Fort Good Hope is strategically sited on a promontory near a cove, looking out on a tranquil beach lined with coconut palms in the town of Senya Beraku in the Central Region. The Fort was erected in 1715 by the Dutch, who were looking to tap into the gold, ivory and slave trade in the hinterland kingdom of Akyem.
Fort Good Hope was initially a small triangular fort, shielded by three bastions and a curtain wall. An apartment building is shielded by the south curtain wall. Inter-ethnic wars between the Asante, Akyem and Akwamu ethnic groups, among others, led to such huge increases in prisoners-of-war slaves, that in 1715 the fort was expanded to include large male and female slave prisons. In an official report of 1804, Fort Good Hope was aptly described as “one of the finest and most spacious forts on the coast” .
This was the last fort built in the Gold Coast. Believed to have the potential to bring grand proceeds from gold trade, the fort was christened 'De Goede Hoop', meaning ‘Good Hope’. Ironically, the expected boom never occurred. The British gained possession of the fort during the 1868 exchange of forts.
Fort Good Hope presently serves as a rest house.
Huh, I never knew of this castle ! Always sad when I hear about slavery. Any forms of slavery must never happen again. Thanks so much, brother Nii
Youre welcome
Its unfortunate but slavery is still going on. Now we are experiencing mental slavery
Oooh waaawoo I never knew about this one well done bro
Thank you sis
Ghana was so rich with natural resources so all the nations were after Ghana. Due to our natural resources. Hmmmmm
Thanks Nii Ayii for the education coz i've only heard about cape castle.
Slavery was real evil and a stain on humanity.
Welcome and thanks for watching
Hope you interview historians to all the castles in Ghana and put them into one playlist for others to view.
Well noted
We Africans are strong indeed. This history is sad. Thanks for uploading, very informative.
Welcome. Thank you for watching
Well, the Africans that enslaved other Africans and sold them to Arabs, Turks, and Europeans were strong. The people they enslaved were not. That's how the latter became enslaved.
Slavery is the strong coercing the weak to work for them. The new movie, ”Woman King”, doesn't celebrate the strength of all Africans but instead, just the strength of the slave kingdom of Dahomey.
So sad. I got goose bumps as watching this. God bless our ancestors. Thanks Nii.
Youre welcome
This is completely new information.I grew up in Winneba.l know Gomoa Fetteh and Senya Beraku , but don't know about this fort.l will share with the teachers l know from those towns.Good job, sir.
I have visited Fort Patience in Apam, Fort---- in Keta,Fort St.Jago,Elmina Castle,Cape Castle. Our elementary school in Winneba was close to a fort. This video is a revelation.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you very much. I'm glad you love it and also to share with the teachers
I'm African from America it makes me sad. 😢
God continue to bless you Nii Ayi. Thank you
Amen and thanks for watching
Very sad. Thank you for this. Very well done.
Welcome and thank you for watching
12:42 The view of the Alantic Ocean is beautiful.
Thank you
Nii, this was one of the first videos that I discovered you, bro. I commented previously on this Vlog. But when RUclips took my page down, they erased all my previous posts to everyone's video. Watching this video makes my blood boil. No country has ever apologized to African Americans for their role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Nii, you and I could be actual cousins, but because of evidoers, my ancestors were stolen from mama Africa and brought here to America to live a life of hardship and tragedy. Nii, THANK YOU for having the courage to document this stain on humanity.
Am even emotional right now. Its so true that we could be related but this act separated us from our brothers and sister in the other side . May this never happens to us again
Nii thanks, very educative vlog.
First to watch and comment. This is a very sad story
Amazing Ni and AJ, I have learnt so much from your channel.
Glad you like them!
Very interesting. I had no idea there was more than two castles.
Actually there are a lot in Ghana
There are many throughout the coastlines of Africa.
@@this_is_africa yes anf i think almost like 40
There are about 15 in Ghana but most are in ruins
During the slave capturing, a village will be raided and all the strong men and women will be captured leaving only the old people and children to start over. This process is repeated for over 400 years. Most of the people that could have help in the development of their home either ended up at the bottom of the sea or in a foreign land as SLAVES. The traumatised children are left at home has no one to teach them the ways of life and how to protect themselves. This is one of the reasons after is centuries behind in terms of development.
Nii your content is on another level
Watching from Sydney Australia
THANK YOU SO MUCH
That's a historical treasure sitting right there. Ministry of tourism and Ghana tourist board should relocate the residents and take over ASAP!
hmmm
Thank you
Dr Walter Rodney and Frantz Fanon are worth a re- reading in these times
Thank. you
@@niiayi well done on your work. Please be assured not all Europeans share in their hearts or minds the evilness Africans have suffered in colonialism and modern day overhang such as scenes in USA and elsewhere.I was 6 weeks before publication of my phd thesis which interrogated issues you raise and the Dublin university I was in went from ststing my work was outstanding to saying they wanted me to exit .....I am looking for a group of African writers who I csn work with. The past must be properly recorded to build a roadmap for the future of Africa. Whites when they are dark ofheart pick on each other as well as onother races and the descendants of slave traders are among many westernleaders today. The role of the christian churchin Africa must be properly recorded too costhey did not cometo vivilis (people in Africa were among earliest civilisations)...How ironic that many slave castles along the African coast are named after saints.
apologies for typo.I meant to say the churches did not come to civilise Africans...Africans were much more civilised....sadly Africans sold their own people away in many cases for monetarygain.Very sad.But if whites did not interfere with Africa none of this would have happened andstillbe happening. The treatmentofthe African diaspora is a worry evenin Ireland.
@@maryclairfitzpatrick8135 The Irish people are a face of fighters, one of the ultimate anti-colonialist and anti-imperialist nations. Loved by all friends of freedom.
