My Dad, who was from the era of these two cars, told me about a game his buddies would play in the evening watching cars go by and naming them based on the tail lights. The Mercury looks a much more substantial vehicle. Enjoyed the comparison.

I was probably 3 years old when those cars were made and I never realized that they were so many differences between the FORD and the Merc...........In my city we had a FORD PLANT and my friends and I would look through the windows and watch the 1946 FORDS being put together on the assembly line.......I ended up owning TWO 1946 FORDS, a woody wagon and a convertible in 1953.....
What a great year for the Ford & Merc. Some of the best looking body styling imo. They look great stock & great any way You want to mod them. So many way's to go with them. 😁👌

I read the door treatment was a cost savings, as the convertible was the same door. The same could be said for the 40 through 48 Continental. Also, compare the styling or coups, and see the similarities.
My Gearhead LA native Hotrodder-era complete master mechanic Dad dragged home a '40 Merc Coupe for my first car. Bad orange dull primer but straight and complete roller with trans/3rd member. No engine -we went to Ford Obsolete in Santa Ana, CA - which was an unbelievable huge ancient boneyard/warehouse of primarily Flathead and pre-Flathead-era Ford parts. Everything from Model T and complete Deuce bodies sitting outside in the yard to any and all Ford parts from those eras. This was mid-1970s and the place obviously had been there for many years before. An absolutely mind-boggling place long gone now, out of a vintage Ford parts dream especially nowadays. As a 15 year-old I was just learning about all of it. We bought there and got running a Flathead -all stock single carb, might have been a Stromberg. I believe it was an 8-BA- he taught me how to drop it in in front of our house we did together. Found a junkyard passenger seat - maybe a Corvair? but pretty standard-original-looking shape split bench. I wanted the original Mohair look but we did some kind of 70s matte tan Ultrasuede kind of Mohair-looking on the cheap. Body straight and got 'er painted Black at good ol' Earl Scheib for like $100 bucks then. Of course my LA Dad was of the pre-and Postwar HotRodder era so the Merc was tres' cool for him maybe more than I .Even then I longed for the '39-40 Ford roofline and the 'hardtop' look they were starting with the Merc of that era even to me then looked awkward. It was fairly fast -added 'duals' out back like yours. It moved out pretty good on the stock 3-speed, a bit smoky in there as of course we all know for early Fords. I drove it to school, squired GF's and all the back seat shenanigans in it that was way pre light years before Internet, I would've chopped it Matranga-style to fix that dowdy roofline that kind of ruins the look of these now-coveted Mercs. By the way -in that era at least and to my Dad's 1940 LA teenage street racer era-knowledgeable-speak, the Body Style was known then as the 'Club Coupe' Cheers ~ FH

thanks for video ive learned a lot from it i have a very nice all original low milage black 39 ford deluxe coupe im 78. when i was a teen i wanted the car i have and ive had it for many years sometimes i just set and look at its so pretty i dont drive it by myself anymore my wife tells me i have so many extra parts that i could build another one not true ive learned a lot more about my car and the merc thanks again tom bragg
Good comparison Matt, GM was very much the same with their products. I have two 1936's a Chevy and Pontiac and even though they are very similar in look almost all parts are not interchangeable. Great episode as always!!!❤❤ I am working on acquiring a Ford one day, lol
I always thought the merc was showing the future of the 41-48 ford also in the rear trunk shape, and the roof on a 41 up ford is kinda them putting a 39-40 roof on a merc
The Ford imo is definitely the better looking vehicle of course it could be that I spent a substantial amount of time in my uncle’s 39 Ford 2 dr. Sedan in the early fifties.
Personally I like the 39 Ford better just like the flow of the body . Both cars our still nice . They need a spring bath and shine . 😅 l know it's winter .
How do you keep it all straight when all the parts are off the car. Like, you buy a 40 hood and some fenders, but for some reason the parts dont line up. Is there differences between the cars and trucks on Ford. I currently have a 39 wide 5 chassis. Trying to buy parts but there is so little info out there. Please do a video on this
I am looking at a 1941 Ford, 1/2 ton pickup I am considering purchasing. It is all stock, but has been repainted. It is in good condition with an all steel body. What price range would one of these go for? It has not been hotroded. It hs been in the same family for 4 generations.
Ford had always to differentiate with Mercury in what is standard on Ford is heavy duty on Mercs, different wheel base/better ride, higher roof/ more comfortable remember at this time men wore nice hats, bigger motor/more power. Case in point post war Mercs always bigger/baby Lincolns, in 70's Cougars parts were used to repair Mustangs as interchanged when Ford parts not available but Ford parts not fitting Mercs. You can find Ford parts reproduced but Mercs are like hens teeth. As for the tail lights look at the 46-48 Ford for the similarly to the Merc. Keep up the great work Matt, I love my Mercs just because they are slightly different. 👍
Excellent video, Matt. It looks like the Merc has a passenger side mirror and the Ford does not. Is that a difference between them, or is it just missing on the Ford?
I prefer the Ford over the Mercury. It'd be even better if it was a 39 Standard. To my eye, they got the front sheetmetal styling just right, with those cars. [Just a personal preference]In reality, I wouldn't knock back either of those 2 you own.
That convertible only rumor could be right. The '39 lincoln Zephyr coupe has the best long roof line that is more similar to the Ford coupe line. The Mercury never utilized that great styling cue.
Ford is definitely the better body style! The color of that Ford is kind of shabby next to the Merc, which detracts from the Ford styling. I liked Mercury styling better by the time of the mid-fifties, but not before.
why don't you discuss the difference between the standard and the deluxe models , I have had both. my dad worked for ford for 40 yrs . the last on was a39 standard until 1960 then it went to his brother my uncle.
A lot of the information that you presented here is getting lost in time. Maybe this will help "archive" the information for younger people interested in old cars. IMHO, the Ford is a better looking car that the Mercury, FWIW
You guys need to buy a cheap steamer. Fun tool. Can do all kinds of sh*t with it, depending upon the "delicacy" of the piece you are steaming. If the upholstery could survive the process, it would clean the shit out of it with no chemicals. Seats would be my worry, that headliner though, WOW .. would have no issues playing with that !!
My 40 coupe came with the package tray. I’ve seen others with two jump seats that folded down from either side of the car. Not sure if the 39 had the same setup.

His original idea was to call the new brand "Ford-Mercury" instead of just "Mercury", which probably would have just confused people

re: Merc roof - the roof on my 53 Packard 2dr ht literally bolts on, to the top of the windshield frame back to the sail panel. Instant roadster. 😎
To me the 39 Merc always looked like a 39 deluxe that had been in the sun too long & started to melt!

The mercury looks like a ford that gained some weight. The head lights being the same is a surprise as they look slightly different in the video.

Were the Ford Coupe not marketed as a "Businessman's Coupe?" This would eliminate the need for a rear seat.
