  • Harold Arlen composed the music and Yip Harburg penned the lyrics to Over the Rainbow, which was written in 1939 for The Wizard of Oz. The film was about young Dorothy Gale flying from her home in Kansas via a tornado to the colorful, strange world of Oz. The song was originally sung by actress and musician Judy Garland and won the Oscar for Best Original Song. For her entire life, Garland was associated with the song. It was voted the 20th century’s No. 1 song by the RIAA.
    the lyrics by Yip Harburg:
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
    There's a land that I heard of
    Once in a lullaby
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
    Really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly
    Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh, why can't I?
    If happy little bluebirds fly
    Beyond the rainbow
    Why, oh why can't I?
