I am new to the Catholic faith. For years, I denounced Marian doctrine, for this is what I was taught. The church of my childhood would only send missionaries to Catholic countries, for we "knew" they were all going to hell . Married to a wonderful Catholic man for over 40 years, finally in 2020, I found the evidence for Catholicism so overwhelming that I knew I would be sinning if I did not join. Unfortunately, I still need more good catechesis. The scriptural basis for Catholicism over Protestism is overwhelming... and as a good protestant i read and knew my Bible. But there were these MANY Catholic verses that were either ignored(John 6), explained away(Matt 16:18) , or outright disbelieved(1 Peter 3:21). Thank you so much for helping me toward the fullness of truth.

As a Protestant, I was taught that original sin was passed through Adam which I guess was supposed to explain how Jesus didn't inherit original sin. But now it occurs to me that in order for Jesus not to have inherted original sin and be the new Adam, Mary herself couldn't have inherted original sin or she would have passed it along as well. I am wondering if any of the Church Fathers specifically addressed this?

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
*But* made himself of no reputation, *and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men*
And being found in *fashion as a man* he humbled himself, and became *obedient unto death* even the death of the cross.
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
      That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
      {Philippians 2:5-10}
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, *that is passed into the heavens* Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; *but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin*

Obviously they did not read the Church Fathers and have been influenced by modern so-called Bible scholars who seem to control all the RC institutions. Once much desired joining myself to Rome, however, it was, you guessed it, the Marian Devotion thing, which persuaded me otherwise. I have other like minded friends who feel the same.
Mary disappears from the New Testament in Acts...and doesn't pop up again, until the mid, 2nd century, in the Gnostic text, The Protevangelion of James.
The term Gnostic is not a term of approbation, alas.

@horationelson57 As I responded to your comment on the video, you and your friends are missing out and have done yourselves a BIG discredit. But that's ok as you guys are excersizing your free will.
Again, Marian dogmas were established in the church by Episcal COUNCILS.
Bibically as per how the apostolic church in Acts 15 resolved NEW issues of faith, vis a vi circumcision and works of the Mosaic law.
In the same manner, the apostolic church designated teachings through councils of ordained men as per 2 Tim 2:2 where we see Paul prescribing instructions for 4 GENERATIONS of succession!
These men were given the same authority from the apostles to change all in heavan and earth.
This is what you read, see in the scriptures, hear from the apostolic churches, yet deny as others have convinced you.

Both quotes you used for St. Hippolytus, are Pseudos. The first one for sure is a Pseudo, the second on which is quoted in Jimmy Akins book “The Fathers Know Best” I recently learned is a pseudo. I am still researching that one though so just keep an eye out for that one.
The 4 Homilies on the Annunciation by St. Gregory Thamaturgus are Pseudos and were not written by him. However the other homily “Homily Concerning the Holy Mother of God, Ever Virgin” is authentic.

Mary features strongly in Islamic texts. This adds weight to the argument for the influence of Christianity on early Islam.

@@joebombero1 I was brought up in the Methodist tradition, I'm a happy-clappy hippie if anything, with an essentialist morality of 'be nice' a la parable of the good samaritan. I distinctly remember going into Church of England services and being very confused by the recitation of the Nicene Creed. What on earth is that all about ?!
I've had many chats with Muslims, and their anti-trinitarian points of view are not a million miles away from my sense of discussions of the Trinity. Which is why on earth are people spending time so much in their heads rather than getting on with helping one another. Devout Muslims are equally stuck in their heads though with the notion that 'God is one'. But Mary has her own chapter in the Koran, chapter 19 Sura Maryam. And there are lots of indications Islam, at least in part, picked up many ideas from Arianism.

    • @joebombero1
      @joebombero1 День назад

@@petergrimshaw492 I really enjoy lengthy discussions with Muslims. It is clear from the Koran that the early Muslims were very involved in the debates at the time, whether Jesus was God or simply a prophet, whether God had three persons or one, where to Kosher foods come in, what purpose is the church and priests, what purpose does fasting have and pilgrimages. Islam takes a stand on all these issues and I think it reveals a great deal about the early Church. The idea of not wearing shoes in the mosque, women being robed, women and men separated during religious services - all this comes directly out of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, where Mohammed and his followers found refuge in Ethiopia for a time.
Really fascinating stuff. My grandfather was an old-school Methodist minister, back when they had tent revivals and baptisms in the river.

