Totally, this is normal sound. Some moment of 'metal' tik-tik-tik were fixed after 2014 (LCI). As example, 'skirt pistons' (i dunno how name it techlically correctly). Also, I hear broken westgate's damber. But same noise you can hear on the cars with 30-40k meliage. It can be fixed locally without change turbo as recommended from BMW. At least, in my country we do that (300usd). And next 50-70r km you can foeget abut this problem. Globally, the sound is normal. This is n20b20,
The infamous wastegate rattle. Nothing to worry about. Full disclosure, I don't know everything about N20/26s, I prefer the I6s like the N54/5 and S55. I don't know how mechanically skilled you are, but wanted to make sure you're aware of how involved the process is to replace a turbo. I've never worked on an N20/6, but I can tell you that out of the work I've done on N54s and N55s, turbos are a bitch and a half. They'll more than likely be a little easier on the N20/6 because there's more room to work with, but you're looking at 8 hours on a 6cyl. If you go with a hybrid turbo instead of refurb, make sure you have proper fueling and closely monitor oil pressure--the achilleas heel.
Normal sound. I saw the comment saying that the N20 engine sounds like a diesel, couldnt agree more. 😂 N20 engines are “naturally” louder meaning those clicking noises are normal.
My n20 makes the same noise and I don’t have the cover on it… somebody tried to tell me the motor is bad but I know it’s not as I drive it everywhere… I do have a wastegate issue so should I change just the wastegate or wastegate and turbo ?
I don't think I've experienced that before? I suppose if its the chain it might be the slack being taken up. I think you can do a rough check of the chain through the oil cap. And there is a tool to check any stretch properly.
@@42stars Yes, F30 sounds like that coming from a factory. What you hear are fuel injectors. This engine works like a diesel engine, because of direct injection. Once RPMs come to 700 it's more quieter.
@@42stars I have a 2017 F30 with 74k miles. It makes the same rattle but since I don't have any other noises (the whining on acceleration and revs) I was told it wasn't it and the clicking is just the noisy N20 being itself
Ill have to check this evening but from what I can see on the video both hoses are connected. Looking at the left side of the engine cover the left hose goes back and the right one goes down.
I did check this. For whatever reason the rear vacuum pipe is split and joined with a Tee with one port blanked off. Not sure is this is for an accessory not installed or just a repair with a part on hand.
That’s not correct, I have the exact same engine and there a vacuum line that goes across the engine and connects to that t to the left. It goes from the middle of engine and splits off to the front left and and back left
I just looked it up and the t that splits to across the engine that I didn’t see connected is actually for the exhaust flap, if you look up a pic of it on google just look up n20 vacuum lines and you’ll find a n55 with the same vacuum line setup and it shows it’s for the exhaust flap. It’s prob a mod done by someone to make the car sound louder and leave the flap open which is prob fine because it’s still pulling vacuum when close off.
@@Lexdatoka maybe thats something on the m sport model or twin exhaust where I think I've read in the past about exhaust flap control. I believe most people would code it open. Mine is a standard sport single port exhaust so I would guess it never had anything connected.
Totally normal. I could not detect any unusual noises here. The N20 Is a petrol engine that sounds like a diesel... Get used to it lol There is no audible pulling of the chain or knocking sounds here or any wastegate rattle. It's just an N20 being an N20 ie. Loud.
Hi Matt I came across your video & I hear the same exact knocking sound which appears at 1:10 when the RPM drops below 1000. I bought my car in 2018 used with only 6k miles F10 / 528i -2016. I was worried from the knocking sound & each time I take it to bmw for oil change they keep saying it is normal for the past 4 years, just a month ago ( mileage only 12K) they told me I need to replace the chain guides which was done at bmw but no change in the noise, I am still hearing the same knocking.
Unfortunately still no clear answer from BMW, the knocking I hear is coming from the back side of the engine near the firewall (4th Cylinder) from the right side of the engine.
I think the injectors are part of the noise. I took it into BMW and they said the noise went away while on idle and they manually operated the wastegate. I haven't experienced any issues with the car since this video.
Apparently its from play in the wastegate in the turbo. BMW only wanted to quote for a full turbo replacement at a price of £2600. I had the timing chain and guide replaced under warrenty 2 years ago. Unless the car throws an error for low boost ill probably leave it as the noise cant be heard from inside the car. Worst case I'll have a go at removing the turbo myself and send it to be refurbished and get the wastegate done at the same time.
@@mattw4358 did you have a problem with the timing chain, i still have 10k on the warranty or a year left, can you just request it be serviced as preventative maintenance or does some have to be done for them to approve the job?
@@lakergamer248 I did have an issue with the timing chain that caused the engine management light to come on. The first thing they did was replace the chain and the tensioner. Unfortunately the issue caused low oil pressure and damage to the engine block which was replaced shortly after doing the chain. @@mattw4358 Do you know if BMW in the UK extended the warranty as long as North America? Same here, its just normal (terrible) wastegate play. Im considering the spring fix atm: loading the wastegate shaft with a spring to stiffen the system
Pistons need to be replaced or you may replace with a new engine, cause they are knocking the cylinders. If your N20 in most cases is used in crowded traffic or similar traffic circumstance, you may encounter this nightmare in 200km.
I need to add a new video really. I haven't had any error codes over the past year but the noise defiently seems worse.
Waste gate?

Could also be the timeing chain. these motors are notorious for them. Mine had the same start up sound it went a way after it was replaced.
Sounds like wastegate rattle to me. Timing-chain noise is a metallic high-pitched sound that follows the revs.
Timing chains on these sound like a supercharger when they go out they whine hard at 2000 rpm you can hear the wastegate flapping around in there
