that about people fussing about Mando's wrist.
As a woman, I agree but I'm more of the reversed: a guy taking off his gloves to caress his lover's face never stops me from being a giggly mess. I just wish there was more of it.
Julia quinn was plagiarizing a scene in the Age of innocence
Speaking as a man, I agree, gloves can be very sensual. Taking off of said gloves is simultaneously a play of sensations based on length and material, while at the same time establishing a sense of closeness without overt contact.
As a man, I have no idea what's going on here 😂I just like how the framerate was super smooth when he took her glove off in the dream sequence.
Adding my voice to the "we want season 2" crowd
On the "is the anachronistic writing intentional" subject, the answer is probably. I recently tried to get my sister to read a book that takes place in the Victorian era that did a really good job with incorporating the speech not just in dialogue but in the description. My sister was completely unable to finish the book, because she couldn't understand it. The writing was confusing to her. So Bridgerton's success is probably due to the fact that there's just enough flavor for readers to feel the setting, but not so much as to scare off readers unfamiliar with the speech and writing style of the era.
Regency novels aren't known for historical accuracy. You can exchange the words bra for corset, car for carriage, and country club for court and it would novel
I enjoy reading Regency romances here and there but they are the hallmark xmas movie of books
What was the Victorian book?
It was still a thing until at least 1972
If you get married in a church it still happens, at least in CofE

Good to know that Dominic was crushing on the Duke as hard as the rest of us.
"Good Lord, I was almost just killed by a word" was both hilarious and adorable 😅

Gossip colums had been around since the late Renaissance actually. Just one of the gifts of the Printing press.
Daphne sexually assaulting Simon in the show was hard to watch, but it's even worse in the original novel, when he was drunk, and therefore, couldn't consent.

Curiosity demanded I find out what book it was because I couldn’t rest otherwise, and I did.

It's a guilty pleasure for so many, myself included, but I do love that such a good and fun romance series is leading the charge at Netflix and is as popular as it is.

Rip the better help ad, absolutely get mental health help but pls from a better provider. Had so many friends share their bad experiences :((
Pleeeeease rethink the better help sponsorships going forward 😰
JacksFilms didn't reconsider them, yet he's still going, so...
@@purplepedantry which is a pity. I haven't watched Jack's films for years so I have little to say about that really. I just know that Dom is normally very conscientious of who he supports, so I was hoping this was a fluke. Given his additional comment under this video, I think that is the case. We'll have to see if they show up again in the future to know if he's sincere about vetting his sponsors going forward
Whats wrong with better help?
@@rolandogarcia2889 Very sloppy hiring practices, many people have had horrible and demeaning experiences. (Not to say that there haven't been people with good experiences, just that there shouldn't be that much of a chance for this stuff to happen)

Re: Bronte on Jane Austin.
While there is some class sentiment in Bronte's words, it's also about the Neo-classicism of the Georgeian Era being swept away by Victorian Romanticism. There was a whole revolution in architecture and gardening that occurred between the two periods that these women lived in, and that revolution made a visual reference for the restraint of earlier years versus the "wild and natural" Romantic period.
Bronte set Jane Eyre in the Regency period. The book mentions a portrait of the prince of wales. There wasnt a prince of wales after 1820
@@somethingclever8916 That's nice, I guess?
Doesn't really change that Bronte essentially laments over the writing style of her parents and/or grandparents generation.
it always rubbed at me the way bronte criticised austen, and that's one of various indicators of what I don't like about her as a writer. i think she's more fluff than substance, and there are many aspects of the romantic movement that i think did harm to us as a society
Yes yes YES to a season 2 (and 3!!) video! I love your perspective 😍😍😍
Was gonna mention the sponsorship, but then saw you had addressed it! What can i say, we stan our responsible kings.
where did he address it!? I can't find it anywhere

Hands down the best joke I've ever heard just now was you nearly being killed by a word..😂 that was absolutely hilarious
Dominic, please rethink the betterhelp sponsor. They got shit for not requiring therapists be qualified before, and THEY SELL PATIENTS' INFO
jackson pollocking the sheets. What a great line
having read the books every season is much much better than the book
Why is that?
@@seanmalloy0528the novels are all too similar and every male love interest is a pisstake but honestly i like and can appreciate them for what they are but the shows characters feel more rounded but that’s just me
I have never read or watched Bridgerton, and I am asexual, but I can confirm, as a woman, that slowly removing gloves is extremely sexy.
i know nothing of the books and I’ve not heard of the series until now, I’m just on the “Dom is fun to listen to, so I’m sure this will be entertaining!” train.
Hear betterhelp, that's the end of the video for me
Hearing someone say ‘mental health professionals’ and ‘better help’ in the same sentence in the year of our lord 2024? For why?
Extremely disappointed..... There is 0 excuse to be accepting betterhelp ads....
Because he doesn't do this shit for free and has to make a living.
@@JJHeff To be fair, the complaint, so far as I can tell, is not that he needs sponsorships in general, but that Better Help is just kind of a crappy organization? Even he's weighed in on the fact in a different comment that he hopes to do better in making sure his sponsors, when they happen, are better vetted/researched in future.
@@JJHeff No, *that* is not the issue, its perfectly fine for him to get sponsors, the problem is that that sponsor was better help. Lets just say there have been some controversies around them.
