This video is about the negative things I have found with my Vmax after owning it for 7 years.
The sound is a bit difficult at times so I am sorry. I have ordered a new mic.

It's a 1985 bike! When it came out all bikes had similar engineering . Apart from a tweak here and there, Yamaha kept the bike to original specs. I personally have the '95 model, I find it comfy, controlable, and as for having to get off to fill up,,,,,come on mate!
All bikes will kill you if you don't ride within your and the bikes means. I love mine!

Hi Robert. I love mine too. sadly I have lost many family members and friends to motorcycle crashes. I just hope everyone rides safe. Riding my Vmax is something that never gets tiring for me even though there are a few negatives. I'll be keeping mine for a long time yet. Thank you always for subscribing and commenting.

Well, some of your review I'd agree with. The size of the tank and the seat. That's about it. I owned a 1985 for 20 years and would have it today if ethanol hadn't clogged the carburetors. The front suspension was too soft, not too hard. I put a spring kit in the front fork and that solved it. I upgraded the seat to an aftermarket seat. The rest of the design is at or better than the other 1985 bikes. I'm 6'3" and had no problem with the seating position. Before addressing the safety issues, it's important to understand what the VMax was designed to do: Get fast quickly in a straight line. That's it. It isn't a bike you want to really lean into a curve with (the exhaust pipes will drag and could lift the rear wheel). Not much else to say about the performance except to hang on when the boost kicks in. The design was one of a kind and noticed by everyone. My favorite activity was to park in the middle of some Harley posers and watch them scatter. The VMax is what their bikes pretended to be.

Hi and thanks for watching and commenting. Sorry you don’t have your bike anymore especially when you love it so much. I’m 6 foot 1 and have had my yellow 1985 vmax now for about 15 years. I love both my bikes and tried to give an honest review on my feelings. I’ve ridden hundreds of different bikes and Vmax’s s are still my favorite. I’ve lost a few friends on Vmax’s also sadly and hope young kids show them a lot of respect when they jump on and feel the boost kick in as it’s like a drug. Thanks for commenting and giving others your opinion. I hope you get to own another one day. KR

3:28 I've seen some motorcycles catch fire while filling the tank, so since very young I adopted a rule of getting off the bike to fill it. So, for me, this is not a negative side.

  • @jroberthadden

It is a mid '80s motorcycle. Of course there's NO ABS. Ride it accordingly. As far as the brakes and suspension are concerned, the brakes and front forks were enlarged in '96. Rear shocks are easy to replace, also. My '04 handles and stops great but, as you alluded to, these bikes should only be ridden by experienced and mature motorcyclists who know what to expect. Squids should stick to bikes that suit them.

jroberthadden Hello. I have sadly known 2 Vmax riders that didn't know the bikes didn't have ABS and have since crash and died. In the next few weeks I will be making #2 about my bike and changes I have made to improve it and #3 the reasons I love my Vmax and will never sell it. I hope you will subscribe and continue to comment.

So with ABS one can monster grip the front brake? I dont think that's recommended even with ABS. People think motorcycle brakes are like car brakes. Progressive braking. Even if you have a new bike with all the nanny tech use progressive braking. Or rather don't ride a motorcycle if you think you can slam on the front brakes without repercussions.

@@jroberthadden I was more less thinking out loud. This reply is a discussion and not a critique or rebuttal of you or your commentary. But why would anyone assume a bike made in the 1980s would have ABS braking? You said your friends got hurt badly because they crashed their bikes. Their excuse for crashing was "My bike didnt have ABS brakes." My point is even WITH ABS brakes you never death grip the front brake on a motorcycle. Its just a shame people got hurt. Its like the personal watercraft craze of the 1990s. People jumped on them expecting to drive them like an automobile and they proceeded to hurt themselves and others- even kill other people because they assumed it was a simple gas and go type ride.

I'm not so sure the bike is any more dangerous than any other older bike. The fact is that a good portion of riders are quite deft on the controls. ABS and such is a nice addition, but most come to rely on it too much I think. It's especially bad if one is used to a new bike, then hops on a max. The new bike has taught them poor riding habits. I have watched so many videos of people gorilla gripping the front brake lever on bikes, or stomping on the rear, there's harsher repercussions to that on an older and less equipped bike. Poor rider input yields poor results. I've owned my max for many years, it's definitely not a refined machine, more sledge hammer than scalpel I think.

Hi and thanks for commenting and supporting my channel. I have ridden bikes since I was a child so I never grew up with the safety that new bikes now have. I like ABS because it's safe and save lives but for us oldies who grew up with out it the Vmax is no problem to ride. I always think of the Vmax as if it was a 250cc bike and someone put a 1200 in it in their garage without improving the brakes or suspension. I love my max but I also want people to be safe and enjoy this beautiful bike.
