  • Guitar cover of "Eulogy" by TOOL with on-screen tabs - learned by ear, multiple live performances and other covers.
    Hope you enjoy the video! Please post your suggestions! :)
    Eulogy has been requested so many times in the comments, so here we go! Such a masterpiece of a song and an essential piece in Ænima.
    This one always hits home. One of the tracks that will always make me come back to this album again and again. I know that according to some sources, the lyrics are not really directed towards Jesus, but more towards the founder of a well known sect. But Eulogy (and Ænima in general) have certainly shaped my opinion on religion and beliefs in general.

    Another song to learn from the Ænima album. Thank you sir for providing such an awesome video with a great layout with the tabs and everything. Makes learning these songs very friendly and not too much of a hassle.
    Just simply watch, take a segment to learn, watch the tabs, pause, play, rewind, play repeat until I'm confident I got it down (this goes for everyone else too if you're here for the same reason I am 😎) , then move to the next segment. Eventually do that enough and boom, now I got the whole song down. Very awesome work man, keep on making those fantastic videos my good sir 👍🏼😎

      You all are gonna shit your pants when you learn what those musical stabs and motif/melody are.
      I’ll save you the trouble: If you saw Tool live on the Ænima tour, you got to see Maynard showing his pistol skills by double-tapping a megaphone while singing the melody that shows up in the breakdown (“You’ve claimed all this time…”). So that’s not an overdubbed guitar or programmed percussion as some have said: It’s just Maynard, his megaphone, and some reverb/delay (but he does tap the megaphone trigger twice to sound both notes - that is not a delay effect).

  • @dclarkmusic

    I had no idea that’s how he made the sound at the beginning! I always thought it was some kind of exotic percussion instrument.

    I can 100% confirm this is how the verses are played. I went to the Tool Music Clinic in Philly and they actually ran through this song. I play it live in our Tool tribute, and I've seen so many covers where that riff is wrong. Seeing him play it from a few feet away was a huge bonus trying to figure out that riff. Perfect job man!
    He also does the pull down technique on the riff that ends on 1. 0-2-2-2-0-3-3-0-5-5-0-3-Pull through technique on 1

    • @MaxNiessl
      @MaxNiessl  4 года назад +5

      Thank you! I was actually really wondering whether he was pulling through from the second fret on the main verse riff. Hard to hear on the record and almost no live footage. Glad to get some assurance on that riff. Cheers 🤘

      @@MaxNiessl Yeah when I saw him go from the 2, to a quick open and pull down on 3, I was so happy to FINALLY figure it out. You did it perfect! It's funny cause as he was talking to us in the music clinic he discussed his pull down/through trick and how the guys in the band make fun of him for using it ALL THE TIME. After he showed it to us, he used the riff in Eulogy I talked about above, and seeing the pull down on the 1st fret to end the riff was his prime example. I'd never have figured that one out, it's more subtle than all the other riffs he does that, weird he chose that one to say that's what he does it on, lol.
      Also getting to stand where he does and see his entire setup was so priceless. Couldn't take pics without our phones obviously, but I saw it all. They played to 150 of us like it was a full stadium tour crowd. He was asked a lot about his setup, and in typical Adam fashion he deflected and kept a lot secret. He wouldn't answer his pickup question, someone even asked about his volume pots, he politely danced around that one. A lot of parts that you would think he boots with EQ or his Micro Amp, he doesn't. His pickups are absolutely custom, and not the Super Distortion he is now claiming publicly. They may have started out as those, but the A and high D stings sing so loud they have to be modded. Always keeping us guessing.
      I have a 1980 Custom SIlverburst and had a talk with Seymour Duncan on my bridge pickup. They said they can't make me "His" pickup, but they could get me close. I have a Custom SH5 they tweaked a bit, sounds great in my setup, LOVE it.

      @@mikebrennan9633 That's so cool, man! And I'm just here, wanting to see them live for once. I hope they are still doing a Fear Inoculum tour here in Germany after the pandemic. I also think that the secrecy in Tool makes Tool what it is. I really love the fact that even all of us Tool fanatics don't know everything :D

    • @rprides1007
      @rprides1007 4 года назад

      That's weird because I saw them live in '98 second row from the stage and Adam was using the pull through technique on the second fret during the verses. But he would pull it hard - at least a half bend - which is I think where people get the third fret from. It always stuck in my head because every tab/cover I've ever seen has people playing it on the third fret, but that day I saw it up close he was most certainly pulling a hard second fret.

    Excellent as always. So great to finally have some verification on the pull-through techniques on this. Sounds so much better than the other way. Also that outro riff was new to me! Verified you are correct on the live videos, so thanks for letting me finally play the song correctly after 23 years! I'd like to request "jimmy" as the part around 4:21-4:35 has always been too difficult to decipher and I think only you can rise to the challenge. I really like the addition of the pedal display, but I think you should go one further and potentially display the approximate volume/tone knob setting during areas where Adam rolls back on the volume or tone. Though honestly, these are so good it doesn't matter. Thank you so much for the dedication. These songs mean so much to so many, and it is great to see them done this much justice!

      Thank you! I was also thinking about adding a volume knob display, but it's one extra thing that I have to add - extra time that flows into the video. We'll see! I'd love to learn Jimmy one day :)

    Man. I learned that song (or parts of it :D ) with the help of a tab with good rating, however, the rhythm in the verse always sounded off. I couldn't put my finger on it. But now that I hear your ending to the verse bar, it sounds much more like the original. Otherwise also fantastic!

    Hello, i really enojyed the sound, the visuals and the lesson, so danke schön! Also i always thought that in the verse he only plays second fret and makes his pull off thing on it too, I also seen it getinn played like this so many times but not by Adam tho, not sure if theres footage where u can see what hes playin ecactly.

    • @MaxNiessl
      @MaxNiessl  4 года назад

      Gern geschehen! Yep, I honestly don't know. I can't make it out from live footage we got. I definitely hear an ascent when the pull-through comes, but it could just be the little bend. I've always played it like this, but you could be right. Gotta put it in the description :)
