For well over 600 years, tales of an outlaw and master archer wearing hooded green robes who robs the rich to give to the poor have been at the pinnacle of English folklore.
From his first mention in ballads and poems in the 14th Century right through to the countless television and movies productions of the 20th and 21st centuries, Robin Hood continues to appeal to us - whether in his outwitting of the Sheriff of Nottingham, his mischievous adventures in Sherwood Forest with Little John and his merry men, his pursuit to win the heart of Maid Marion, or even in the continued relevance of his mission to end wealth inequality.
Whether Robin Hood was a real historical figure outside of these literatures and folk tales is still a subject of debate - even in academic circles. On the one hand, there are several medieval records, chronicles, and parliamentary and legal documents from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries which make reference to a 'Robehod', 'Rabunhod', 'Robert Hood', and 'Robin Hood'. One the other, both Robert and Robin were incredibly common names in the medieval period, and it is known that some criminals took on the name of Robin Hood as a moniker.
Some will say he was real person, perhaps a certain 'Robert Loxley' in disguise as the Prince of Thieves. Others will say he has only ever existed on paper, stage, screen, and the imagination. Either way, there's no denying that Robin Hood has cemented himself as an English cultural icon.
This piece was written and recorded by me using the Fantasy Orchestra from ‪‪@EWQLTutorials‬. It was also inspired by the music of John Powell.
What should I write next? Let me know in the comments!
