  • An imminent reunion with her old flame Hamlet already has Ophelia on edge, but the fact that her father and the king have orchestrated a means to observe their interactions has brought things to a razors edge. Ophelia must walk the tightrope of her own feelings, as well as the wishes of the court. Unbeknownst to her, Hamlet has his own agendas.
An extract from Act 3, Scene 1 of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'.

Having the camera on Ophelia’s laptop working during this exchange is a nice touch. Hamlet sees it and asks, “Where is thy father?” implying that Polonius is at the other end. The modern version of Polonius hiding behind the arras in the original play.

@@NiallMor was the thinking behind it exactly!

One of my students just used this for a presentation and it was the best interpretation of any scene from any production anyone used this year. And that includes a lot of Hollywood productions! Great work.

I'm trying to determine what Hamlet mouths at 1:54, as if he's leading Ophelia to speak something specific... and why that would be the case (or if he's repeating her words?)

In that moment Hamlet mouths ‘What’s going on?’ - my thinking behind it was to show that Hamlet is aware from very early on that somethings up, but he can’t quite work out what it is. When it becomes clear that Ophelia won’t tell him, he starts to search and investigate - and once he discovers the truth, and Ophelia lies to him about it, that’s when his hurt at the betrayal begin to really rise to the surface.