It's important to note that there were (and still are) a lot of heresies floating around. This goddess worship was just one of them. Rome, it should be pointed out, absorbs other religions through religious synchronism, which is the process whereby an existing god or goddess is blended with the deity of another culture in order to "convert" the culture to the Roman religion.
Rome isn't the only one to do this. Hinduism wound up with hundreds of gods and goddesses using synchronism. If you count up all the "saints", Catholicism has an equal number of deities in her pantheon.

The Lumen Gentium identifying Mary as "temple of the Holy Spirit" is more accurate than the often heard "spouse of the Holy Spirit" since the Holy Spirit didn't impregnate Mary; it/she conceived Jesus through Mary's body. It is telling that the female of highest honor and rank, even above seraphim, in this patriarchal religion is one who must pray for you and can't deliver anything herself. And of course they keep the Trinity all-male even though the Holy Spirit is likely female, depicted by a dove, the ancient symbol of the goddess and is described as a helper, teacher, consoler, comforter, advocate, much like a mother.

The church I attend studies the scripture through the lens of typology. I have over 60 books on typology through the Bible. Types have to harmonize with the Bible and not as something that stands on its own. For example, there are more parallels between Christ and his bride with Adam and Eve than there are with Christ and Mary. For example, the rib was in Adam before she was taken from his body and formed into the bride and married back to him and they would rule over the Earth on the seventh day. The church is said to be in Christ before the foundation of the world we are taken from his body, we are married to Christ and we will reign over the Earth in the seventh day or millennium. There’s a direct parallel between the two. But just saying that Mary is the new eve with no substantiation other than the church just said so it is not typology. It’s a fabrication.

None of the churches described in the New Testament seemed to have any special devotion to Mary. I think it's (at least) misleading to say point blank that "It is the UNIVERSAL practice that ancient Christian churches that can trace their origins back to the very beginnings to the Twelve Apostles to practice some sort of devotion to Mary."
Where do we find any evidence that that is a true statement in the New Testament? Corinth was a big church, so was Jerusalem. Ephesus had several churches. Paul wrote to all these churches and doesn't mention a "universal devotion to Mary" - not even once.
The Apostle John, who had custody of Mary from Calvary forward says NOTHING in any of his epistles about a special devotion to Mary.
James and Jude (the brothers of Jesus) are completely silent about this veritable GODDESS who raised them.
Does that strike you in the least curious, given the Roman theology about Mary?

Here is the honest opinion of Protestants. Firstly this is indeed a powerful presentation though I am very familiar with all that has been covered as I have listened to so many Catholic apologists on the subject; Patrick Madrid, Steve Ray, Scott Hahn, Tim Staples, Trent and Jimmy Akan and probably more, but for Protestants these are non negotiable:
Only God is good Mark 10:12 and both Catholics know that though Christ is fully man He is also fully God! For Prots you are either God or creature and will not accept anything in between, that's why Christ role is unique and no Protest will negotiate by adding anything else!
Secondly, for Prots, it doesn't matter whether you are Calvin, Luther or whatever high status, you can err, so their position on Mariology has no influence whatsoever if it cannot be proven from scripture! The key question is did those eye witnesses of the Lord preach the stuff. It doesn't matter how early the practice.
Thirdly Luke 17:10 John 3:29,30 is at the centre of every Protestant we will only glory in God and no other being, because all the good in us proceeds from Him and it is a privilege that he can choose to use in whatever way. Paul even gloried in His weaknesses so that only the Grace of God would shine through him.
Fourthly, the ark itself represented God's presence, and not the contents within it, so we don't agree with Mary being the ark.
Fifthly, the Protestant doesn't entertain speculative theories like the vow of Virginity which is rather obscure grasped from the wild to fulfill someone's fancy wishes and lacks historical support
Sixthly, a Prot will not compromise on what scripture is saying, if the Bible says the Lord had brothers, that is what it is. If Matthew 1:25, says,"he didn't know her till," the Prot stays with the most natural interpretation.
Seventhly, Prots find it laughable that disciples would have a glaring omission of something so fundamental like this in the gospel. This is omitted because it is not part of the gospel or it irrelevant. You are not required to meet some Mariology requirements before you can be saved.
    Eighthly, it sounds very idolatrous.
Ninthly, the Woman who appears in Revelation 12, is still pregnant, so if that is the basis for her assumption, then she is still pregnant in heaven.
Tenthly, if there was going to be the most explicit teacher on Marian dogmas, then John was going to be the champion. He was with her since the time she was given to him on the cross. He lived long enough to reflect thoroughly, but not even his disciples Polycarp and the like taught theae things!

