There's a story in the late 90s called "Dumskullz" that actually shows Dredd's face from a profile view (It was a one-shot comedy story about a mentally ill citizen imagining tiny deformed versions of himself piloting his head.)
being old enough to have purchased the first issue of 200ad, the one thing that sticks in my mind is, Judge Dredd didn't appear in the comic until issue 2. The portrayal of Rico in the 1995 film was pretty good, but not great. The portrayal of Dredd was abysmal. Dredd's face is never seen in the comics, and he is very rarely seen without his helmet on. This was explained by the writer as basically, the law is faceless, hence no face shots of Dredd. If Dredd was seen without his helmet, then, usually, his face would be covered by shadow, or obscured in some way.
I recall Rico well but only from his first appearance when he is killed by Joe. The line 'he ain't heavy he's my brother' stuck in my memory, 40 years ago it was published.
Rico: I betrayed this... Your council's experiment which failed, in you. I was your brother, your blood, your friend. Who betrayed who? When are you gonna stop being a goddamn slave and grow up? That's your birthright, that's your family. I'm your family, I'm the only family you ever had. Now choose!
Mr H Reviews I humbly apologize for mentioning that God awful movie on your excellent site. I personally far prefer the movie that Karl Urban did and wouldn't mind seeing a sequel
lol its all good man, kidding around of course. yeah the dredd 2012 was incredible, they are currently producing a tv show so hopefully we will get a similar aesthetic
Thank you for the excellent quality of the story telling, it really takes me back to when I originally read these fantastic stories. I collected, and still have the first 12ish years of 2000AD comics and now thanks to your videos i dug them out and I’ve started to read them again so thank you very much
Never knew the Rico of the comics, my god I gotta say it’s hunting, the implants and all the skull changes he had because of the “titan treatment” my god
Truth? I learned about Dreads brother from the movie. Such a waist of talent. But as it stands, ether die a hero or live Long enough to see your self become the villain.
I always wondered: Why did Rico's badge say 'Rico' but Joseph's said 'Dredd'? I just assumed it was to make it easier on the reader, but was there some canonical reason?
I've always liked the stories involving the Dredd brothers, but one thing that has always bugged me is why don't both of their badges say Dredd? Every badge always uses a surname except for Rico.
Mr.H! Did you see the "Superfiend" Judge Dredd animated fan film? I think you would enjoy it though the animation does gets a bit crazy at times. Though it's cool to see Rico in animation (along with Judge death)
This is an excellent video, lots of detail. I was an avid reader as a child and my brother bought me a novel where Dredd actually does kill his brother and becomes evil. Our Dredd ends up in that universe and has to battle the cybernetically enhanced Judge Dread. A fantastic read, it's still in my house somewhere, hidden from my children and dog because they've both tried to destroy it Can't remember the name but I highly recommend you read it friend H.
What about the allusions suggesting Dredd is having second thoughts about the Judge System? His pondering on the last words of Fargo, that it was never meant to last forever. Reckon he'll be thinking hard on Rico's motivations....
Been a while since I read it but first time I saw Rico was in story were he and few others came from an alternate demention were they killed their dread to the one we're dread had killed them all or least beat them have you heard about that one?
Rico and Dredd are both (clone in some versions) bothers so they should use the same surname on their badge, but this is not true in the comics. Either this is a continuity error/plot hole in the comics, or ( in universe) Justice Department gives different names to member of the same family to prevent family networks and nepotism. But why give Dredd the family name and his younger brother a random first name? Psychologically this could be damaging to the younger brother since they must be less than a few weeks different in age. In later stores other clones of Dredd were given other names. This point I cannot figure out.
david james Because 'Judge Joseph' is a hell of a lot less intimidating and Rico had proven himself the superior of the two early on, thus earning a right to a more individualized title. Also, it could simply be a contrivance on the writer/artist's part, allowing both them and the audience to keep better track of who's who.
Great video..I thought I had read all of the Rico material, but have missed some of this, particularly Rico meeting Vienna's mother on Titan.. What comic/story/issue should I look for this in? I'm guessing it's a megazine story... Subscribed...
mr H just a idea with all this talk of the judge dredd tv show rebellion should talk to the people who make the fan film judge minty and strontium dog , they show what can be done with a low budget and a lot of love for the subject matter, good video by the way mr H .
loved it never read or seen any of the movies I'mma definitely check them out now. what woul you say is the better Dreed movie the original or the rebooted version?
Mr. H have you ever heard of or seen the movie Hardware? I found while back that is was short story in the Dredd universe, bring this up because think it will be interesting topic to talk about.
It's actually interesting how Rico's face with all those implants is one closest glimpses we see of Dredd's actual face.
Technically speaking, Fargo is what both Joe and Rico would look like since they're clones of him. Still true what you said though

You forgot to mention his incarnation in the film "laaaaaaaaaaaaaw"
"RIP HIS ARMS AND LEGS OFF, SAVE HIS HEAD FOR LAST, I DONT WANT HIM TO MISS ANY OF IT!!!!"

