  • The latest instalment of the Guitar Showcase Series, Today we are taking a look at my Fender AVRI '62 Jazzmaster. I've owned it since May 2013, and it's been my main recording/gigging guitar ever since I brought it home. It's been used and abused (it was almost mint when I got it). It's had some changes since stock (Full Mastery Hardware and BlackBobbin Lollar Pickups)

    Bought my first JM a few months ago. Mexican made road worn that had been hanging in my local music store forever. Loved it straight away. It's its own thing (played Teles for years). Tried some Antiquity 1 pickups and it's just perfect. Stock pickups were American Vintage 65 and were BRIGHT, which I liked at first until I started listening to older JMs. I put a Mastery Vibrato on it because the stock Fender one was awful but I have no plans for a Mastery bridge. I put Locktite on every screw in the bridge and haven't had any strings pop out. I read somewhere that the Mexican ones had the vibrato assembly moved toward the headstock 1/4" so they could make JMs and Jaguars on the same jig and that might have given it just enough additional break angle to keep the strings in the saddles. Great video!

    I have had one since I bought it new in 2003. Mine is Olympic White turned yellow. I don't have a Mastery Bridge but the stock bridge. I feel no need to change the bridge. The original works perfectly fine.
    As far as bridges goes my fave is the Mosrite bridge. The feel and sound is the best.

    Sweet video man! Awesome playing and love your tone. I, unfortunately, missed the boat to grab an AVRI '62. Being in Australia, everything is a bit harder to get and a stupid amount more expensive. I settled on an approx 1994 Fender Japan 62 Reissue and I love it, but looking to replace the pickups. Your setup with the Black Bobbins would be a great option. They sound killer man. Anyway thanks for sharing, there aren't too many channels doing what you are doing particularly with your tone and style which is quite similar to my own. Keep it up mate!

      Thanks for check it out, those MIJ reissues are killer so no doubt you’ve got a good one on your hands. Highly recommend those BB pickups. Love them

    Love your videos. Is the Mastery vibrato arm unit you istalled the normal model or the polished one? I am conidering bying one for my jazzmaster but i am not sure about the difference in terms of visual impact. I already installed the mastery bridge but I noticed that the low E string is buzzing on a screw behind the bridge so i am considering shimming the neck to get a better angle. What is the suggested angle to get the best out of the mastery bridge? Thanks!!!

    • @williamjohnbennettiii
      @williamjohnbennettiii  Год назад

      I’ve got the standard non polished version. I thought with my guitar being beat up the polished might look a bit odd.
      For the neck angle, it really depends on your exact guitar. I recently shimmed mine. I ordered a .25 and 0.50 shim from Stew Mac to try out and ended up using both.

    Ouahhhh
    One of thé best sound of jazzmaster i hear.
    Love !!
    I have a 2005 avri jasmaster 62 to.
    And i love it.
    Original pickup IS good to.
    Can you tell me the différence with stock pickup ?

    • @williamjohnbennettiii
      @williamjohnbennettiii  3 года назад

      The original pickups are really nice, I find these ones just to have a bit smoother high end, and a bigger bottom end.

    Great video and playing! Question for you - Are you running 1meg pots? It sounds so warm compared to my 62 AVRI with Lollar Pickups and 1meg pots. Is your tone rolled off a bunch? Any tips? Great job!

    • @williamjohnbennettiii
      @williamjohnbennettiii  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Shawn! I am running the stock 1meg pots in mine. Tone is all the way up as well. The Blackbobbin Lollar JMs are definitely warmer than the standard ones, so I think that’s likely biggest reason for the change you’re hearing compared to yours. I was told they are supposed to be similar to running the regular Lollars with 250k pots

      @@williamjohnbennettiii Curious if you ever went with the Black Bobbin wiring harness.
      I took your advice and bought the Black Bobbins and they definitely are darker. I also got the 280k pots and might need to go back to 1meg to get more brightness back.

    Hi everyone! I did some homework, is it correct that this is one of the best jazzmasters one can buy nowadays? I'm in Amsterdam, and can currently get one of these (also with mastery bridge) for 1750 euro's. is that an OK deal? what are the known problems with this model? and how to check if its legit/for real an avri?

  • @jomarthegreat1

    Hello! Did you need to change the thimbles in order to install the mastery bridge?

    • @williamjohnbennettiii
      @williamjohnbennettiii  2 года назад

      Nope, it will fit with the originals, but the mastery ones are a snugger fit which is ideal

  • @DelScully
    @DelScully 2 года назад

    why'd you go for a mastery trem as well? I got a mastery bridge on my jazzmaster but am also considering switching out the trem as the arm doesn't stay put on it right now.. Is it worth it?

    • @williamjohnbennettiii
      @williamjohnbennettiii  2 года назад +1

      I was really impressed with how much of a difference the bridge made, so when they announced the trem I decided to try it too. It’s a lot smoother feeling, and the bar stays wherever you want it to

    • @DelScully
      @DelScully 2 года назад

      @@williamjohnbennettiii Sweet! Thanks for the reply. The bridge is wicked forsure! I still get all the beautiful overtones even with it on, will forsure be looking into the trem!

    what was wrong with the original pickups?

    • @williamjohnbennettiii
      @williamjohnbennettiii  Год назад

      Sorry I missed this! But if you ended up
      Scoring that used one, there’s nothing wrong with the pickups at all. I had just hit a point where I was curious what kind of change would happen with a different set in there