Yep, the protestant position is just rebellion and unwillingness to submit to Christ and the scriptures He gave us.
Even though you proport to be SOLA SCRIPTURA, or some associated nonsense like that.
Fact is, that the Catholic Gospel is way better than your man made one.
For us God makes us His sons to be His image, he doesn't just cover us like the watered down Gospel Prots have.
For us, Jesus wants us to be in His family and will make us like Mary.
Although she is more perfect than the angels.
She is not devine. But she is alive in Christ.
      She is His mother.
The fact is, is that it doesn't matter what verses you see, you have assigned yourself to a belief system.
      And that's OK.
You have sone truth in it if you proclaim Christ as Lord and want God.
Protestantism is satanic as it attacks Christ's body, His church.
But Christ can bring good from Satan. Many possessed people go on to be VERY holy after being delivered from their possesors.

Mary disappears from the New Testament in Acts...and doesn't pop up again, until the mid, 2nd century, in the Gnostic text, The Protevangelion of James.

@horationelson57 The protoevangelium emphasizes Christ's human nature, contradicting the core Christological doctrine of gnosticism/docetism, so I am curious what makes you deem it to be a gnostic text. Also, there are only a handful of documents available to us in general between the conclusion of the Gospel of John and the mid second century due to persecution, and the emphasis in these writings was generally on defending Orthodoxy from heretics or affirming the importance of the legitimate hierarchy rather than in reaffirming unchallenged doctrines. In the later fourth of this video, there are approximately 45 quotes of saints from the 2nd to 4th century who demonstrate a great, and appropriate, appreciation for Mary in the spiritual journey of the Christian.
Mary is mentioned fourth most often in the New Testament after only Jesus, Peter, and Paul. Her role in the New Covenent is not insignificant because it is primarily in the Gospels and Acts. However, she is also referenced in Galatians as well as at the very least hinted at in association to the Ark in Heaven in Reveletation 11 and 12.

      What more do you want?
Even our Lord said "you evil generation, you ask for miracles...."
Christ told his apostles to go out and make disciples of the nations, Matt 28:19.

The reading of the Sub tuum præsidium, displayed and read in this video is a faithful rendition of this prayer, which has been polluted by Catholic interpretations over time. This is the Latin translation:
    Sub tuam
    misericordiam
    confugimus,
    Dei Genitrix ! nostras
    deprecationes ne des-
    picias in necessitatibus
    sed a perditione
    salva nos
    sola pura,
    sola benedicta.
Notice the last two lines, "Sola pura, sola benedicta". These are interpreted as "only pure" and "only blessed". Sola, meaning "only" (as in the epithets "sola scriptura" (i.e. scripture only) and "sola fide" (i.e. faith only). "Sola" is where we get our word "sole".
Later Catholic redactors have added the word "virgin" to that prayer in order to throw off the criticism that this is NOT a prayer to Mary, the mother of Jesus, but to some other "mother of a god (such as Isis). The word "virgin" (Latin, "virgo") does NOT appear in the original.
The fragment that contains this prayer was found in Egypt. The text was written in Greek, which places it sometime after the Alexandrian conquest of Egypt in 332 B.C. Isis was the mother of the god Horus in the Egyptian pantheon and indeed, Isis was recognized as the "mother of all gods" and "the queen of heaven".
Conclusion: This fragment was NOT a prayer to Mary, the mother of Jesus, but to Isis, the mother of god.

Those scrolls in the first half of the Bible were completely believed by Jews for over 1000 years. The new ones were letters written by the apostles. All your church did was put them between two covers. I’m sorry God’s word is God’s word and he doesn’t need a church to put it together. Tradition does it automatically mean truth. The OT was available to explain Christ birth and death. Phillip used the book of Isaiah for salvation. The Mary doctrine was way later around 275-400AD.
