  • I ordered this mega lot of vintage ho scale locomotives off Ebay back in December. I've been meaning to open this lot up for a long time now and finally decided to do it today. Everything seemed to be in decent shape for the money other than a couple tyco mantuas which got damaged during shipping. There are some really unique models in this lot and I can't wait to get working on them.

#1 is an older Bachmann GP40
#2 B&O F7 looks to be an early Athearn gear drive, look it over, if it's Penn Line or some other brand it will say somewhere
    #3 is a Tyco from roughly 1965
    #4 Bachmann F9
#5 is a Life-Like Proto 1000 Fairbanks Morse, I forget the model designation but looks like the 5-axle engine (2 up front 3 at rear)
    #6 same
#7 is an early Revell that used a rubber band in the drive; 1956, 1957
#8 - Penn Line drive, Athearn shell, Athearn lead truck, sold branded Penn Line, late 50s
    #9 Athearn U30B
#10 Athearn GP35 with the all too common broken mount tabs
#11 Life-Like, drive may be newer than shell
#12 sold by AHM, made by Mehano
    #13 Athearn GP50
#14 1970s Tyco. No real loss, I've never been able to sell those at shows
    #15 same, and same
#16 you got it, Tyco shark .. I once sold a guy one of those and like 10 BN boxcars for $20
#17 Athearn FP45 locomotive lettered Amtrak
Nice haul, a couple pretty rare pieces and a few that are dirt common. Once more the packing is not great but at least IMHO nothing of value was lost there.

@@SMTMainline Sure, I've worked with this stuff so long that it's no big deal to help someone out with what they have. And since they changed the Tony Cook HO Resource all around it's gotten harder to look up things.
As a side thing I kind of collect what they call "tinplate era" HO, which is to say roughly 1955-1965, so I spent some extra time learning about those trains.

      @@adamburnes3655
Nope, EMD FP45. The EMD SDP40F does look a lot like a FP45 so the mixup is totally understandable, like mistaking a F9 for a F7. A train spotting difference is that the FP45 has a porthole in its rear side door while the 40F doesn't. Also, while Athearn does make the 40F today, it did not in the early 1970s which is when the AMTRAK model looks like it was made.

The Athearn units by themselves were well worth the price of the lot. It's a shame that most of the Blue Box units didn't come with handrails. One of the things I like most about the old Athearns is their metal handrails.

Great lot of locomotives! Sounds like it was a good deal for sure. Btw, the Tyco Santa Fe "Warbonnet" F9 that was stamped "Made in Austria" on the bottom truck-plate.....Tyco used AHM parts on their later F9's in the 70's, in particular, the first Spirit of '76 F9s, and from what know, the drive system (which was like an upgraded MU-2/can motor system) was actually produced in AHM factories, hence the "Made in Austria." Not all later-generation Tyco F9s were made with AHM drive parts, though, as Tyco would eventually use the PowerTorque motor in all F9s.

Around 1982 Tyco's train line was sold to IHC and they sourced Mehano products for the sets, including in an irony the Pemco clone of the Tyco streamline caboose. The F9 was a revamp of the FT made for American Train & Track in the late 1960s.

Another awesome lot of locomotives Harrison! Fun fact about the BN GP40-2 that you got, most people call it the tiger stripe scheme because of the orange and black striping on the front of the locomotive, but it's also been referred to as the "Frisco Northern" scheme as this particular paint job appeared shortly after Burlington Northern absorbed the Frisco Railroad in 1980. Very fortunate that your locomotive has that particular paint scheme on it, from what I understand, it wasn't very popular with the BN faithful for several reasons. Kind of a shame really, I actually liked this paint scheme quite a bit mainly because it's so unique!

Well, Harrison, you did say there was a footprint on the box, most likely under foot where the two units were destroyed. Bubble wrap on the sender's part would have helped prevent the destruction. You have some that can be properly restored, and others that should be put out to pasture in the locomotive boneyard as parts for other restorations. The best of the lot may just be the Union Pacific "Serves all the West" switcher by Revell.

When I was a little girl. my older brother had a Union Pacific based train set. Every time I came downstairs there would be trains running around. There were such kinds of UP trains. there were manifest trains. auto rack trains. intermodal trains. and some locals ran on the track. some inspector and passenger trains also ran. there was some steam as well. it was really cool. It went really into detail every one bit. the set was built in 2001 before I was born. My brother was 12 and I was 4 years old. Some of the trains were from the 80s and 90 and they seemed to be in pretty good shape. I am now 14 years old. My brother is now 22. the train set is still there. I just own it now featuring more modern trains. The old trains are currently in the basement but if there’s something happening. Those trains will always run.

What you need for small, loose parts are mini ziplock bags. I think they're sold as jewelry parts bags. They sell them at places like Hobby Lobby. I saw those at the checkout line while waiting. Something like $3.50 for 150.
Now I put everything in those bags. Everything is organized and I don't lose anything. Tiny screws, wheel sets, couplers, all separated by type, size, etc. And for each locomotive that I can't repair in one day all the loose parts go into the bag or if have to store the loco long term in its box with detached/broken small parts it all goes into a bag, labeled and dated.
The bags look small but a lot can fit in them. I've got a whole motor with flywheels in one. My modeling tools and parts box is a fishing tackle box.

Well... That sucks about the Tyco engines. Especially the B unit. I guess you can save them for parts for other Tyco engines. Also, check the frame on the Amtrak FP45. It looks like there is frame damage on the rear, but I wouldn't worry too much on it. FP45 frames are often on Ebay, and the parts are easily swappable to make a good unit out of it.

The first locomotive #6067 is a straight GP40. On top at rear it has 3 fans and the smoke stack is a turbocharger type. Santa Fe never painted their GP40 units in Warbonnet. The Warbonnet Scheme was reserved for their passenger and high priority trains. Open it up, I bet its not a pancake - its a flywheel or center motor. The Athearn undecorated is a GE U28B older drive system. It be nice to have the front painted as Canadian Flag and the rear American flag. The blue B&O is a GP35 - one small fan between two large fans. BN is a GP50 if it has larger grills than the GP40. The Amtrak is a passenger version FP45. They had a steam tank to power the passenger cars in the rear.

the fact only two shells are broken and they are both from the same manufacturer I almost want to say the plastic might be old and dry rotted. So it just kind of just broke apart just from that or what ever caused the damage was just kept to that spot.
