Great game for Mario with the 5 goals but still think the 5 he scored against the Rangers is the greatest single player performance ever in an NHL game. He scored all 5 in different ways, a shorty, an even strength, a powerplay, a penalty shot, and the OT winner. Was never done before and I don't see it ever happening again.
Like everything else in the USA today , today's hockey has become soft and a special teams game. Everything is a freakin penalty!! Havent been to a hockey game in 5 yrs when I seen what was going on. They made it softer and scoring is down. In the physical era you had multiple 50 goal scorers and more. Now your lucky if you get one!!
And somehow they lost to the freaking Florida Panthers in the conference finals and missed what would have been a great Stanley cup with the avalanche.
@@The_Bad_Guy. They lost Francis before the series, Vanbriesbrook stood on his head and the Refs royally screwed the Pen in each game at Florida. Game 7, Veebo stole that game. Shame the refs f'd them, it would have been a great finals.
@@sammmy4495 oh I remember it vividly. Vanbiesbrouck was a wall in that series. I still thought that even without Francis the penguins still should have taken them but top goaltending and game killing defensive systems always hurt these high flying pens teams. Leroux took full advantage of some luck. Too bad he’ll go down a big puss for cowering in RD. 2 and and then dancing his way to no fight in RD 3. I’d have liked to see him back up his first Twist fight to the trash talkers. Unfortunately he seemed to have given them more fuel.
Polk High: Let's see now... Leroux had some tape around his hand (and *not* across his knuckles), and Twist was on 'roids. Hmmm... so whom would you say had the biggest advantage?
@@motherloverjones6008 Slow or pause the footage and you'll see the tape didn't even come up to his knuckles, let alone cover them. If they called a penalty for tape, it had to be that one finger on his left hand despite throwing rights exclusively. The cut was from Leroux punching the helmet while the jersey was over Twist's head. The edge of the helmet sliced a nasty line through the skin. Twister wanted payback considering that the cut came during a flurry when he was on his knees.

That was a fairly tough Pittsburgh team, with François Leroux, Dave Roche and gutsy Chris Tamer taking care of the rough stuff.
Neil Wilkinson was also a pretty tough dude as well 👍
"Let's go to Rob Ramage."
"Someone got hurt, back to you."
Isn't that hilarious? I had to put that in.
“Sh*t’s f*cked, yo. Back to you!”
Ramage had to be freshly retired. He looked nervous as heck too.
Leroux putting on the foil!
Just thinking that! LOL
I was at this game! Mario five goals, the day after his son Austin was born!!!!
He was so good. Amazing Player.

that taped hand got Leroux suspended...
Good.
He got the match penalty for throwing the lineman off of his back.
Leroux was a dirty goon
Nope. You can have a taped thumb and hand, just not knuckles. Twist got pumped, deal with it.
I’d say it was worth it
I wish hockey was still this tough. More exciting

The other guy got in trouble for that fight
6:05 Blues announcer Ken Wilson used his traditional "Oh, baby" to Mario Lemieux for scoring his fifth goal that night. Well deserved and fair.
That's crazy to hear an opposing broadcast call goals for the other team like that.
@@The_Bad_Guy. You have to bring out the best when Super Mario comes to town.
Craig McTavish still showing off the lettuce in 96. Last guy to not wear a helmet in the NHL. 1:03
Yep. He refused after some type of vehicular manslaughter charge or something. Last player grandfathered around the role.

I hope Jagr recovered from that Thunderous Cross check by Baron. 🙆 😱 🙊

That 95-96 Penguins team could’ve won the cup if not for their 7th-worst defense and that was the one season they had Zubov.
The jerseys were great back then.
Good old days when you could run the damn goalie. We need to get back to that. Leave the crease at your own peril.
