I will happily pay toll for access controlled & well maintained expressways etc.
But on any trip most of the toll goes towards state highways & local town bypass roads that are extremely accident prone due to peds/cattle/2W/tractors & rickshaw, not maintained properly & poorly lit & should anyway come from the states budget. They are charging roadtax on every single vehicle - where are they using it if we are paying tolls for every damn road.

Sub 4meter law ruined cars in India. It has over stayed its welcome and now should be abolished and modified. We get sub-standard cars, not that powerful engine and we get all that its expensive. Cars have become a necessity for middle class especially looking at the our state transport buses and railways. All RTOs collect at least 10% tax on vehicles but the condition of our roads is still the same. India doesn't get so many good cars from Japanese,European, American and Korean auto makers only because the sub 4 meter law.

The 4-meter law is not the worst law by any stretch, especially in India with a population that is probably most inconsiderate towards others. If there is no length tax, everyone will buy bigger cars and hog the roads with just 1 passenger in a huge car. Most of us don't care about less fortunate people. Public transport is what we should aim for because less than 10% of our population owns a car, imagine if the number increases to 20 or 40%, roads will become undrivable with no space whatsoever.

@tbh-insights and for EVs the GST rate is only 5% and even the electricity you buy is not subject to GST since it's governed by the electricity act (electricity duty). However rates for electricity differ very widely in India - places like Mumbai have high rates and places that are rural have very low rates, in some states electricity is subsidized by the government. Compare that with petrol/diesel which is taxed very heavily.

  • @triforceparas5658
    @triforceparas5658 21 день назад +2

Mann these taxes should be based on price of car than the dimensions its just stupid
firstly, GST should be only 5% on EVs, 18% on cars costing under 10lks 28% for < 30lks and 35% for 30lks+
and complete removal of CESS we are already paying taxes on fuel and not to mention fuel prices never go down even if the global crude oil prices reduces and Toll Taxes recently got skyrocketed Pune-Mumbai one way which is just 130kms costs ₹360 as toll
CESS should be only applied to those cars which are either less efficient or create a tone of pollution or if the Car is purchased for business use because business purchase can have GST return

A bit of context: With our cities expanding at a massive scale, travelling is no longer an option but a necessity. Now, you might say - well people can travel using public transport. But, with such a massive population its pretty impractical for everybody.
Now, coming to your question of why cars when we have bikes - something similar applies - "Safety". With such a huge number of trucks and other such heavy vehicles that move around in the city, safety becomes a concern and the only (better) solution when compared to a bike, would be a 'CAR'.
Well, you might say - everybody travelling in a car isn't practical. That's true, but it's ideal (if we have much much better infrastructure) like in the US.

    XUV 700 - AX7 Diesel AWD (Top-End)

    • GST + Cess (28+22=50%): ₹7.89L
    • Ex-Showroom: ₹23.69L
    On-Road Costs (Chennai):
    1. Registration: ₹4.78L
    2. Insurance: ₹1.4L
    3. Other Charges: ₹25K
    Total On-Road Price: ₹30.13L
    Now, consider this:
    • The car’s actual worth is just ₹15.79L ( manufacture’s price after accounting for all cost, warranty provisions, margins etc)
    • Buyers typically pay 50% upfront - so in this case takes a ₹15L loan for 5 years, paying ~₹4L interest. He’s able to buy the car outright he but borrowing to pay for the taxes. So 15l taxes becomes 19L
    • In 5 years, they’ll also spend ₹4.5L on fuel taxes (fuel cost - ₹15K/month - taxes -₹7.5k/month).
    Final Cost for a ₹15.79L car? ₹40L
Out of which 25 lakhs paid for taxes in 5 years

Because we pay 6 lakh for the actual car and 3 lakh to government and not 9 lakh for car out of which government is 30 percent owner.

Not sure if cars are expensive in India . Then what about car prices in Europe and uk and India seems cheap ofcourse not talking about imported ones just the ones manufactured within India just like ones in Europe
I just bought a creta top model in India and I was able to afford it new without debt / feeling pinched , but buying a European car in London for me new is crazy starting prices of decent entry level cars are £45000 which is like 50 lakhs just for the car, insurance costs etc are additional and crazy and then there is car thefts which needs more spending on trackers etc total cost of car to park it in my garage be about 55lakhs just in the first year which is crazy.
Only in USA , canada and Saudi car prices are relatively cheaper rest of the world I would buy a car in India anyday than spending a fortune anywhere else

I think taxation on expensive cars are justified. If you can afford a luxury like a car in india and are willing to buy an expensive one to be pampered in then you have to pay for it.
I am in middle class and cannot afford an expensive car, but i dont complain the tax system, i think it is completely justified.
If you just want a practical car with naviagaion and a/c you can get one around 6 lakhs, want to be pampered? You have to pay for it.
There are thousands of people who struggle to even have one meal a day in India, and you cannot go driving about in you a/c, massaging seat, sunroof car without paying for it.

Your idea of creating an economically equal society by exponentially taxing the rich to ensure that poor people can eat food isn't the best option.
