It does not depend on the context, if you say "Da piccolo" it means "when I was a child". It could be "when I'll be a child"+andrò, it's grammatically correct but you have to be very very very young to say that :D an embryo. "sono andato" could be correct only wihtout "tutti i giorni", this part suggests a long duration of the action so the only correct answer is "andavo"

Of course is super common to use it refering to your young age or when you where not fully grown. This fact doesn't change the meaning of it, that is not directly correlated to the age. Also yea, you also admitted that it's grammatically correct. Sono andato is also usable, and is false that a fixed ammount of time determines what kind of past to use. The flowing of time is subjective, so it's long for you maybe but not for me xD . The rule is : When you refer to a precise and determinated ammount of time you use "Sono andato" , when the moment you did the action is not precise or well known .. and it also tend to infinity, you will use "Andrò".

You can use the past or any verb you like .. of course each of them has a precise meaning, and you have to use them precisely to express your concept.
