The original version of “Superfly Sister” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on June 2nd, 2024. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the released version from the “Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix” album, it has been revealed that “Superfly Sister” (initially stylized as “‘Supafly Sistas”) was originally written and recorded as far back as 1984 during the Victory sessions at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos, with producer Joe Kehr, alongside Jesse Johnson, former guitarist of The Time, who had quit the band before working with Michael.
The song was rumored to be written and recorded after spending time with his sister LaToya Jackson, during an unauthorized interview in 1983. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version, on & off, from 1984 during the Victory sessions, until it was finalized in 1985, with Joe Kehr. Jesse Johnson, formerly from The Time, had recently quit the band to start his solo career, and was invited by Joe to co-produce the track. Members of The Rag Tag Band were also brought into the studio to provide additional instruments, including a guitar solo from Sarah Greim (aka ‘Syradelic’), and background vocals for the song. The track was primarily a jam session, made into a full song.
While the song runs around 6 minutes, the full-length version is 9 minutes long. This is due to Michael, Jesse and The Rag Tag Band jamming towards the end of the instrumental. Later on during the session, Morris Day and Tamyra Carey, from girl-group Tamyra 6, were also invited for dialogue vocals in the intro/outro. During the breakdown on the 12” extended version, there is a chant for popular backup dancer and choreographer Krista Jasmin, who was a friend of Joe and would later be hired for The Forever World Tour, Michael’s first solo tour that began in late 1987 into 1988. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album.
While they all liked this version, Michael & Quincy felt that the song was ‘too suggestive’ and ‘too bold’ for his image at the time, as well as Quincy felt it was “too on the nose” of the Minneapolis sound. So, they ultimately shelved the song, while Jesse took elements of the song for his single “Be Your Man” for his album “Jesse Johnson’s Revue” in 1985. It became a semi-hit. Meanwhile, this version stayed hidden in the vault and the two artists agreed to never release it.
Michael would later on revisit the song, particularly during the Dangerous sessions, as well as the HIStory sessions, and eventually finished it for the Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix album, a remix album that was insisted by his label Sony to do, despite Michael’s disapproval. It was never released as a single, and remained a deep cut.
