I actually stayed at the Holiday Inn in a neighbouring street a few years ago and visited this grave, amongst other things. I am due back up in Hull in a few weeks and plan a day trip to York whilst up there, so may well visit there again.
I am originally from York and left in 2001 and now live in Norwich. York is ok for tourists but I’ve no desire to return. Very interesting video. Thank you. 😃👍
Thank you for telling us about Dick The pin. Very interesting. Also loved seeing the Minster. Shambles. Also The old walls. York is a wonderful place to see.
Watching this video brought back some great memories from when I visited York in 2009. Turpin's grave was one of the sights I went to, but more than seeing that I think what really stuck with me was the lovely inscription on one of the other graves: "A loving father, a husband dear, a faithful friend lies buried here". I still think about him and wonder who he was in life.
Thank you for your reply Alan I’ve followed you on tiktok and I’ve got a few 1000 followers that I get following you we make you big love your stuff keep up the fantastic work speak soon lee x
I opened up an account on tick tock last year under my name, but I'll open a new account up for motorhome. Beep beep and I'll send you a message no, I think I need a username. Take it easy. Thank you, Alan
I never knew about either of these people playing The character but I've seen Richard but not Tommy Steele. I'll look into that one. But not a big fan of Tommy ever since his Elvis Presley story I don't believe..
Sorry I made a big mistake Tommy Steele didn’t play dick Turpin he played Jack shepherd another British criminal a law breaker in 1720 London. I do apologise for the mistake
Hi again & thanks for yet another interesting & informative upload. York has yellow line's everywhere, no free parking. Did you get a parking ticket? Your passenger side front wheel was over the line. My partner & I will visit as we'd like to see his grave & it's a niice area.
Walked those walls and never knew how close we was to his grave, Even walked the shambles,Went to the museum, Also saw where a canoe went through a pub window when the river flooded, There's a photo of it going through in the pub. Very interesting place to visit.
Wow Alan what a beautiful place and a fascinating story it gives me the shivers when a life is taken in that way must have been dreadful even if he was a bad man god rest his soul ❤️😊👍🏻
Loved that Alan it’s weird as I’ve been thinking like I know your face or are paths as crossed if it was I guess it would of been Blackpool or Manchester as I said I love your content thank you once again Lee barry x
Hello again Lee I don't know. I've been to all those places a few times but thank you for the great comments. I haven't been using my channel for a little while but I will be coming back very soon. All the best mate Alan PS I will look at TT :-)
Guy Fawkes was baptised in the church next to the minster and is a native of York. Another interesting fact is that in York on bonfire night he is not burnt as a Guy etc etc lol. Anyway enjoyed your video.
I didn't know that. Maybe it's because he got so much money from the robin they could afford the lessons because originally it was only the son of a butcher.
Fancy that TB! One of the stories says he's still £100 and £20 from next door 300 years ago....that must be a phenomenal amount. Why didn't he retire quickly?
Great video Alan I will be going to York next year and after watching your video I'll certainly give dick Turpin's grave a visit I love York even spent my honeymoon there Keep the good work up Alan
Hi Allan thanks so much for sharing this video I love the history of dick Turpin real name John Palmer and the history of York and the museum the grave is excellent to visit and the town xx
Fascinating story telling full of facts, York is on my many places to visit will definitely find dick Turpin grave would never of known another great insight well done
He was spotted working in a butchers in long Sutton and taken to York for his offences and hung. We have a road called swapcoat lane we’re he tried to escape with changing his clothes with a local.
This is a great video I found out a few years ago after my cousin did a family tree I am related to dick Turpin so I find everything about him interesting
He was just like James Nevison aka John Nevison or William Nevison (Nickname Swift Nick) an earlier highwayman also executed in York as well in 1682 /1684 not sure of his death check him out
Hello Marion, if you go you can park just inside the wall. Visit the grave and there's some eateries just outside. It's very easy. I hope you make it. Regards, Alan
Dick Turpin went into a pub on the A444 called the Cock Inn...well worth a visit....very original and most atmospheric...Turpins bar and Grill is nearby Dick was always a hero in books and on the street...Legend!
It's surprising that people actually see him as a sort of hero. Highwaymen were violent scum. Where I live theres a story about a Highwayman called William Crew. It's said he was known to be acquainted with Turpin but I don't think the dates tally . He was a notorious highwayman that avoided the noose and became a man of the cloth at a local church in Wotton under edge. After a while, he decided there was more financial gain in robbing people and started robbing people again. It was rumored that he killed somebody which he always denied and eventually he was caught and charged with murder and robberies etc. He was going to hang even without the murder charge. Whether or not he did kill somebody, he denied this but if you were hung for murder, you were hung then medically dissected. This was possibly a good reason to plead not guilty to murder but he was hanged and its said that a huge crash of thunder and lightening happened during his excecution, which people were taking this to mean that God was displeased with an injustice. His body was taken away for dissection and after the body was said to have been buried at the church he worked in, in an unmarked grave. His ill gotten gains were never found (well officially.) Who would have disclosed that they found it. Finding loot is not gonna benefit a person by giving it to the authorities ) it was said he buried or hid them in local woods, which even today would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. It's a well wooded valley.
Dick Turpin rode and stayed in my hometown of Leyland, Lancs, and a road and green is named after him, namely Turpin Green. Also, the house he stayed at has a plaque over the front door.