I'm 37 right now. I doubt the Judge Dredd comic story is from the late 70's.
@@willybshreddn3794 I was collecting 2000AD when that story ran, it was around 1995/1996 unless the story was a reprint or a retelling??
Great line from a fantastic song.
Wicked story Mr h . I'm really enjoying these videos .
glad you are ross!
Great, great villain. A clone of the hero, but better. The Titan treatment... love it all, great story. Thanks for sharing!
-Dredd: You bertrayed the law!!!

lol on Rico
Mr H Reviews wasn't Rico the main bad guy character for Judge Dredd in the Sylvester Stallone movie several years back?
we don't speak of that film here....... lol but yes he was, that was a comic adaptation.

Finally, thank you for covering Rico! He's my 2nd favorite villan of the series, next to Judge Death! 😁 👏👍

Great vid. Glad I subscribed last week. Good variety too

Great video. You certainly have a voice for this kind of narrative
i need a movie made about this
Dredd: I AM the law
Rico: And I AM the Judas to your system
Judge Mr H. He reviews and analyze your crimes before he passes judgment. The sentence is....Watching Predators in cargo pants dancing.
LOL
Wat?
How come people hates the '95 movie, when they really used so much history and facts about many characters.
2 words. Helmet off.
Sylvester Stallone was an awful choice and took the helmet off Karl Urban done a much better job.
Cool video.
I loved dredd when I grow up
Mr.M , I love your videos keep up the good work
Quickly becoming my new favourite RUclipsr mate, keep it up!
I love how you say THE LAAAW

wonder why it said rico on his badge rather than dredd.. yano same second name so it should have been what was on the badge right?

Its their last names.
@@SmeeHal Then Eckhart is wrong? The start of the video states "Rico Dredd, the brother of Judge Joseph Dredd."
@@atraxisdarkstar I guess I stand corrected. Im guessing it makes sense, but Dredd is the last name.
I've always liked the stories involving the Dredd brothers, but one thing that has always bugged me is why don't both of their badges say Dredd? Every badge always uses a surname except for Rico.
Probably to better tell them apart.
They serve in the same district, so it's probably to tell them apart
I like the judge Dredd content keep it up m8 very intriguing
thanks man, I've been enjoying doing it as part of branching out content wise, Nice to get back to my childhood and get it out there to newer people!
He's such a huge part of the Dredd mythos considering he was only orignially in one story!
One of your best vids yet. Love Dredd stuff. Hoping beyond hope producers come up with enough money to hire Karl Urban as Dredd for this project🤞
The two Dredd picture being shown is actually Dredd and the young new clone who took the name Rico as drawn by Carlos Edquerra
You should do a review of the madness of Judge Cal.
danm this guys voice is fittingly deep
Yay! :)
also, here is Dredd's face reveal, rather obviously
very nice, good job
He ain't heavy. He's my brother.
Awesome video
Mr.H!
Did you see the "Superfiend" Judge Dredd animated fan film? I think you would enjoy it though the animation does gets a bit crazy at times. Though it's cool to see Rico in animation (along with Judge death)
I had heard of him. Kraken was a far more interesting evil Dredd twin. The part I'd want to find out more about is the daughter, Vienna Dredd.
I like the panel where Dredd hold his brother in his arm. It show that even if he is the cold embodiment of Justice, he is still an human being
Your voice is great for narration.

Sounds like the Dark Judges. Judge Death is essentially Dredd from another dimension who killed everyone in their dimension.
You should do one on the other Rico..sent to Texas City, this clone from the same batch as his namesake and Joe came back to Mega City One..
Why does Rico's badge say 'Rico' instead of 'Dredd'?
To differentiate
Dredd looks like Clint Eastwood he's basically was inspired by Dirty Harry Callahan from the dirty Harry films .
Armand Assante sent me here.
Will you be doing any more Dredd Storylines? and Where could one find a few trades to get into Dredd?
Didn't Rico's badge also say Dredd? Since they use the surname? Some of these picture might be of Judge Rico, a different character.
I know who judge rico is buddy, but no rico did have a different badge to his brother.

though you're right to question it! traditionally its always the surname