@@maryclairfitzpatrick8135 Let's hook up. Half of the stories on slavery has never been told. Ghana has much to share with the outside world, dwelling on hard core evidence.
Thanks for sharing. I named a few forts in my upcoming video however I wasn't aware of this one.
Is this within the Fante part of Ghana or?
yes
@@niiayi Good to know. Thanks for your reply.
@@ComingToAfrica You're welcome
Those of us that know are ready to come home! We have suffered enough among our enemies!
You want to go back to the people that enslaved you to begin with?
You want to leave a country that fought its bloodiest war to free your ancestors and go back to the country that enslaved your ancestors.
Think harder.
Thx you my brother ...HAÏTI is here now ZOE life 1803
Thank you
Absolute discrace. Never forget
Can you remove the furniture from the room? That place he claims you cannot enter might just be what tourists will like to see most. They have to find a way to let tourists see it
Exactly my thoughts 💭 no 👎 body must be allowed to live there n the hole 🕳 of no return must be open n used for turismo
They really pit us against each other.I remember i was in London and a Nigerian man ask me where i was from and i said guyana and he said oh! You son of a slave.
This is so sad 😢😢😢
Actually, it looks like the Dutch built the fort in 1704 according to Wiki.
@Pxer Interesting you said for one Wiki is not a credible source" however you gave no rebuttal to counter the claim on Wiki. Two, "Just leave the tour guide alone" in your case the word "Actually" worked as a trigger to think I was going after the tour guide. I know the tour guide, I have interviewed the tour guide before, the tour guide Mr Nii Ayi I'm a fan of his work. My question as to the way you put it. Where within my statement by doing some research equates to bothering the tour guide?
@Pxer Yes, I am aware that some mistakes are made and some people put in the wrong information on purpose with the Wiki site. However, the site is a reputable source for most of its content. I know because I'm a big study and user of the site. The information that I got from Wiki was correct except the year was off by one 1704 when it was actually 1705. 1704 could have been a year to plan the construction but I did not go that deep into it. Where I got the correct year was to cross-reference with a reputable source outside of Wiki. The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) is the legal organisation responsible for the preservation of Ghana's material cultural heritage. A Ghana organisation 🇬🇭. I hope this was a service to you and you can check their website which lists every Fort, in Ghana.
Nii Ayi it’s sad😫
Very sad
Nii ... i am deeply sorry
It's well
It's important to know, that is not just one place were slaving of African people took place.
The guy said people like you!
Vengeance is MINE and it’s coming!
What is the name of this fort and on which region of ghana it is?
Fort Good hope at the central region
@@niiayi thanks
Who built that there
What’s the name of this castle
Fort Good HOPE
Know for a fact ghana has AT LEAST 11 SLAVE CASTLES not just capecoast and Elmina. Our forefathers fought and fought to be free but couldn't. If a white mfker tells you an African sold fellow Africans don't believe these born liars. They lied to them. I pray ghana gets a good government who will revive these ports and castles to make all of it tourist placed folks can visit that alone will be huge income generator. Also I want this history to be though in all our schools plus African American history and what They went through for 500 yrs.
Why can’t Ghana tourist board and government of Ghana document all the forts and castles along the coast maintain them to attract more tourists. For me this my first time seeing this fort through your lens😳😳😳😂
Exactly Bro
www.ghana.travel/places-to-visit/castles-and-forts/
Tell me about it, I was born and raised in this town and Ghanaian history books rarely mention about Fort Good Hope. Senya will rise one day, just watch.
Fact bro they should allow anybody to live there period it’s for history
@@usmcmustang01 ABSOLUTELY, just learnt about it 2 yrs & that's my paternal grandpa's town. I even I've a senya name, smh. I intend to visit next time I'm in Ghana.
Shout out to My great great grandfather Who worked there
😅👏🏾👏🏾
There are so many historical sites and places in the 🌎 that is named world heritage , why can't they name all the forts and castles in Africa as world heritage? Or they are ashamed of what they did to the Africa nations
Portuguese world heritage 💪🇵🇹
Please Nii, it is a dungeon, not a castle. You disrespect us when you call it a castle.
Dungeons are a standard part of a castle just as cellars are a standard part of a chateau. That's like saying a car has to be called a wheel because there is a wheel on it.
Some were castles or fort for defence against other European the Fort has dungeon’s inside
Hmmm Asem o
hhhhmmmmm
The African man is strong 💪
Thank you
Maybe they should ask for forgiveness, never forget and never trust and be a fool again.
Great
So who built the castle, I mean as far as labor. Did the African slaves actually build it ??
The africans in the community
@@niiayi free Africans or slaves ??
Unbelievable!!!
Forte is a portuguese word that means stronghold. The architecture of that forte(castle) is full of portuguese architecture, beatifull 😍. that guide is full of... the cannons were for defensive purposes only. To intimidate the slaves they used a chicote(indiana jones used one). Nice to see so many portuguese marks all around the globe. Portuguese power 💪🇵🇹
Thanks for watching
Not castles, they are dungeons.
Castles or strongholds
that slave castle is poorly maintained. it shows a level of disrespect the Ghanian government has for the idea
Your tour guide is misguiding everyone please next time do your research first. Thank you
Well noted. Thank you
Why you talk about forgiving them???????
No way dont forgive and dont come to europe 👍
I know those fool that died out of the malleria are burning in hell fire, but wait so are this the people that brought Christianity to us,eeeei
🤣🤣🤣
Barracoons
Beautiful outside horrible inside.these white peoples had really bad intentions destiny will find them.
Had bad intentions....to this day they still do!!!!
