Quick tip on the construction calculator if you divide the overall length by the number of pickets hit ++ then every time you hit = it'll give you the next Pickett or tread. The calculator will automatically add or subtract to make equal distance
I bought one 20 years ago. The calculator works for novices but it requires you to learn all the functions. Physical properties don’t change. Get a chain or pvc and some spray paint to show you your arch, dip, bendy part and then transfer it to a template. I’ll race you on a parabolic ellipse. Stoner brakes (safety meetings) are provided 😂

Two things I think every builder/handyman/homeowner/human should learn to use is a calculator, and the majority of its functions, most things an engineer would use and a multimeter. Both seem scarier than they are but once you learn to use them it's like magic.

You need to do a video on your new truck and when you go to switch over all your equipment from your current truck to your new badass truck do a video on it we would all love to see it and see where you're putting everything on the new truck and stuff like that
I had to custom fabricate a spiral staircase, the handrail stock i had to bend and curve to follow the pitch and curve of the staircase while keeping its profile horizontal. Holy crap that was immensely painful in the posterior. I had to get three extra guys to help me physically and visually because there was no way to heat large enough sections to make smooth bends. It had to be done cold. So..... my congratulations on your handrails turning out so nicely. I know of the pain it was.
A good alternative or companion to the DA sander is a backing pad for your grinder. You can use the same 5" DA pads on a regular 4.5 angle grinder. I have a United Abrasives-SAIT 95255 that I picked up for about $7 (they go for a lot more now)
They have come out fantastic bet your well pleased i can only images how hard it was doing those curves fantastic job. Love that picker spacing tool to I will be looking on eBay for 1 of those tonight so handy 👍👍
i once hand formed a single side 2" pipe railing to a 2 story spindle staircase, glad i had my master to help me, i would think the square tube makes it easier to control the curves and angles along in the different orientations, working 3 dimensional on a round tube was a nightmare! never done anything like that since! Nice job you made with those 2, making a handformed pair is a whole other level of challenge.

I would love to have seen the rosebud torch heating this and you playing plumber with a pipe wrench bending it. Been there done that. I now have a little hydraulic bender. I need to get some square shoes for the bender to use box tubing. I have only done round so far… I am sure you are always the toughest critic of your own work.
Great job. They look amazing. The imperfections show that they were handmade by a craftsman that completed the task and honed their skills along the way. Your customer will be proud to have hand made railings. I just installed a man gate at a customer's home. I fabricated it from 1.5inch .125 wall tube. Nothing fancy. What my customer wanted and it's straight and square.

Thanks for the 3 way level tip. I’ve made a few railings but nothing curved, although I think it would be easier curving the handrails in the tubing roller. Good advice on tapping out.

I made a set learned the hard way even rolling it with a tubing roller I even had it in Auto Cad , had multiple engineers still had to use a torch to bend the square tube back from the twist … one guy told me to use round because you can’t see twist like square … that’s only one factor great job these are incredibly difficult we even mocked the entire stair case up in the shop ! A total PIA lol I fee your pain
Ther are metal rolling companies in most towns using a pyramid roller and they could form all 4 pieces for about less than 100 bucks a piece. Just look around for a company that forms material for spiral staircases. In my town we have a great company that is really good and affordable if it ever comes up again
Great work empire makes a post level at home depot around 6 dollars I bought one from harbor freight just to get the magnetic strips and some super glue to fit them to empire level so I don't need to tie the string you did very good though looks awesome

As a pool guy I've seen a lot of fence and railing so I can say thats a mighty fine job any day of the week ya did there. Most people just booger up something cash a check and disappear. Giving a darn is a rarity nowadays.

Been doing ornamental welding for better then 10 years, and I've never seen that picket tool. Gonna have to check that thing out, especially for the curved railings, might speed things up a bit!
It's called the picket master pro, Salt city steel make them. Invaluable time saver. I had to pay a premium getting it over in here in Australia... But its worth it!

You are absolutely right when you say "hand formed".A lot of people expect robotic, automated, perfect formed railings or whatever and don't appreciate the challenges to achieve what they want. I have a job on the books for next week. It's to make balustrade that matches that of a nearby medieval castle. Its being designed and fitted by the client but one aspect I have to design because there is no easy wasy to attach one post to the house wall. So, in my crazy mind I thought of a way around the twists, bends, off level cambers and such like, and that was to build a "ball joint" return from the post to the wall. This ball joint will get around all the weird angles of the property and allow the customer to fix the post vertical and make it strong. To that end, my next job is to build that ball joint and post. It's not something you buy off the shelf so I have had to design it and now I have to build it. Top regards, Jon.
As a teenager almost out of high school wanting to pursue a career in welding specifically a mobile welder would I use these tools often. If so should you invest in the more expensive tools or does the bare minimum work.
I started and still use the bare minimum, I literally just picked up a welder generator last week, most jobs I’ve gotten require just basic tools, at the same time tho this is my experience at least.
Beautifully done, looks fantastic. A conscientious welder is always their hardest critic. Really love the work.

I use a spreader clamp in conjunction with a normal adjustable clamp to keep railings in square.
