  • Here is a partial recording of Judy Garland's recording session for The Wizard of Oz. Taking place on October 7, 1938, this is the recording session where she would first record what would be her signature song, "Over the Rainbow."
The takes have been mostly synced to the film's final footage. Editing on the final take remains unfinished. Originally intended to be uploaded on the now defunct Rare Media Archive of Musical Theare channel, the video was instead rendered and uploaded, in this unfinished form, to my personal channel ( / justinhoskie ) to honor the anniversary of this recording.

Never heard this before. Fascinating. The final cut was perfection to my ears, but obviously a lot of hard work and expertise went into getting there to create perhaps the greatest piece of cinema magic in the whole history of movies.

This beautiful, classic Academy Award Winning Song recorded on October 7, 1938, is the best version ever! This song truly belongs only to Judy Garland! I am so glad the slower version was used in the final movie! Both versions are excellent!

It doesn't get any better than this! Judy Garland at only 16 who portrayed Dorothy Gale and Terry the female Cairn Terrier who portrayed Toto in the 1939 MGM classic movie The Wizard of Oz is pure movie magic!

Amazing--love to jump to the version they used at 0:42 or so, but interesting to have the false start, as well and see that the work/different attempt(s) that went into getting the 'perfect' version that come down through the ages.

I’m not entirely sure but I think what they did was combine takes five and six to make the cut that appeared in the movie. Sounds like they took the "Somewhere over the rainbow, wayup high" in the beginning from take five and then took that part out of take six and left the rest of it.

I agree with @MaskedMan66, but I wonder if it could also possibly have been Victor Fleming, the Director of the film. I heard in an interview with Judy on a talkshow, I can’t remember which, that Victor Fleming was always up on a boom microphone. I don’t have any vision so I can’t tell you if there’s anything going on on the screen but it does sound like there is somebody using a microphone, so it could be him.
