I also want to mention that these tips are particularly useful for interview/talking head shots/voiceover/narration media. I dont suggest doing this for all your clips. For example, I wouldn’t recommend creating compounds/multicams of all your b-roll. Another thing I want to note is that you can just create multicams for your video with audio attached instead of the compound clip method I suggested in the beginning, if you like that better. I apologize for forgetting to mention this in the video! I try to think of as many questions that people may ask and include the answers in as concise of a video as possible, but sometimes things slip my mind 😅 Thanks so much for the continued support on the channel!
Thanks, Dylan. A question: After creating a multicam clip, I adjusted the audio levels inside (I recorded the audio separately), then jumped back to the main timeline. Later on, I realized the volume needed to be louder, went into the multicam clip again, changed the volume settings, but after jumping back to the main timeline... nothing changed. It didn't affect the audio in the main timeline, but only stayed changed in the multicam clip. I'm not sure if I missed a step... Any idea how to remedy this?
@@DavidListenMentalHealth Hey David, that's odd...it should have changed. Are they're more than two audio clips in the Multicam? Perhaps you increased the volume of one but not the other. Other than that, I'm not sure why that'd happen.
Yeah. There’s the audio from the camera but i disabled that. And i made sure i adjusted the right volume…. So even after cutting up the film it should work right? And the settings in the main timeline would show the identical numbers? E.g 50% loudness?
I just always make a Multicam clip every single time. I don't see any reason not to. Later you could even go back and add an angle that is more zoomed in. Also I hate how when you double click on compound clips they disable all the rest of the clip... you only have access to that little window.
Thanks for the great video as always Dylan! I appreciate it. Quick question, at :59 when you do the magnifying for the text, which plugin is that? I feel like all my magnification plugins I use just move the magnified part of the video way too far left or right. It drives me nuts, especially if it’s at the edge of the screen. Thanks again as always!
Scott! You seriously didn't have too man 🥹 thanks so much for the donation. So that plugin is from the original mTuber. I'll put a link and discount code below. But that bugs me too! I've come across quite a few plugin presets that do that and it makes no sense to me. I'm going to have a talk with MVFX and ask why they do that and if they can fix it haha. @@dylanjohndickerson Thanks so much man! I appreciate it, and I'm happy to donate, you've helped my channel out so much! Just bought MTuber and found that zoom/magnify. It's just what I needed. Cheers!
Hi. Very useful information. Can you explain a little more about synching your audio. You said you record your audio separately. Then you sync your audio. Are you saying that in this video you recorded the audio separately then FCP can sync it? You would have to write out all your audio? Sorry for all the questions. I have so much to learn.
Hey there! Thanks so much for watching 😊 And no worries about the questions. So basically I have my camera record the video and I have a better shotgun microphone placed just above my head (out of frame) and it's connected to a Zoom H6 recorder. So I hit record on both the camera and also on the Zoom H6. I connect my camera to my computer and take out the SD card for the audio recorder and plug it into the computer, and then I sync the video and audio by creating a Multicam. Does that answer your questions? By the way, have you seen some of these videos of mine? I think they'd help you out a bunch. ruclips.net/video/Fu1-HVeCWRA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/SENOqO0JjvU/видео.html
Does making it a multi cam clip automatically sync the audio an video? You infer that it does but you don’t actually say it. Or do you have to adjust the placement of the audio in multi cam clip? I guess I should just try it and see what happens! 😂
Hello, John! Is there any chance to have two different aspect ratios in the same video? I make a motovlog and I want to post the images from the motorcycle exactly as they are from the camera and the images taken with the drone in 3840 x 1644 format (something I learned from you). I appreciate your work! Keep up the good work! ✌️
I've tried to avoid compound clips because i've made the mistake before of duplicating a project to make different changes not realizing it ruined my original edit, any work arounds for this?
Yes, take a snapshot of a project instead. Right click the project and select save as snapshot. Those projects, and especially the compound clips in them, will be independent of each other.
This (the 1st tip) is going to be a massive timesaver for me. So many times I've painstakingly copied the effects/colour changes from one segment of a clip I've adjusted, and then hunt for all the other segments, holding ctrl to individually select them wherever they hide, and then pasting once they're selected 🙈 Such a game changer!!! 🎉 Cheers Dylan!!! 💪🏻
You have definitely made me a fan. I’m just starting to get to shoot some of the videos which allow me use some of the things. I’ve been learning at the university of RUclips. Thank you.
Would using Open Clip from the Browser to set audio or color grade be a better idea for attached audio? This way you can edit portions of the clip into the timeline rather than putting the entire clip in and making a compound clip.
@@dylanjohndickerson Select the clip. Clip > Open Clip Top of page 140 of 10.7 PDF User Manual Choose Clip > Open Clip. It used to be called Open in Timeline but at some point they changed it. It Opens a clip from the Browser in a Timeline just as if it were a Compound Clip. You can then apply FX to video or audio and those become part of the source clip that you can then edit into the timeline.
@@seecraig Okay I was a bit blown away at first and shocked I've never heard of this, however after running some tests, if you end up cutting up that clip on your normal timeline and decide you need to change something later on, the adjustment will not be made on all the cut up sections of that clip on the main timeline. Quite a bummer. That would've been such a cool find. I appreciate you letting me know about it though!
@@dylanjohndickerson Thanks for testing and noting that. Oddly there's virtually no information in FCP Help or User Manual on this function. It would seem once editing the clip into a timeline the dependency is immediately broken. While it makes it useful for applying an initial modification (audio fix or base color grade) but not at all for rippling changes. Apple should document this in more detail. It's almost as if it's an immediately independent compound clip.
I watched this video twice, I still don’t see how this is a better solution than the much simpler process of using an adjustment layer, or even multiple versions of adjustment layers that are stacked and enabled/disabled.
Thanks for watching. Adjustment layers can be useful, but they are not the same thing as multicam or compound clips and are not useful for what I was suggesting. Aside from the fact that they adjust everything underneath them, which can be annoying if you have other media that you don’t want to be affected like transitions as an example, they also don’t accept audio adjustments. Plus if you have clips that require different adjustments, you have to cut the adjustment layers so they perfectly fit over those clips. Give multicams/compound clips a shot.
If I need to make any different adjustments to a small section, I just make two cuts inside the compound clip, make the adjustment, and hit m for marker so I know exactly where that cut area is if ever need to go back to it. Easy peasy 😊
I believe you can, but I’m not certain. This is mainly useful for long talking head shots or voiceover/narration. Obviously not something that’s prudent for short b-roll clips.
@@dylanjohndickerson Confirming that compound clips CAN be favorited. Brilliant. I favorite sound bites for long interviews so this will come in CLUTCH. This effectively gives you the same as 'remote grading' in Resolve.