I never knew about either of these people playing The character but I've seen Richard but not Tommy Steele. I'll look into that one. But not a big fan of Tommy ever since his Elvis Presley story I don't believe..
.'ve seen the pictures of Richard playing Dick Turpin but not Tommy. Of course Sid. James played him in one of the carry-on films also.

Thank you for posting.. excellent job.
Shambles is the olden term for abattoir, its where the slaughterhouses+butchers were. Beautiful city.
He's horse is supposed also buried with him that is why the grave is so big
You make some fascinating videos fella.
I love the research you’ve put into each one-keep that stuff up. 👏
That's much appreciated that you bothered to make the comments Troy it makes it all worthwhile. All the best mate. Alan
Apparently DT had visited more pubs than the VAT man, another notorious bunch of highway robbers. 😂
We also have a pub now called Palmers formally Turpins in long Sutton Lincolnshire
Wow Alan what a beautiful place and a fascinating story it gives me the shivers when a life is taken in that way must have been dreadful even if he was a bad man god rest his soul ❤️😊👍🏻

Hi EB that's nice i really enjoyed making it all the best
York is beautiful. I've been a few times. I didn't know about this though.
First time i've seen the graveyard since rhe family holiday in 1979. Slightly bigger than i remember but the hedges round it stick out in the memory.
I've been to his grave myself years ago very interesting video 👍
Well done TUE thank you.

I thought he was buried at my bank😆
Interesting fact is that he learned to write, not your average villain was Mr Turpin because that skill was very thin on the ground back then.
I didn't know that. Maybe it's because he got so much money from the robin they could afford the lessons because originally it was only the son of a butcher.
He came to my hometown in Essex. Raided a farmhouse and stole sheets and silverware.
Fancy that TB! One of the stories says he's still £100 and £20 from next door 300 years ago....that must be a phenomenal amount. Why didn't he retire quickly?
The farm next to were I grew up in Essex was called deeks supposed to have been changed from dicks. Named after Mr Turpin.
Dodgy boiler x ha ha x go nicking in Essex x

No Betty Turpin was my Mum.
I've lived in york my whole life (24 years) nice place to live not cheap though. Guy fawkes house is very close to the minster
Very interesting place man not nice man who who was hanged for evil doings thanks for sharing this great channel 😮😢
As a york boy laughed at this
his real name was richard leslie upton.
He was spotted working in a butchers in long Sutton and taken to York for his offences and hung. We have a road called swapcoat lane we’re he tried to escape with changing his clothes with a local.
If his body was taken by "The Restoration Men" , what's in the grave exactly ?
❤💯👍
Not forgetting Carry On Dick... Now there's a tribute to the man!... What happened to his horse Black Bess?
Didnt know Guy Fawkes was born there. X
Really I didn't know that. No thank you G
This is a great video I found out a few years ago after my cousin did a family tree I am related to dick Turpin so I find everything about him interesting
Hello steel, I did the video of dick turpin. If you want to watch it in York, there's a commemorative grave. Interesting. Thank you, Alan
He was just like James Nevison aka John Nevison or William Nevison (Nickname Swift Nick) an earlier highwayman also executed in York as well in 1682 /1684 not sure of his death check him out
The Guy fawkes pub I know it well
t wouldn't be easy to do Guy Fawkes
its a hotel not a pub
@@jay123596 well done
@@jay123596 I do apologize a hotel then it has a bar in it though.😄
@@jay123596 It is called the Guy Fawkes Inn, so is a pub with a restaurant and rooms to let.
Great vid mate thanks, Turpin is a cult hero but in real life was a scoundrel hence why they hanged him !
I agree Phil. Thank you
That’s the way a lot of graveyards are in America or some flat and some upright graves , I suppose it allows for more bodies to be buried
Was he real!!! Amazing. Thought he was a legend x
Absolutely! He was real but I know what you mean. It could have been another Robin Hood 👍😅
I never knew dick Turpin was buried in York, thank you I will visit next time 👍🏻

Hi what you doing
These days it’s our government’s that want you to “stand and deliver “ soon,, everything you have
Exactly Bob where surrounded 😜
Was Dick Turpin buried with his horse
No. It is not even sure he is actually buried where that stone is.
Shambles means slaughter house, we have one in Worcester, probably most old cities also have their own “Shambles”😎

Why do you keep saying unfortunately the man deserved to be caught and tried for his crimes so when you say unfortunately he was caught I don’t agree
Unfortunately it's not a big deal really is it? It's just a phrase and I probably meant unfortunately for him, but I wouldn't worry I'm not.
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep thank you for the reply love your videos so informative 👍
York has plenty of pay for car parks matey

I don't know were you are from but it's considered very disrespectful walking on grave stones when in grave yards
Sometimes, it’s unavoidable.
