  • You do not always need a huge air compressor to winterize and blow out your underground sprinkler irrigation system.
Do it with a small compressor!
** DISCLAIMER - do this at your own risk. This is a Demonstration video of what I do with my system. Your results may vary! **

I was surprised you didn't mention or adjust your outflow psi on your compressor to around 50 PSI . I've used a small compressor for many years with no issues but was always told not to go past 50 PSI or you could damage the line. Yes, you stated to give a little air when blowing out the zone, but your compressor is hitting over 100 psi when it turns off and a novice may just open the compressor value all the way which may cause an issue. Also, I didn't notice if you had a backflow valve. I have one and these smaller compressors a lot of times don't have enough of pressure to get past these backflow valves. I had to put in a "T" after the backflow valve, then connect the compressor and turn off the backflow valve. This allows more pressure without losing it in the backflow valve. Just a tip to help someone. Thanks for your video!

Thanks. Yes around 50 psi is ideal especially at first when there is water in the lines. After that it’s just short bursts of air that may spike for a second or two then drop rapidly.
The backflow is next to the shutoff inside house. Air is introduced downstream outside.

Ahh the mystery of the backflow is solved lolo. Now I see why you were able to easily blow out from your present location. All the best!

When you think, you have finished blowing them out, go to the lowest pop-up head. lift it up using a small screwdriver, put vice grips around the pop-up part of the sprinkler to hold it up like you would do when you are cleaning the sprinkler head filter, remove the sprinkler head and filter and the blow it out one more time with the lowest head removed. I get as much or more additional water removed doing this as is removed doing the original blow out.

why was the 3rd valve abandoned?

How deep are your lines. Mine are @ 12" and didn't figure I needed to mess with it but it'd make for some good insurance

They are deep but it is cold here. Probably freezes 6 feet down

Where did you find that ball valve that you have at the outlet of your air compressor? Was that something you retrofitted?
